If there is a war with Mexico, it's going to play havoc with my wine cellar.

Constance:
You know I fell in love with you during our very first dance.

George:
Was it my face or the uniform?

Constance:
It was the way you looked when Major Laferty cut in on us, like a little lost puppy dog.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
Sometimes... Orry's face is... so clear to me.

Justin:
[outside the house] Nathaniel! Get your bloody carcass over here!

Maum Sally:
[talking about Justin] What kind of man is he anyway?

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
Perhaps that's why I remember Orry. To help me forget my life here at Resolute.

George:
[In the middle of a battle, Orry is hit]... ORRY!

Justin:
[after Madeline gives her opinion about secession in public] My dear, you forget yourself. Nobody here in this company cares what you have to say.

[drags her out of the room]

George:
They're married, Orry. He's an arrogant ass but there's nothing you can do about it.

Orry Main:
I'd like to horse whip him!

George:
So would I. But it's not the time or the place.

George:
[Orry's at the hospital, George is visiting him] I'm in love Orry.

[laughs]

George:
Her name is Constance Flynn and she's wonderful. Now I know what you meant about Madeline and you.

[Orry looks sad]

George:
She's warm, she's funny. She's beautiful. She's a first class cook too.

[laughs]

George:
I think I've been looking for her all my life. When I get up the courage, I'm going to ask her to marry me.

Orry Main:
[cool as ice] That's wonderful George. I'm very happy for you.

Orry Main:
[talking about Madeline] Until you've been in love, you don't know what it's like. Nothing else seems to matter.

George:
Then you sir, are a romantic fool.

Elkanah Bent:
[threatening George and Orry] And you be on your guard. Because I won't forget you two. I won't forget you two, ever.

[leaves]

George:
That man is crazy.

Orry Main:
So we better believe him.

George:
And be on our guard? For how long...? The rest of our lifes?

George:
You didn't think I'd let you go to Mexico without me, did ya?

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
[about George] He's a very good friend, isn't he?

Orry Main:
He's the best I'll ever have.

[long pause]

Orry Main:
It nearly killed me being away from you.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
Please... we mustn't say things like that to each other.

Orry Main:
Why not? We feel them.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
There's nothing we can do.

Orry Main:
You don't love him. You are not his.

Orry Main:
I want you to meet me tomorrow. Just to talk.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
What can we talk about? All the things that will never be?

Tillet Main:
Priam needed to be punished!

Orry Main:
I would not punish an animal that way, and neither would you!

Tillet Main:
Don't get me anymore of your yankee sermons!

Tillet Main:

[pause]

Orry Main:
How would you like me, to come up to Lehigh Station, telling you how to run your life, to change the way you have always lived?

[pause]

Orry Main:
But I mean this George. You and me... we're good friends, and if we wanna keep that friendship, there are certain things we can never say to each other. Some things we can never talk about.

George:
[long pause] I guess you're right.

[Orry begins to talk, George interrupts him]

George:
We're supposed to be fighting Mexicans... not each other!

George:
[in the middle of a battle] We can't stay here! And we can't go back!

Orry Main:
That's what Bent had in mind!

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
[slaves are being punished] It's my fault!

Maum Sally:
It's nobody's fault. It's just the way things are.

Elkanah Bent:
What do you want, Hazard? Your manner is offensive. And what's more, you're out of uniform.

George:
I'm glad you notice. Or else I couldn't give you this.

[punches Bent]

Orry Main:
George, there's some things people never recover from.

Orry Main:
[Orry is drunk] I think I'll be the judge of that.

George:
Do you? Well I don't think you've got the judgement of a mule right now, all you do is sit there and feel sorry for yourself.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
I'm not afraid.

Orry Main:
I'm afraid for you.

Madeline Fabray LaMotte:
Well then, this is all we have.

Elkanah Bent:
I have great leadership abilities. My instructors at West Point compared my tactical maneuvers to Napoleon's.

Sen. Charles Edwards:
Elkanah, You should learn to curb your enthusiasm for yourself.

Brett:
[at west point graduation, about Billy] Oh Ashton isn't he hansome?

Brett:

Virgilia:

Orry Main:
[talking with George as the Civil War breaks out in 1861, and they realize they'll be on opposite sides] You know, years ago John Calhoun said that West Point men would lead great armies.

[shakes head sadly]

Orry Main:
He never thought they'd be leading them against each other.
