Adam:
Can you tell me where this is, please?

local:
[speaking in Thai, points down the way]

Adam:
Now uh, it's not this way? [pointing the opposite direction]

local:
[shaking head no insisting]

Adam:
[plaintively] Can anyone hear speak English?

Adam:
[writing in diary] Amazing Thailand, 6,000 miles. Another continent, another culture, another planet. Great feeling to be leaving England behind. Don't know what to expect, but hoping for something new.

Adam:
Thailand was Kate's idea to develop our relationship. But driving from the airport, Bangkok didn't quite seem what we'd expected. Somehow I'd imagined something more or less concrete. Less western.

bar owner:
