Racket Squad

[Introduction to each episode]

Captain Braddock:
[to the camera] What you are about to see is a real-life story, taken from the files of the police racket and bunco squads, business protective associations and similar sources around the country. It is intended to expose the confidence game - the carefully worked-out frauds by which confidence men take more money each year from the American public than all the bank robbers and thugs with their violence.

[Epilogue to each episode]

Captain Braddock:
[to the camera] I'm closing this case now - or rather, the courts will - but there'll be others, because that's the way the world is built. There are people who can slap you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other. And it could happen to you.

Herman 'Smiley' Gibbons:
I've never been a stool pigeon before.

Police Capt. John Braddock:
Sit down, Smiley.

Herman 'Smiley' Gibbons:
Thank you.

Police Capt. John Braddock:
Now, what can I do for you... or what can you do for me?

Vivian:
Another one of Mr. Morgan's goons, I suppose.

[Braddock produces his police credentials]

Police Capt. John Braddock:
Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm on the other side of the fence.

Connie Underwood:
You know Mother can't leave. Her sacroiliac is twisted

Charles Underwood:
Too bad its not her neck

Sherry Pine:
[Whether Tom Underwood could be swindled] He is as ripe as a cantaloupe in August.

Capt. John Braddock:
A word of advice. If you must play card games for money, keep the stakes low, know what you're doing, watch whom you're playing with or what happened to Betty Grant and her friends could happen to you!

Capt. John Braddock:
If you're looking for a nursery school, make certain that you select one that meets these basic requirements of the law. Teachers trained in nursery education, nutrition, and child psychology. Proper heating facilities and fire safety. All the care and precaution of your own home. If you can't meet this problem alone, consult your local Department of Social Welfare. It's you, the taxpayer, who supports these fine groups, and you'll find them eager to assist you. This is sound advice, so please heed it. Otherwise, what happened to others could happen to you!

Capt. John Braddock:
Let's face the facts - no one's going to give you something for nothing. Don't be a sucker for these criminals who are so confident they can fool anyone - even you!

[Mary tries to warn the businessmen in the next room but the gag over her mouth muffles her cries]

Harrington:
I assure you, gentlemen, that our project will have better construction than this hotel.

Grover:
Us kids never get Christmas presents.

Charlie Dooley:
Oh, of course you do. You... Uh... Didn't you get anything last year?

Grover:
Sure. My mom had my shoes re-soled.

Anne Marie Scarpita:
[brightly] I got vitamin pills!

[first lines]

Police Capt. John Braddock:
[opening narration] I call this case "The Long Shot". Unlike most rackets, it had a humorous side, though it wasn't at all funny to the people involved. Our story starts with a little old lady...

Beware of a confidence man, "He'll pat you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other".
