A traditional Mvskoke (Muscogee) (Creek Indian); he was an ardent opponent of assimilation and allotment as well as an excellent orator. He was a prisoner of war against the United States. His speech is considered among the most eloquent statements regarding treatment of Indian peoples and is often quoted as the source of the phrase "as long as the grass grows" used in regard to the perpetuity of Indian treaties and agreements
