[as she and Valjean witness a convoy of convicts being taken to the penal colonies] But father... are they... still human?

Jean Valjean:
Sometimes.

Marius Pontmercy:
I saw your brother last night. He's coming to see you later. He's a good kid. [chuckles] We talked politics!

Eponine:
What's so funny? He knows a lot about it.

Enjolras:
[referring to Pop Mabeuf, who has just been shot down] Now, citizens, may each of you fight for this dead old man as he would for his own living father.

Gavroche:
Gosh! Shooting the dead now?

Eponine:
[to Marius, as she is dying] Promise to kiss my forehead when I'm dead. I'll feel it.

Enjolras:
He makes no vain sacrifice who fights for a cause. All here are ready to die so that our brothers may live as free men. Liberty... sweet liberty... come fight with those who defend you.

Enjolras:
Dear friends, we're going to die down to the last man. But our deaths will stop nothing. Our example will serve the cause. Others will finish what we've begun. Long live the republic! Fire when I five the signal. Then I'll blow up the barricade.

Courfayrax:
I love fireworks. Let me set it off. You're the leader. You have to stay here to welcome them.

Enjolras:
If you like.

Enjolras:
[on Jean Valjean] Who is he?

Grantaire:
I don't know. A man who saves others.

Courfayrax:
Aiming at that sergeant whose face you can't see? These young artillery officers are well educated. He has a father and mother. He can't be more than 25. He could be your brother.

Enjolras:
He is.

Courfayrax:
And mine too. Let him live.

Enjolras:
Leave me alone! We have to! [shoots the sergeant]

[Jean Valjean has counted his wages and realized that he does not have the promised amount of money]

L'employ? de Mairie:
Yours is not to count. The state counts for you, and it's never wrong.

Jean Valjean:
So it never ends? After the chains comes the passport.

Champmathieu:
[referring to the police and the court] They don't know their line of business too good. They don't believe nobody. I tell them I'm old Champmathieu, and they call me a liar. The other fellow says he's Jean Valjean, and they call for a doctor. But a fellow knows who he is don't he? They're a bit dense.

Le pr?sident du jury:
[discussing Valjean nearby] No, justice won't be flouted like this. They've issued a warrant to rearrest the man at all costs.

Champmathieu:
They talking about me? Did they change their minds? If they find another fellow to confuse me with, they might arrest me all over again! I'm leaving.

Jean Valjean:
God is just. It is man... who sometimes... is unjust.
