Shimmer:
Bounce, our beans turned into bugs. Just like magic.

Bounce:

Spiderus:
Frog, frog, frog! Miss Spider, everybuggy! Save yourselves! No, no, wait. Save me.

Mrs. Frog:
Somebody must have seen Felix. Maybe we should ask that nice spider lady.

Mr. Frog:
[mocking] Maybe we should ask that - - You expect me to ask some eight-legged appetizer where my son is?

Mrs. Frog:
No, I suppose you're not up to it. I'll ask her.

Dragon:
C'mon, Mom. If you adopted us, you can adopt Felix, right?

Kids:
[cheer assent]

Miss Spider:
[whistles] It's not that simple. Felix already has parents, and they miss him very much.

Felix:
No, they don't.

Miss Spider:
[gasps]

Miss Spider:
Okay, everybuggy. It's snugglebug time. Off to bed and up the web.

Miss Spider:
A quiet morning to sleep in sounds very good to me right now.

Bounce:
OK. If you get to bed and up the web, we'll take care of everything in the morning.

Holley:
Really? Oh, this web idea is starting to sound pretty good.

Even the bravest big sister bugs can get scared sometimes, too.

Miss Spider:
Once upon a time, long, long ago, the brave Princess Shimmer was out for a stroll when a nasty thunderstorm suddenly blew in.

Squirt, Petal:

Holley:
Oh, look at the size of those cumulonimbus. That's a sure sign a thunderstorm is on its way and it's not going to blow over soon.

Dragon:

Shimmer:
I just want to be the buggiest party ever! And decorations and lots of flowers and web banners and party hats. Hmm, did I say flowers?

Miss Spider:
I think we're all members of the Funny Patch club today.

Shimmer:
Mmm, boysenberry.

Bounce:

Wow! This is definitely one weird-looking leaf. [the "leaf" rustles, sending Squirt falling to the ground] Whoa!

Bounce:

Sweetie:
Any chocolate?

Squirt:
Well, no. But we've got honey, fresh from the hive!

Sweetie:
I thought honey only came from those plastic bear squeeze bottles.

Squirt:
Huh?

Gus:
Now, right overhead. That's the Bug Dipper.

[the Spider children ooh and ahh]

Gus:
Then, over to your left, Earwig Minor.

Wonder what would make a star fall?

Gus:
Maybe Squirt wished on it so darn much, it fell right out of the sky!

Well, it's not really a star, kids. It's just something that looks like one.

I don't think so, mom.

Miss Spider:
You don't want to make anymore wishes?

Squirt:
It's not that. I want it to be our special wishing star.

Bounce, Shimmer:
Thanks, Squirt.

Dragon:

Ned:
Mmm, a mouthful. I can taste it melting already.

Ted:
Yeah. Do you know the number of cans in the town?

Snowdrop:
I'm clumsier with six legs than I was with eight. And now I've got sprained ankles to prove it.

Holley:
Come on, honey! Shake a leg! Or, you know, all eight of them.

Squirt:
Bounce, where's Mom?

Bounce:
Mom wasn't at the finish line. She promised!

Squirt:
Are moms even allowed to miss stuff like this, Grandma?

Betty Beetle:
Your Mom always tries her best, Squirt. I'm sure there's a good reason she missed you.

Bounce:
[running rapidly towards the Hollow Tree] Faster! Faster! Faster! Faster! Faster! Faster!

[The Spider children all chatter rapidly, trying to get Miss Spider's attention.]

Squirt:
Mom!

Miss Spider:
[holding a sailor's cap] Put this on, Wiggle. It'll be sunny sailing on the puddle today.

Miss Spider:
Just run your best, Bounce. But don't run after me.

Bounce:
But I'm scared. Bugs are watching.

Miss Spider:
And I'll be there watching too. At the finish line. Now I have to go, honey.

[She gives him a kiss, but he moans.]

Miss Spider:
[to herself] I've made a promise to each of my little bugs. But I can't be in eight places at once!

Bounce:
Did you try your best?

Miss Spider:
Yes, I really did.

Bounce:
Me too! I won, I won, I won, I won, I won!

[referring to himself and Pansy] We broke our webs.

Miss Spider:

Mr. Mantis:
One springtime long ago, after the long winter, bugs of all shapes and sizes, including some of my relatives, sailed across the Big Hungry Fish Lake on mayflowers.

Shimmer:
[regarding her hatchday tree] Mom, do you think my beetle Mom will be there?

Miss Spider:
[gasps slightly in surprise] I don't know, Shimmer. Is that why you want to find your tree?

Shimmer:
Well, sometimes I do think about her.

Shimmer: I think our family tree is the prettiest, most colorful one in the whole Sunny Patch Family Forest.

[Spider family cheers assent]

Miss Spider:

Squirt:

Miss Spider:
This sounds silly, but I thought I just saw a flying frog.

Holley:
Maybe it's time somebody had her peepers checked.

Frank:
Whoa! Heavens to bugsy! What's a frog doing at the top of a tree?

Felix:
I'm jumping to the moon, sir.

Bounce:
That's good. I'm sleepy.

Holley:
Hmm. Cricket chirps. And it sounds like they aren't far away.

Spiderus:
I tell you, Holley, I know music and that is not music.

Holley:
It's not my cup of tea, either, Spiderus. But just because we don't like it doesn't mean it isn't music.

Spiderus:
Since those appalling crickets persist in their nighttime noise-making, I shall simply sleep during the day. Problem solved.

Squirt:

Miss Spider:
You too, Pansy.

Squirt:
[sounding very congested] T'anks, mom. What if the sun never comes back?

Miss Spider:
It will, sweetie, don't worry.

Squirt:
I hope it does soon.

Miss Spider:
You'll all feel better with a dose of my hot honey and lemon drop soup. I'll make some as soon as dad, Wiggle and Bounce get back with the lemon juice. [hands tissue to Shimmer, who blows her nose] I hope they get home soon.

Holley:
Sorry, Wiggle. You can't bring a mushroom into the house. No spores indoors.

Bounce:
[in Wiggle's dream] Don't do it, Wiggle! They'll grow in a crevice! They'll grow in a crack! They came through the doorway, inside your backpack.

Squirt:
Come back here!

Bounce:
They'll grow where it's damp! They'll grow where it's dark! And here in the bedroom-- they'll grow from the bark!

Mom sent over some breakfast!

[picking up a seed] Go long, Dragon!

Dragon:

Miss Spider:
Helping a neighbor by doing a good deed is thanks enough for me.

Spiderus:

Miss Spider:
Although, you could pass on our good deed by doing something nice for somebuggy else instead.

Squirt:
That sounds kind of neat.

Dragon:
But why somebuggy else? We did all the work!

Spiderus:
And besides, why do something for somebuggy if they're not doing something for you?

Miss Spider:
Because doing a good deed and helping a neighbor is like planting a seed. You plant a good deed, then watch it grow and bloom like a flower.

Squirt:

Miss Spider:
Sometimes a good idea can be more powerful than muscles.

Miss Spider:
A playhouse? Holley, that's a great idea. Instead of always playing in the treehouse, our little bugs could play in...

Squirt:
Come on in, everybody! See our spiderific new ground house!

Spiderus:
Such a ghastly hullabaloo. And right under my gate. That's it. I can't stand it anymore. [He growls and then bumps into Dragon, who just zipped out of the ground house]

Dragon:
Sorry, Spiderus. It's really crowded in there. I had to come out and stretch my wings.

Spiderus:
Forced out of your own clubhouse, eh, Dragon? Well, that's doesn't seem quite fair.

Dragon:
What do you mean?

Spiderus:
Well, aren't you the eldest?

Dragon:
Yeah.

Spiderus:
Well, as the eldest, you should make the rules, don't you think?

Miss Spider:
[to Dragon] Honey, a place is special not because you keep folks out but because you let them in.

Mom? Why do we always have to share with everybuggy?

Miss Spider:
Because that's what families do.

Dragon:
Awww. Can't I have something that's just mine?

Miss Spider:
Of course you can, Dragon. But if you don't share, who's gonna want to share with you?

Bounce:
Mom, what is going on?

Miss Spider:
We're celebrating Heartwood Day, Bounce.

Shimmer:
What's that?

Mr. Mantis:
When a tree falls in Sunny Patch, we celebrate!

Dragon:
Why?

Beetrice:
Because when something as huge as a tree falls down, it reminds us that all living things are precious.

Mr. Mantis:
That's nice, Dragon. You brought a drag-glider to share.

Dragon:
This is mine. I didn't bring anything.

Dragon:
Nothing?

Mr. Mantis:
I'm tired of sharing.

But who got bit by the lovebug?

Squirt:

Dragon:

[Lilly appears, clears her throat and taps Bounce]

Huh?

[Lilly holds up a heart-shaped Valentine and giggles]

[Lilly kisses Bounce]

Bounce:
Arriba! I got bit by the love bug! I got bit by the love bug!

Dragon:
Yuck! Bounce!

Shimmer:
Way to go.

Bounce:
Arriba! Arriba!

[the various bugs all chatter and shout out "Happy Heartwood Day!"]

Holley:
Ah. Nothing like a good game of buggy bridge.

Miss Spider:
Especially when you've got a great hand.

Miss Spider:

Miss Spider:
I'll call down to the ground house when supper's ready.

Snowdrop:
Yeah, we'll be in the meadow. Bye.

Holley:
Hmm. Think the kids are already tired of their brand new ground house?

Miss Spider:
I wonder.

[Bounce expresses his dissatisfaction with Dragon's rules in plain terms, then leaves him alone in the ground house]

Bounce:
I'm sorry, Dragon. I don't have fun when you are bossy. I'm gonna leave now. Bye-bye.

Dragon:
Hi, Spiderus. I just wanted to invite you to join our club, too! You know what they say - "the more, the buggier."

Spiderus:

Spiderus:
Dream bug! Humbug!

Bounce:
Don't you want the dream bug to visit you?

Spiderus:
Why don't you leave the berries right here? I-I'll watch them for you and then bounce by for a taste anytime you're hungry.

Bounce:
Nuh-uh! I've got to get these berries over to Mrs. Earwig. In a hurry!

Miss Spider:
Dragon was right. There's so much we can't teach him, Holley. I know he belongs with us, but he needs to follow his heart. He belongs with dragonflies.

Holley:
Hmm, I knew this day would come. I just never thought it would be so soon.

Bounce:
Cookie! Careful of the blue jay!

Miss Spider:
Cookie's fun now. Bird's don't eat bugs that eat lots of milkweed.

Dragon:
Really? I'm going to eat lots of milkweed then. [takes a big bite of a milkweed leaf] Blech. I'd rather be bird bait.

Pansy:
I found the parasol! That was a great hiding place, Shimmer! It's broken!

Shimmer:
That's okay. It's an old one. Mom said we could throw it away when we're done playing with It.

Grace:
Hi, there!

There'll be no more coming over for breakfast every day! [Whiffy and Grace gasp in shock.] I mean no more coming over just breakfast! You'll stay for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Grace:
You mean I can stay at Camp Stinkbug?

Stinky:
You betcha! Shake on it! [Stinky, Whiffy and Grace perform an elaborate secret handshake and Grace releases Asian ladybug stink.]

Shimmer:
Ew.

Stinky:
I never get tired of that.

Miss Spider:
Like Whiffy said, they are a bunch of stinkers.

[tossing a ball] Here it comes, Shimmer!

Shimmer:
[notices that a leaf has blown on top of Grace] Grace! Are you okay?

Grace:

Miss Spider:
Well, you know what Grandma Betty always says, "To find your family, there's one certain test."

Shimmer:
"Find the creatures who love you the best."

Stinky:
We're those creatures.

Squirt:

Holley:

Squirt:
There goes another one!

[Ned and Ted groan]

Miss Spider:

Ted, Ned:
Yeah, you're welcome.

Wilver:
Ah ho. Ole! This reminds me of the time I had to fly through a hailstorm on a very special mission. The hailstones were as big as blueberries! They were huge! They were raining down on all sides. Ay caramba!

Shimmer:
Forget the bugpipes. Dancing is what I really want to do.

Squirt:
Hmm. Why doesn't anybuggy believe me?

Pippy:
It's hard to believe in something you can't see. I know.

Miss Spider:

Dragon:

Holley:
[chuckles] Sounds like our little jewel beetle got bit by the music bug.

Shimmer:
It looks like so much fun! Can get some bugpipes? Please! Please!

Miss Spider:
It's okay for everybuggy to have different tastes.

Squirt:
[annoyed because Bounce tasted his lice cream cone without asking] Bounce!

Miss Spider:
But it's not okay to taste everybuggy's without asking, Bounce.

Bounce:
Sorry, Mom!

Holley:
You didn't let us down, honeybug. You were just trying to find something you love to do.

Shimmer:
And you know what? When I'm dancing, I even love to practice!

Miss Spider:
It usually works out that way.

Spinner:
So would it be okay if I took lessons from Mr. Macbeetle?

Miss Spider:

Holley:
Och aye!

Shimmer:
Ahh, Dad!

Miss Spider:
Shimmer? What happened to your Bug-a-Boo Day play?

Shimmer:
Guess it turned out to be a bug-a-boo-boo. I already canceled the show.

Squirt:
[regarding Felix the frog] Guys, we're not really gonna let him loose, are we?

Shimmer:
Well, are going to be celebrating Be Good to Bugs Day soon.

Spinner:
And shouldn't Be Good to Bugs Day mean be good to every kind of animal?

Shimmer:
You're right! Come on.

Miss Spider:
I think it's important that my little bugs learn that frogs can be dangerous, but you don't have to be scared, kids.

Spiderus:
You are hereby members of the Sunny Patch Anti-Frog Squad. Junior grade, of course.

Stinky:
Welcome aboard, kids!

Frank:
Yeah!

Dragon:
So what's our first adventure?

Spiderus:
Fetch me a berry. I had a light breakfast.

Holley:
Did you actually see this frog?

Frank:
Uh, not really.

Holley:
Then let's not panic.

Spiderus:
The frog has the children! The frog has the children! Get the frog! Get the frog! Charge!

Holley:
Bugs and beetles, critters of all ages, it's time to play the "Wheel of Choice!" Each petal has a symbol that stands for a different way to stop fighting. Spin the wheel and see what it lands on.

Holley:
He just needs a little help seeing the right thing to do sometimes. Don't you, Dragon?

[Dragon giggles nervously and Miss Spider sighs]

Frank:
Well, time for me to go and join my friends. You've all been very kind.

Dragon:
Thanks, Frank!

Miss Spider:
Goodbye, Frank!

Bounce:
Bye-bye.

Dragon:
[seeing Frank join a group of fireflies] Hey, look!

Bounce:
Wow. Pretty.

Shimmer:
Hmm.

Beetrice:
Hello, Shimmer.

Shimmer:
Hi, Beetrice!

Beetrice:
That's a fine looking scarecrow.

Shimmer:
Thank you. We're going on a mushroom hunt today, and he should keep the crows from stealing what we find.

Miss Spider:
Are you two friends again?

Squirt:
Yep.

Shimmer:
We apologized.

Miss Spider:
Good! Then it's high time you come join the mushroom safari. I'm so excited! We found a whole bunch of chanterelle mushrooms.

Shimmer:
Well, maybe we'll join you in a little while, mom.

Squirt:
Yeah! Right now, we're having too much fun being stumped.

Miss Spider:
You are?

[the three jump and cheer]

Pansy:
Do you think you could teach me to sing like that?

Snowdrop:
Sure. I'm your twin sister. I'll help you.

Pansy:
Great! So what do we do first?

Snowdrop:
Singin' while you're swingin' helps you keep your rhythm. Give it a try.

Ivy:
[regarding Holley] He's totally spiderific.

Mandrake:
In all of Sunny Patch, he's the very best.

Spiderus:
Ah, my sweet offspring. They're so proud of me.

Spiderus:
[singing] You'd never know I'm feeling blue / Every other dad gets a special day / But I get a hat and a song, hooray.

Holley:
I don't understand it. My family always surprises me with a party this time of year.

Spiderus:
Heh heh heh. Welcome to the club.

Holley:
Oh, stop it.

Holley:

Squirt:
Come on, let's hide.

Stinky:
Wow! A stakeout! Oh goody!

So Spiderus turned out to be the real stinker in this story. And me? I came out smelling like a rose. Because I'm Stinky; Stinky P.I.

What's a listening walk?

Holley:
It's when you go walking and listen for night noises. Then you try and figure out who or what is making each noise.

Stinky:
Sounds like a job for Stinky the stinkbug. Private investigator. P.I. for short.

Bounce:
More like P.U.

Holley:
Oh, you know, we had a very, really big lunch at Bull Rush Bend.

Snowdrop:

Holley:
Huh? [moans]

Miss Spider:
I did say that, didn't I?

Bounce:
You might even like it. Like it?

Miss Spider:
Yes. Oh, yes. It's different.

Holley:

Squirt, Bounce, Shimmer, Dragon, Snowdrop:

Mr. Mantis:
Well done, Bug Scouts. Now a few of you have a very special trip coming up. Bounce, Squirt and Snowdrop are going to hike to the top of the big tulip tree.

Squirt:

Shimmer:

Spinner:
Yippee! Look at me! I'm a bug! I'm a bug! [croaks] Hop-hop-hooray!

Spinner:
Careful, Felix. You don't want to wreck your costume.

Wiggle:
And bugs don't go [croaks] .

Felix:
We're snug as bugs in a rug, aren't we?

Miss Spider:
[chuckles] Yes we are, Felix.

Miss Spider:
I wanna be a bug when I grow up!

Squirt:
I'm sorry. I was building a castle with my blocks and I guess I kinda

Spinner:
lost track of time?

Squirt:
Sorry, everybuggy.

Squirt:
Oh no, Eddy's party. What time is it?

Miss Spider:
Hmm...

Squirt:
Uh-oh. I know what time that look means. I'm late, huh?

Dr. Beebetter:
Holley, Miss Spider, the only thing wrong with your little bug is a bad case of the fakey flu.

Miss Spider, Holley:
Huh?

Miss Spider:
Holley, do you know a cure for pretending to be sick?

Holley:
Hmm.

Dragon:
I guess I kind of pretended to be sick.

Miss Spider:
Being sick is serious and pretending to be sick is like telling a lie.

Holley, Miss Spider, Dragon, Squirt, Bounce, Shimmer:

Squirt:

Shimmer:

Miss Spider:
Princess or not, you still have to be good to bugs. Even if they are your brothers and sisters.

Miss Spider:
[singing] So listen and look and take in Mother Nature's show / You are much richer than you know / You have much more than just silver and gold.

Shimmer:
I'm just a plain old beetle. These heat sensors are useless.

Miss Spider:
That's not true. Your heat sensors make you a very special bug.

Miss Spider:
Ouch!

Holley:
Oh, sorry honey. I've got eight left feet tonight.

Miss Spider:
It's okay, sweetheart. I have seven to spare. [They kiss] I'm feeling like a princess.

Shimmer:
Around Sunny Patch, I always feel like a princess.

Miss Spider:
[singing] Bug buddies and your neighbors all watch out for you / And if you look around you'll see more treasures too/ Like soft summer breezes so gentle on your face / And the moon that makes spider webs look like lace.

Miss Spider:
When you're grateful for who you are and what you have, you can't help but feel happy.

Spider Family:
We're happy.

Bounce:
Happy, happy, happy!

Shimmer:
She's wearing a crown. Do you think that she's a real princess?

Bounce:
Are you a real princess or just a pretend one?

Shimmer:
Bounce.

Bounce:
What? What did I do?

Shimmer:
Phew. I'm pooped.

Snowdrop:
And I can't find a single dewdrop to drink. Ugh.

Shimmer:
Yeah. I'm a baked beetle.

Ted:
Not half-bad when you hold your nose, Ned.

Ned:
[sniffs cow pie and gasps in dismay] Nope. It's all bad, Ted.

Holley:

Squirt:
What do you think about there, Dad?

Holley:
Oh, all kinds of things. Big things, small things, silly things. You can even make an important decision, like when I decided to ask the most special spider in the world to marry me. [makes kissing noise and chuckles happily]

Miss Spider:
I thought I'd find you here. What are you smiling about?

Holley:
[sighs happily] I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have you and the kids.

Miss Spider, Holley:
Aah.

Spindella:
I told you before I left, dear. Your dinner's in the oven. Make sure you use a potholder when you take it out.

Spiderus:
Oven? Pot holders? It's all too much. When are you coming home?

Miss Spider:
Jumping junebugs! What's the hurry?

Squirt:
We're going to set the record for having the most fun in one day!

Bounce:
Fun!

Miss Spider:
Eventually, the cloud gets so full that it has to let everything out as

Squirt:
Rain.

Miss Spider:
rain. That's what we call it when a cloud cries. Isn't it, Holley?

Holley:
Yep, clouds, little bugs, big bugs, even Moms and Dads sometimes need to cry.

Squirt:
Don't be embarrassed. Big bugs do cry. When they need to.

Miss Spider:
Honey, a painting doesn't have to look exactly like something to be good.

Squirt:
[singing] Paint a circle and a curly line

Shimmer:
Now it's a grape on a golden vine
