Benjamin Lee Whorf (April 24, 1897 in Winthrop, Massachusetts - July 26, 1941) was an American linguist. Whorf has had considerable influence in the field of sociolinguistics for his theory of linguistic relativity, which he developed with Edward Sapir. Nowadays, this theory is often misrepresented as being synonymous with the "Sapir-Whorf hypothesis", which was in fact a posthumous appellation, referring to a number of Whorf's ideas on top of linguistic relativity, as well as a certain other notions which were not specifically Whorf's to begin with
