The Drifter

[first lines]

Tex:
Well, hello.

The Drifter:
How do you do, sir.

Tex:
My name's Tex.

The Drifter:
Glad to know ya.

Tex:
What can I do for you?

The Drifter:
Well, sir, I'd like to get a few supplies.

Tex:
Well, fine. Yessir.

The Drifter:
Thrown them in that old sack there.

Tex:
Be happy to do it.

[the Drifter is tuning Tex's guitar]

Tex:
Hey, you handle that thing pretty good! You play and sing?

The Drifter:
Aw, me and my old horse... About all.

Tex:
Why don't you sing one for us?

The Drifter:
All right. I can't play too well standin' up here.

Tex:
Well, sit down! Make yourself at home.

[last lines]

Tex:
You know somethin', boys... Goin to hear a lot of that fella.

Sykes:
Absolutely.

Tex:
...The Drifter.

[last lines]

The Drifter:
Boy, this really is a ghost town.

[first lines]

Archie the Bartender:
Sarsaparilla on a Saturday night? That sound funny.

The Drifter:
That sounds good to me whether it's Saturday night, Sunday night, Monday or Thursday.

Archie the Bartender:
Say, the folks call you "The Drifter", huh?

The Drifter:
Yeah, I've been called "The Drifter" so long my own name sounds funny.

Archie the Bartender:
I guess it ain't none of my business, but where are you headed, Drifter, anyhow?

The Drifter:
Well, you know, as much as I love the West and the wide-open spaces, I haven't been in the South in a long time. You know, that's where they have the beautiful women and fast horses.

Archie the Bartender:
Why don't you stick around here where we have fast women and pretty horses?

[introducing his saloon's new entertainer]

Archie the Bartender:
This young fella is gonna play and sing for us. Sit down there... What did you say your name was?

The Drifter:
[whispering] Marty Robbins.

Archie the Bartender:
Bobbins?

The Drifter:
[whispering] Robbins.

Archie the Bartender:
Ladies and gentlemen, ahhh, The Drifter!

[the Drifter explains his footloose ways to Kate]

The Drifter:
I just don't want to be tied down. I'd feel like a caged animal.

Miss Kate:
Ahh, I bet it'd be a lot of fun tamin' you!

[the old trapper sings "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen" very off-key]

The Drifter:
Hey, wait a minute. Wait! That is absolutely the wrong chord there, Old Timer. That's bad!

Old Trapper:
Wrong chord, wrong chord. I've been a-singin' this tune for forty years. I reckon I know what's wrong and right about it.

The Drifter:
Well, I'll tell ya, that's a long time to be wrong.

Old Trapper:
All right, New Timer, you show me how.
