On August 27, 1930, the entire motion picture industry suspended work to pay tribute to the memory of one of its great actors.

Guard:
Good morning, Mr. Thalberg.

Irving Thalberg:
Good morning.

William R. Darrow Jr.:
Who are you? What are you doing here?

Lon Chaney:
I'm from the collection agency. I've come to collect my wife.

Lon Chaney:
The kind of fellows I play, pretty girls don't write to.

Creighton Chaney at 13:
Say, Pop! There's a great new joke going around school. "Don't step on that spider. It might be Lon Chaney."

Hazel Bennett Chaney:
Darling, it's wonderful. But isn't it very painful?

Lon Chaney:

Clarence Locan:
What'd you say?

Creighton Chaney at 13:

Clarence Locan:
A thousand faces! Thalberg's been after me to start a new advertising campaign. "The Man of a Thousand Faces"! How's that?

Clarence Locan:
Make it 1001 faces, Lon. This is one I've never seen before.

Irving Thalberg:
[after hearing Lon describe his interpretation of Quasimodo] That's just what I want the audience to see, Mr. Chaney - the soul of a man that Godmade different. If you can get that on fim, we've got ourselves a picture.

Lon Chaney:
If a guy can be enough things in this buusiness, he can make a living.

Gert:
Now, just listen, don't start spendin' the money. You Still got that face.

Lon Chaney:

George Loane Tucker:
Look, Lon, publicity is part of our business. We're not just a goldfish bowl; we're an aquarium. There's no room in the industry for a mystery man. Why, if we wnt...

Clarence Locan:
[Interrupting] Just a minute, Mr. Tucker - mystery man! I'm a dead head from way back. I haven't paid t see anything in years. , but you know something? I'd buy a ticket to see a mystery man... a change of face - nothing more. I can hear the jingle in the box office. I can see the campaign now - Lon Chaney: Man of Mystery!

Lon Chaney:
And you can stop bothering me. Get out!

Clarence Locan:
[Leaving with his feelings stung] You can make it 1001 faces, Lon. This is one I've never seen before.

Lon Chaney:
We've got to talk about this.

Cleva Creighton Chaney:
Surprise, Lon, for once I don't want to talk anymore.

Cleva Creighton Chaney:
[Believing that Chaney has cost her her singing job] You had me fired! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you!
