Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey

1875–1927 Born in the Gold Coast, now Ghana, Aggrey excelled as a student and in 1898 entered university in the US where he graduated 4 years later with 3 degrees, following which he became minister of African Methodists Zion Church in Salisbury, NC. He earned doctorates in theology and osteopathy in 1912 and 1914. In 1920 he joined a research expedition to Africa to study educational needs, and over two years he gathered and analysed data to that end in what are now 10 African countries. In 1924 he was appointed first Vice-Principal of Achimota College in Accra. In 2004, the City of Salisbury and the State of North Carolina erected a historical marker to honour the contributions to the city and the state of Dr. Aggrey and his wife, Mrs. Rose Aggrey.
