Yoshiaki Kawajiri's reputation as a screenwriter-director rests on his dark, violent adventures, especially Wicked City (1987). The 1988 OVA Demon City Shinjuku borrows heavily from Wicked City and Star Wars. Ten years after his father was killed in a duel with the evil Rebi, Kendo champion Kyoya is told by his father's teacher that he must learn to harness the web of spiritual energy that flows among living things. This mastery, plus the assistance of lovely Sayaka, enables Kyoya to destroy Rebi and prevent him from releasing demons from hell onto Tokyo. A Wind Called Amnesia takes place after human civilization has been devastated by a wind that erased everyone's memories--even the basics of language and self-care. Accompanied by the mysterious Sophia, Wateru, whose mind was laboriously restored by a survivor at a government research facility, wanders through America in a jeep, trying to reawaken people's minds. In the four-part OVA Birdy the Mighty (1996), nerdy student Tsutomu is accidentally killed by the alien humanoid Birdy; she takes over his body to restore him to life. Birdy has to defeat a plot to turn humans into mutant warriors; Tsutomu wants to be a normal teenager. Their endless squabbles cause problems beyond anything in All of Me. Kawajiri uses color with exceptional skill, especially in the monochromatic duel at the opening of Demon City. But all three stories suffer from stilted English dubs.
