DS Ellie Miller:
You don't like fish and chips? What kind of Scot are you?

Dr. Martin Baxter:
You're the last person I expected a phone call from.

DI Alec Hardy:
You're the first friendly face I've seen in months.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
Well, If I'm the friendly face, god knows what the rest of them are like.

DI Alec Hardy:
Oh... you've no idea. It is another world.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
It's a bit cloak and dagger Alec, meeting out here? What's wrong with the office?

DI Alec Hardy:
Small town, everyone's eyes on ya. Don't like it.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
I erm... went through all the results you sent me.

DI Alec Hardy:
So?

Dr. Martin Baxter:
It's not good Alec.

DI Alec Hardy:
[Hardy sighs] No...

Dr. Martin Baxter:
You've got to change all of this. No stress, no pressure, nothing that will cause unnecessary exertion.

DI Alec Hardy:
I can't.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
You have to. If you don't... you'll end up dead!

DI Alec Hardy:
[He growls distastefully] Ahh. You bloody doctors! Always do as I say you'll end up dead.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
I'm serious! Look... I'll make sure all the paperwork gets filled in, you can be invalided out.

DI Alec Hardy:
Not till I'm done here.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
You like it that much?

DI Alec Hardy:
No I hate it! I hate the air. I hate the sand. I hate the stupid people. I hate the way they work. I hate their bloody smiley bloody faces. I hate the never ending sky!

Dr. Martin Baxter:
Well, why be here at all?

DI Alec Hardy:
[long pause] It's penance.

Dr. Martin Baxter:
What? No, really?

DI Alec Hardy:
Really.

DI Alec Hardy:
[shouts from his office] Miller? [Leaving his office he walks over to Miller who remains seated at her desk] Reconstruction, Thursday night, one week on? Your boy Tom should do it.

DS Ellie Miller:
What? No I don't want him to.

DI Alec Hardy:
[Hardy interrupts] No. He's the best choice.

DS Ellie Miller:
Did you not hear what I just said? He's just lost his best friend. That could traumatize him for life.

DI Alec Hardy:
Well, maybe he should be allowed to decide.

DS Ellie Miller:
No... I'm his mum... I decide!

DI Alec Hardy:
Oh, so your commitment to this investigation stops outside these doors?

DS Ellie Miller:
With respect sir, move away from me now, or I will piss in a cup and throw it at you!

DI Alec Hardy:
[ignores comment] Talk to... [struggles to remember a name] [Miller looks at Hardy with disgust]

DI Alec Hardy:
What's your husbands name? Joe? Talk to him about it, and Tom.

DS Ellie Miller:
[Miller digresses] You're invited to dinner.

DI Alec Hardy:
[Hardy looks confused] What?

DS Ellie Miller:
Pick a night

DI Alec Hardy:
In your house, why?

DS Ellie Miller:
Do you know many people here?

DI Alec Hardy:
No.

DS Ellie Miller:
Are you living off hotel food?

DI Alec Hardy:
It's not a good idea.

DS Ellie Miller:
Please don't be an arsehole about it. Believe me, I don't really wanna do it either, but it's what people do.

DI Alec Hardy:
Is it?

DS Ellie Miller:
[Raises her voice] Yes! They have their bosses round. We don't have to talk about work.

DI Alec Hardy:
What do we talk about?

DS Ellie Miller:
I don't know, just say yes...

DI Alec Hardy:
[Hardy mumbles] Yeah.

DS Ellie Miller:
Thank you, bloody hell! [Hardy walks away and Millers attention returns to her computer as she insults him under her breath] Knob!

Maggie Radcliffe:
Better to have you inside the tent pissing out than outside than the tent pissing in, I suppose.

Jack Marshall:
We're the same, Mark. No parent should outlive their child.

Beth Latimer:
Should I pay for it? I'm not going to pay for it.

Mark Latimer:
This house, this town, this job of mine: It's all I'm ever going to be, innit? I know every second of it, and every second of it to come.

Sharon Bishop:
You colluded that night to frame the defendant, your husband, to get him out of the way, because you were having an affair with DI Hardy, didn't you?

Ellie Miller:
This is how you think you're gonna win? By twisting the truth and distorting all our lives?

Sharon Bishop:
And isn't it the case that this investigation missed key opportunities and failed to examine leads because it was compromised by your personal liaisons with DI Hardy and together you put an innocent man in the dock? [looking toward the accused]

Ellie Miller:
No, totally untrue. You've got no evidence for this. I am not the guilty one here. I am not!

Sharon Bishop:
Thank you, PC Miller.

[first lines]

Alec Hardy:
[talking on the phone] Yeah, still holding for Mr Davies. No, no, I don't want to reschedule. I want to erm... talk to him about an increase in my symptoms.

Alec Hardy:
[listening to the person on the other end of the line] What, is he some higher mortal who doesn't phone people?

Alec Hardy:
[listening to the person on the other end of the line] My GP? Seriously? For...

Alec Hardy:
[ends the conversation, sees Olly coming in] Oh, God, what do you want?

Sharon Bishop:
Did you recognize the body?

Susan Wright:
Yeah, I did.

Sharon Bishop:
And can you name that man for the court?

Susan Wright:
Nigel Carter. He's my son... and he's sitting over there.

[last lines]

Ellie Miller:
[while driving] So, Lisa's phone in Portsmouth. What do you do in Portsmouth apart from being in the navy or looking at ships?

Alec Hardy:
Go on, dazzle me.

Ellie Miller:
You get a ferry to France. Portsmouth to Cherbourg.

Alec Hardy:
So?

Ellie Miller:
So, who else was in France?

Alec Hardy:
Lee Ashworth.

Ellie Miller:
Exactly. [arriving at the destination] OK, this is the place.

Alec Hardy:
What is it they do?

Ellie Miller:
Services to the agricultural industries. I couldn't find anything more specific than that.

Alec Hardy:
It doesn't seem like a place Lee Ashworth would be connected to.

Ellie Miller:
So, what is he not telling us? [approaching the premises] It looks pretty closed.

Alec Hardy:
It must have gone out of business. [pauses and then moves away] Let's look round the back. [entering the premises] Are you going to talk to Tom before he gets in the box?

Ellie Miller:
I don't want to talk about it. [makes a few steps inside] What's that smell? [a few seconds later] It's blood. [sees a strange container] What is that? [after looking around more] Oh, look, here you go. [after opening it] Oh, God. It's a furnace.

Alec Hardy:
Agricultural services - they burned dead animals here. You still think Lisa Newbery is alive?

Jocelyn Knight:
And yet, the one person we haven't heard from is the defendant himself. It's a short walk from the dock to the witness box. I've counted it to be thirteen steps. You may think that if you are falsely accused of a child's murder, you'd make that short walk. You may even think you'd run there to reassure the jury of your innocence. But when given the opportunity to give his own account and explanation of evidence against him, when given the opportunity to protest his innocence, to shout it from the rooftops, he chooses to stay silent. Instead he allows his lawyers to speculate, to throw red herrings around to try to distract you from the truth. You may conclude that the reasons for all these distortions and the reason the defendant has not gotten into that witness box is because he knows, he knows, he can't defend himself. He's preferred to hide behind the glass, to hide behind the fabricated stories his lawyers are fighting to convince you of.
