Fate/Zero

Fate/Zero

Fate/Zero (Japanese: ????/??, Hepburn: Feito/Zero) is a Japanese light novel written by Gen Urobuchi, illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi, and is a prequel to all routes in Type-Moon's visual novel, Fate/stay night. Fate/Zero is set ten years before the events of Fate/stay night, and tells the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War, a secret magical tournament held in Fuyuki City, Japan where seven magicians known as Masters summon Servants, reincarnations of legendary souls and heroes from all across time, where they fight in a deadly battle royale where the winner obtains the Holy Grail, a magical legendary chalice capable of granting wishes. The main protagonist, Kiritsugu Emiya, the foster father of Fate/stay night's protagonist, Shir? Emiya, is known as a merciless mage killer who joins the tournament on behalf of his wife's family, the Einzberns. An anime adaptation has been produced by Ufotable, the first season of which aired from October 1 to December 24, 2011 and the second season of which aired from April 7 to June 23, 2012. The music was composed by Yuki Kajiura, who also composed the music for Puella Magi Madoka Magica. A manga adaptation was published by Kadokawa Shoten between 2011 and 2017. Dark Horse Comics licensed the manga and released it in English in North America. Upon its release, Fate/Zero was acclaimed by many reviewers, with praise directed at the animation, themes, characters, soundtrack and story. The series has also been a commercial success, selling over 40,000 BD box-set and won several awards at the Newtype anime awards including "Title of the Year".

Zouken Matou:
I told you to never let me see you again, Kariya.

Kariya Matou:
I heard you adopted the Tohsakas' second daughter.

Zouken Matou:
[chuckles] You have good ears.

Kariya Matou:
Is it *that* important to keep magi in the Matou lineage?

Zouken Matou:
And would you tell me we're wrong to? *You*, of all people? Whose fault do think our present condition is? Kariya, had you agreed to carry on the family name and learn the secrets of the Matou, things wouldn't be this bad.

Kariya Matou:
Stop this nonsense, you vampire. You only want the Grail to make yourself immortal.

Zouken Matou:
[laughs] By next year, sixty years will have elapsed since that time. But the Matou have no pawns to offer for the Fourth Holy Grail War. While you might have, your brother Byakuya lacks the power to control a Servant. But even if we let this round pass, we could still win the next. The Tohsaka girl's womb will produce a powerful magus. She has quite the potential, that one.

Kariya Matou:
So as long as you get the Grail, you don't need Sakura Tohsaka for anything?

Zouken Matou:
What trick are you thinking of?

Kariya Matou:
A trade, Zouken. During the next war, I will retrieve the Grail. And you will release Sakura.

Zouken Matou:
[chuckles] Don't be stupid. You're a failure who hasn't trained a day in his life. And yet you're telling me you'll attain the power to control a Servant in a year?

Kariya Matou:
You have the ability to make that happen with that control over the worms you're so proud of.

Zouken Matou:
Eh?

Kariya Matou:
Implant a crest worm inside me.

Zouken Matou:
Kariya, do you want to die?

Kariya Matou:
The Matous should be the ones to achieve their own goals. I won't let outsiders get involved. I don't expect you'll worry much about me, will you, Father?

Zouken Matou:
[chuckles] If you're trying to keep her out of this, Kariya, you're a little late.

Kariya Matou:
Old man, you mean...

Zouken Matou:
There were terrible cries for the first three days, but by the fourth day, she was silent. Today, she was thrown at dawn in the worm storage to test how well she would last, but, ho ho, she endured it for half a day and is still breathing. What do you know, the Tohsaka material isn't defective. So what will you do? The little girl is already broken, filled by the worms from head to toes. But if you still think you want to save her, well, I won't think about it twice.

Kariya Matou:
No objection. Let's just do it.

Zouken Matou:
Excellent, excellent. Well, we can still train you as much as possible. But know that I will go on with Sakura's training as long as you don't show any results. [laughs] Rather than reinstating a failure who has already betrayed us, the success rate of getting a child from this is far higher. I favor getting the best out of each opportunity one at a time. I am giving up on the Heaven's Feel this time, since I already considered it a lost battle. But, if in one in a million chances, you could get the Grail - I agree. If that happens, naturally I won't have any business with the daughter of Tohsaka. I would be finished with the one thing I am training her for.

Kariya Matou:
You're not double-dealing, are you, Zouken?

Zouken Matou:
Kariya, if you think you need to be five-faced to speak to me, try enduring the crest worms first. Yes, for a week. If you haven't died of insanity by then, I will take it you are indeed serious.

Saber:
To ensure their country's prosperity, a king should make any sacrifice.

Rider:
No. The king does not make any offerings. The nation and the people offer themselves to the king, not the reverse.

Saber:
What? Those are a tyrant's words!

Rider:
Just so. We are heroes *because* we are tyrants. However, Saber, if a king regrets their rule or its conclusion, that king is nothing but a fool.

Saber:
Iskander, your reign ended with your heirs slain, and your empire dissolved into three parts. You have no regrets about that end?

Rider:
None. Not if it came to pass by my judgment and my retainers' sacrifices. Its destruction was inevitable. I shall grieve. And I shall weep. But I shall never regret - let alone *undo* it! Such an act would be a mockery of all who fought with me!

Saber:
Only warriors can find glory in destruction! Of what worth is a king who fails to protect the powerless? A just rule, with just laws - *those* are the true duties of a king!

Rider:
So you, the king, are a slave to what is right?

Saber:
That is acceptable. A king is a martyr to their ideals.

Rider:
That is not how a person should live.

Saber:
If I rule the nation as king, I cannot ask to live as a person. King of Conquerors, you seek the Grail merely for your own benefit. You could never understand - you, who became a ruler only to satisfy your endless greed.

Rider:
A king without greed is even worse than a figurehead! Saber, you said you would martyr yourself for your ideals. In life, you must have been a pure saint. A proud and noble figure, certainly. But who can truly admire the martyr's thorny path? Who dreams of such an ending? A king. The king must be greedier than any other. He must laugh more loudly and rage for longer. He must exemplify the extreme of all things, good and evil. That is why his retainers envy and adore him. And why the flames of aspiration, to be as the king is, can burn within his people. Proud king of chivalry, the righteousness and ideals you bore may indeed have saved your nation once. However, I'm certain you know what became of those who were saved, but left to themselves.

Saber:
What?

Rider:
You saved them, but you never led them. You never showed them what a king should be. You abandoned your men when they lost their way. Then, alone and untroubled, you followed your own petty little ideals. Thus, you are no true king. You are only a little girl, enraptured by a false idol of a king who serves others, but not themselves.
