The Legend of Prince Valiant

Rowenne:
I thought the king said we should avoid this place.

Prince Valiant:
He did. But if we take his advice, we'll never learn the swamp's secrets.

Rowenne:
That'll be fine with me.

Prince Valiant:
Oh, where's your sense of adventure, Rowanne?

Rowenne:
I think it was carried away by that falcon-sized mosquito.

Prince Valiant:
Look at this thing. What do you suppose it means?

Rowenne:
From the look of it it means we should go back.

Prince Valiant:
It would only mean that if we were faint of heart.

Arn:
I don't see any more guards.

Rowenne:
Then let's find Morgana and repay her for her hospitality.

Arn:
Thank goodness you're here.

Rowenne:
Yes. Thank goodness all three of us are here together.

Arn:
Valiant. What's wrong, what's going on up there?

Lady Morgana:
[from behind] The same thing as down here.

Lady Morgana:
I think it's time to end this irritation named Prince Valiant.

Lady Morgana:
Destroy me and you will all die as well.

Rowenne:
You might kill us, but not before one of us gets you.

Lady Morgana:
But you'll still die, my young friends.

Prince Valiant:
That might be worth it.

[last lines]

Arn:
Whatever our dreams or nightmares, we will face them together.

Prince Valiant:
And together, we will succeed.

Princess Aleta:
[to the one who took it while she was swimming] Now give me back my dress.

Prince Valiant:
[knocks the sword she holds out away with his own and steps into the light] I'll give you back your dress, on one condition: you wear it on our wedding day.

Princess Aleta:
[amused] If there *is* a wedding day, I'll consider it.

[they kiss]

Rowanne:
[amused] You are truly a bottomless pit.

Arn:
[chomping on a drumstick] I won't have any more after this one.

Rowanne:
Nor any less is my guess.

[they laugh with Valiant]

King Arthur:
This fighting, this setting fires, it has to stop. It's not right and it is not going to change anything. You, sir, would you kill this man simply because his heritage differs from yours? And would you volunteer to tell his family that he is never coming home again? Listen to me, people. This is not how we do things in Camelot. We can all get along, we *must* get along. Last night, we joined together, newcomer and Camelotian alike, and together we saved much more than was lost. This is our home, it belongs to all of us. We can work out our differences. If we do not... see for yourselves what we will be left with.

Rowanne:
Have you ever seen such destruction?

Prince Valiant:
Yes. But only as a result of warfare.

Arn:
No war can match the fury of nature, Valiant.

Harold:
A good friend showed me that there's no shame in being a peasant.

Harold:
Old friends and a chance to make a new start. What more reason to smile is there?

Prince Valiant:
Camelot is saddened by your loss. But armed with new tools and your old spirit, Reagan will soon be reborn.

Arn:
Harold, you can't know how glad I am to see you again.

Harold:
Oh, yes I can. I have missed you too, Arn.

Will:
It's an honor to meet you, Sir Arn.

Arn:
I'm not a Sir.

Harold:
But one day he will be. And he'll make a fine knight of the Round Table.

Harold:
My storytelling skills are far too great just to stop using them altogether.

Sarah:
You see, Arn, Harold has told us so much about you, we feel like you're a part of the family.

Harold:
He is part of the family.

Harold:
[hugging Arn] It's good to see you again... son.

Arn:
To be one with nature, you must move *with* the forest, not intrude on it.

Harold:
You are brave, kind, honorable, and loyal. What more could a king ever want? I love you, as if you were my own son.

Arn:
Mercy. Please, sir, show him some mercy, he has a wife and a child!

Blake of Haven:
Mercy? I'll show him mercy. The same mercy he showed my brother.

Arn:
There is nothing to do now but mourn. And that I can do only by myself.

Prince Valiant:
Would you abandon all that you love in order to pursue that which you hate?

Arn:
What good is it to wield a sword in the name of truth and justice if I turn away from justice when it's most needed?

Prince Valiant:
But revenge is *empty* justice, Arn. Killing Blake is not going to fill that emptiness that Harold's death has left. Only time, and love, will do that.

Arn:
Valiant, in my life now I have lost not one father but two. The first time I was a child. I could do nothing. Now I must do something, I *must*. If I don't, I don't think I'll be able to go on.

Blake of Haven:
[being choked] M... m... mercy!

Arn:
I'll show you the same mercy you showed Harold!

Rowanne:
We love you, Arn. And no momentary weakness will change that.

[she, he, and Valiant hug]

Arn:
How can I blessed with such wonderful friends when I have proven myself so unworthy?

Rowanne:
Arn, how can you say that?

Arn:
It's true, Rowanne. I discarded the ideals of Camelot to seek my revenge. How can such a man ever hope to become a knight of the Round Table?

Prince Valiant:
You made a mistake, Arn. But you corrected it. Because of you, Blake will stand trial according to the laws of Camelot.

Arn:
But I almost committed murder.

Prince Valiant:
Yes. But you did not. That was the ultimate test of your spirit.

Rowanne:
All you have learned here will only make you a wiser and more compassionate man.

Sarah:
You have displayed the true strength of the ideals of Camelot.

Arn:
But...

Sarah:
Harold loved you like a son, Arn.

[kisses him]

Sarah:
Fulfill his dream. Take the sword and become a knight of the Round Table. Become that which Harold could never be.

Will:
Please, Arn. I want you to have it.

Arn:
[hugging him] I'll make you proud of me. I promise.

[last lines]

Merlin:
[playing with him] Thank you, Arthur. I can now promote this pawn.

King Arthur:
Hmm. Complex game, chess. Sometimes one piece must be lost so that another may advance.

Merlin:
I suspect you're not the only one to have learned that lesson of late.

King Hugo:
If not for him all our lives would have been lost at sea.

Prince Valiant:
If not for him, our lives would never have been in danger in the first place.

Prince Valiant:
You used me very well.

Arn:
You're a part of my heart, Rowanne. There's nothing that could ever change that, nothing in this world.

Prince Valiant:
I'm looking for two friends: a young man and a very beautiful young woman.

Prince Valiant:
Are you hurt, Rowanne?

Rowanne:
[crying and hugging him] No. And I pray that you will not be, either.

Princess Aleta:
After you've finished with that knife, Father, perhaps you'll want to bury it in the backs of your hosts.

Sir Mordred:
Those bungling idiots better find that girl before Valiant does; otherwise my plans will be ruined. And so, might I add, will your miserable lives.

King Hugo:
[pounding the table] This is an outrage!

Princess Aleta:
No, Father. It is the truth.

Prince Valiant:
[Hugo exits] Oh, you are a fine one to speak the word "truth" with such pride, Princess. Being that you are another viper in Mordred's poisonous nest.

Rowanne:
Valiant, no. I heard Aleta speak out against the plot. She was forced by her father to keep silent, but she wanted no part of it.

Prince Valiant:
[she starts to go] Aleta! Wait!

Princess Aleta:
Wait, Valiant? Wait for you to call me a viper again? We have nothing more to say to each other.

Prince Valiant:
If you knew the truth from the beginning, why didn't you tell me? Why?

Rowanne:
It was only because... because I love you, Valiant. I was afraid of losing you.

Prince Valiant:
You love me? This is how you show your love? With lies and deceit?

Prince Valiant:
Whatever love or friendship was between us, Rowanne, you have betrayed. It is you who are the viper. I cannot stand the sight of you.

Sir Mordred:
[as he chokes in rage and has to be restrained by Guinevere] Well, Arthur, I can only assume I'm no longer a welcome guest here.

King Arthur:
You have my leave, Mordred, to be gone from Camelot, now and forever.

Sir Mordred:
That, Sire, is one promise I cannot make. For I *will* return to Camelot, and when I do, it will be to take your throne.

Rowanne:
My heart beats as though it's been torn from me.

Merlin:
Life's lessons must sometimes be learned at a terrible cost.

[first lines]

Merlin:
The universe. Vast, desolate, cold. Still and lifeless, save for a solitary outpost. The planet Earth. Our fragile Eden. A precious vibrant stone glittering in the cosmic void. How is it that humankind seems so intent on charting a course that would lead to its destruction? Threatening it with the ruthless hand of war, dishonoring it with the grim parade of man's inhumanity to man? It seems at times that we have eaten of a vile root, that we have abandoned reason, leaving many of us to believe that peace on Earth is unattainable. A dream dreamed by a fool. But it is from such a dream that hope is born, and men of courage draw their strength.

Arn:
[grimly] What a lovely place to spend Christmas.

King Arthur:
Here now, this is no time for melancholy. Go and join the others in the banquet hall. The bells will be ringing soon enough. [Denys runs off] That is my hope, and my prayer.

Rowanne:
My father will be lighting the Yule log right about now in Brdigeford. [chuckles] And Mother will be after him about spreading ashes all over hearth and home.

Arn:
How can we be at war in the season of peace?

Merlin:
We can no more abandon the celebration of Christmas than we can abandon hope itself.

King Arthur:
Hope is all we have now. Hope that Valiant and the others will put an end to this senseless violence... That they will soon find their way home to Camelot.

Prince Valiant:
Before King Arthur, the people of Camelot lived as you do: constantly fighting but it never changed anything.

Prince Thomas:
And King Arthur's put an end to that? How?

Prince Valiant:
He has a dream, Thomas. It's called the New Order. It's a way of life, where might does not make right, Where people live by truth and justice, not by the sword.

Prince Thomas:
What a wonderful notion that is, Valiant! If only we could live that way here!

King Arthur:
With the lighting of these candles, we signal the coming of the Christmas spirit, and we pray that it will remain in our hearts for all the year. Peace to all.

Crowd:
PEACE TO ALL!

Prince Valiant:
It is in your power to stop the killing now. The choice is yours.

Prince Thomas:
But I can't just... This is our life, Valiant. We are warring tribes. The ideas of Camelot could never work here.

Prince Valiant:
[touching his shoulders] There is one way to find out.

Prince Thomas:
Let my father's blood be the last to be spilled.

Prince Thomas:
How can we ever find peace when the fires of hatred rage out of control in the hearts of such men?

Prince Valiant:
There must be a way, Thomas. And we must find it soon. Or God help us all.

Denys:
I don't understand, Merlin. It's so peaceful here. People are fighting and dying... It's Christmas Eve. Can't they even stop for that?

Merlin:
War becomes a kind of addiction for some, Denys. A violent drug which leaves its victims only able to live in battle and feed on danger.

Denys:
How will it ever stop then?

Merlin:
Mmm, how indeed?

Prince Thomas:
People of North Gallis, and people of Lindem, we have been at war far too long. Our soil was stained with the blood of the innocent. Our homes lie in devastation and our families are scattered and broken. And we've done it all in the name of this. A book. A book that has lain unopened for so long that no one alive today can even recall what it says.

[reading]

Prince Thomas:
"Let it be decreed that this land belongs to no one king or another. That this land belongs to the people. And that it shall be the shelter and domain of those who dwell upon it, in peace."

[last lines]

Prince Valiant:
I bring you tidings of hope, Your Majesties. For at this moment, there is peace on Earth.

Merlin:
Peace on Earth. There are those who call that notion the promise of fools, nothing but a dream, And if that is so, then, let us become dreamers. One and all.

Prince Valiant:
It's so wonderful when you've found your true love.

Rowanne:
And even more wonderful to know your love loves you in return.

Merlin:
Saturn is rising. It must be that all the planets revolve around the sun. It is the only explanation.

Merlin:
[to a frog] You have nothing to fear, my little green friend; I just need the use of some of your water.

Arn:
I love you, Rowanne.

Rowanne:
And I love you, Val- Arn.

Rowanne:
You want my sword? [breaks it; tossing the pieces down] Then have it! It's broken and worthless, as all your promises of justice and equality!

King Arthur:
Merlin! I thought we'd lost you!

Merlin:
No. You'll never lose me, Arthur. Though sometimes our paths might take us in different directions, we'll always arrive at the same destination.

Arn:
I said our love will never be a romance. Not because I am not in love with you, but because you are not in love with me.

Arn:
I will always be in love with you. But it is wrong to to try to live a lie no matter how much we wish that lie to be the truth.

[first lines]

Lord Kellar:
If you could try to provide us your attention, Merlin, we will try to be as interesting as a view from the window.

Merlin:
The windows, unlike your maps, Lord Kellar, looks out upon a world of borderless wonders.

Lord Kellar:
My dear Lady Morgana, I shall be forever in your debt.

Lord Kellar:
No, not forever. But long enough.

Lady Morgana:
These may be Merlin's last hours. He should have the tenderness of a woman's care.

Prince Valiant:
I wouldn't be so ready to place Merlin in his grave yet, Lady Morgana.

Lady Morgana:
Take care, Valiant, that two graves are not required.

Merlin:
Where have you come from?

Lynette:
From the longings of your heart, dear Merlin.

Lady Morgana:
Enjoy your sweet dreams. May they last forever.

Prince Valiant:
We're looking for the Mighty Om.

The Mighty Om:
He's not here. [starts to go]

Prince Valiant:
Please! We're friends of Merlin's. He's in danger. He desperately needs the Mighty Om's help.

The Mighty Om:
[stops and turns] Poor Merlin. There is nothing I wouldn't do.

Prince Valiant:
You... You are the Mighty Om?

The Mighty Om:
Well, not all of us can be Merlin, you know.

The Mighty Om:
Looks aren't everything. Intelligence counts for something. And intelligence, my young friend, I have in abundance.

Merlin:
I could be risking my very life. Yet, Merlin would do the same for me. Then again, he is Merlin. He is Morgana's equal. And better.

Rowanne:
Oh, Valiant, he's arguing with himself.

Prince Valiant:
And losing.

Lady Morgana:
Dream about how lovely how your life could have been.

Lynette:
Are you happy, Merlin? Here, with me?

Merlin:
Completely. I've never been more at peace.

Prince Valiant:
Oh, dear God. Please help her.

Merlin:
It, like everything your hand touches, is graced with sweetness and goodness.

Prince Valiant:
I thought she would always be with me, Arn. Until my arm was too old to lift a sword, my eyes too dim to aim an arrow. She brought me warmth and caring. Those were her gifts to me, Arn. And I can't bear to lose them.

Arn:
[grips his shoulders desperately] She brought those gifts to me as well, Valiant. I don't have your words, I don't know how to speak about what is in my heart. But I know what I feel when I look at Rowanne. I feel good. Strong. Could it be... that I love her?

Lady Morgana:
Arthur is calling you, Merlin. Don't listen to him. He's calling you away from your true love.

Lynette:
He offers you nothing but a cold solitary life!

Merlin:
He needs me. One day he will change the world, Lynette. And I must be there to help him.

Lady Morgana:
You have a strong will, Merlin, as do I.

Prince Valiant:
Don't leave me, Rowanne. Without your laughter, my world will be silent.

Prince Valiant:
Rowanne! Oh, my love! My sweet, sweet love!

Arn:
If you had to choose, Rowanne, between me or Valiant, who would you choose?

Rowanne:
Choose? Between my two best friends? Oh, Arn. It would be like asking me to, break my heart in two.

Prince Valiant:
You're not the fool you pretend to be, Om.

The Mighty Om:
No. Like you, I understand the true value of loyalty and friendship.

Arn:
Rowanne, I... I... I'm glad you're better.

Lady Morgana:
In this world of dreams I am indestructible! And now, I will destroy *you*!

Lady Morgana:
You failed with the wind. Do you care to try the earth?

Merlin:
As you wish, Dark Lady!

[last lines]

Lady Morgana:
How can it be?

Merlin:
You're a clever woman, Morgana. But there is much you have yet to learn.

Lady Morgana:
[sarcastically] Indeed.

Merlin:
Indeed. You have yet to learn, Morgana, that there is no power on Earth greater than the power of love. True love like, true friendship, is one of life's sweetest miracles.

Sir Gawain:
Never give an opponent quarter unless you are certain he is defeated.

Sir Gawain:
The next battle I'm in, I'll want you at my side.

Sir Gawain:
[his horse backs against him ramming him against the stable wall] Hold, you four-legged fool! Hold, I say!

Prince Valiant:
[gets it away] Gawain, are you hurt?

Sir Gawain:
[sinks to his knees with his arm to his torso; slowly] Only my pride, Valiant.

King Arthur:
A soldier who would put personal vendetta above the common goal is not only a threat to himself. He is a liability to the common battle.

King Arthur:
Is there nothing that escapes you, old friend?

Merlin:
Well, very little, I'm afraid.

Knight:
Not a man nor beast lost, Sir Gawain.

Queen Guinevere:
Then luck must indeed be with us.

Knight:
Luck, and the will of King Arthur.

Arn:
Cynan took your home, and your father's kingdom. You must hate him.

Prince Valiant:
With all my heart.

Arn:
His army is at Greystone. He may well be there.

Prince Valiant:
And if I find him, he may well die there.

Dylan:
You miss the point!

Rowanne:
Give me a crossbow and I'll *show* him the point.

Sir Gawain:
He is too young. Too volatile. Too reckless.

Merlin:
Indeed. And is he more reckless than a knight who would conceal a serious injury from his king as he is leading an army into battle?

Prince Valiant:
[praying] Give me strength.

Merlin:
You have the strength, Valiant.

Prince Valiant:
To fight, yes. But to lead an army, Merlin?

Dylan:
Guard, is all well here?

Prince Valiant:
[in disguise] Very well, Dylan.

Prince Valiant:
Before I return to Camelot, Sir Gawain, I must go back to Thule. I must stop Cynan, and reclaim my father's kingdom.

Sir Gawain:
Yes, I understand. But such a battle cannot be fought single-handed. Prince Valiant is in need of soldiers. Is there any among you willing to follow him into battle against King Cynan? [everyone cheers assent] It looks as if you've got yourself an army, boy.

John:
Do you see that cross there on the hill?

Prince Valiant:
Yes. Who is buried there?

John:
I am. Under that earth rests my old armor, my shield, my sword. The man I once was, the man I am no more.

Prince Valiant:
We can wear rags or we can wear suits of armor, but it doesn't change who we really are.

John:
And who am I, friend?

Prince Valiant:
A good, decent man. I just hope that one day, you will find it in your heart to believe it.

Horak:
And who is it I fight? The humbled knight or the village wreck?

John:
Let's find out.

Sir John:
I bring milord duke a belated wedding gift. A very large and ill-tempered one.

King Arthur:
It's good to be here, Lot.

Lot of Lothien:
I'm glad to be here, too, Arthur. But then, at my age, it's good to be anywhere. [they laugh]

Prince Valiant:
What have they done to you?

Merlin:
Other than wounding my pride, Valiant, and tearing a hole in my robe, not as much as may have appeared.

Merlin:
You see, there are certain advantages to wearing these billowing robes.

Leader:
The surreptitious Merlin is looking unexpectedly lively for someone who's supposed to be a corpse.

Merlin:
It was a dark time, a bleak time, without hope. A time before Arthur, when the very sky was falling down and the wrath of the stars dried up the crops in the fields.

King Uthur Pendragon:
Live by the sword - die by the sword!

King Uthur Pendragon:
Excalibur will ensure Arthur's birthright. I leave it in your keeping. With a prayer that, when he is grown, he will never have to use it.

Denys:
But, Merlin, I was always told that the story of the sword in the stone was only a legend.

Merlin:
It seems you have been misinformed, young Denys.

Leader:
Look to your life, young knight. 'Tis three to one.

Prince Valiant:
[Merlin and Denys knock the two henchmen unconscious] Three to one it is.

Denys:
Oh. Excalibur. The beauty of it takes my breath away.

Merlin:
The sight of it in Arthur's hands is often enough to cow his foes. There is great power in legends, Denys. And more often than not a measure of the truth.

Lot of Lothien:
Finish it, boy.

King Arthur:
No, Lot of Lothien. I'll not help you escape your shame that easily.

Queen Guinevere:
You seem a trifle overheated, Princess. Perhaps it would be best if you tried to cool off a bit.

Princess Alyssa:
Oh, Lady Guinevere. I'm sorry, were you talking to me?

Queen Guinevere:
Let us set two things straight, Princess. First, I am *Queen* Guinevere, not "Lady". And second, be warned: if ever again I find you draped upon my husband like a melted candle upon a stick, I will personally see to it that the next time you appear in public, you will do so contained within a coffin.

King Arthur:
Gwen... you... you must continue our work... here. We must have peace. No matter what happens to me, Camelot and Velwyn must... become... friends.

Queen Guinevere:
[crying] I know, my love. The ideals of Camelot must live on.

Princess Alyssa:
We must leave immediately.

Sir Mordred:
*I* must leave; *you* must get out of my way.

[last lines]

Queen Guinevere:
It's wonderful to see you smile again, my love.

King Arthur:
Yes, I was just thinking. While Merlin may have provided the cure that drew the poison from my body, it was you and Valiant who found a way to triumph over hatred and distrust, the blackest poison of them all.

Rowanne:
I didn't steal your heart. You were born without one.

Prince Valiant:
Your swordsmanship, like your manners, is shoddy at best.

Robert Draconarius:
My condolences to your mother. She's about to lose a son!

Prince Valiant:
I will leave you with your life. But I cannot leave you with your sword. You have dishonored it.

Rowanne:
What a fool Robert is, thinking he could lock me in a closet with latches I fitted myself.

Prince Valiant:
Nice shooting. For a woman.

Rowanne:
Show me the man who could do better.

Arn:
There isn't one.

Robert Draconarius:
Duncan, what is Camelot? Why have I never heard of it before?

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
Because I've seen to it that no one in this shire has. My people have no use for such ideas.

Robert Draconarius:
You'll learn to love me. And, failing that, you could learn to do as my mother did: just pretend.

Robert Draconarius:
[mockingly] So, have you come to rescue the fair maiden?

[Rowanne punches him]

Prince Valiant:
I see no need. She seems to have things well in hand.

Elizabeth:
A heart never has time to say everything it wants, does it?

Prince Valiant:
Arn, I don't understand why you spend so much time worrying about being a peasant.

Arn:
You'd understand if you were one. It's a worrisome thing to be.

Rowanne:
[reading the note from her mother on the blanket] "To warm and comfort your bodies as friendship and love will warm and comfort your souls."

Prince Valiant:
Are you nervous?

Arn:
No, not nervous. Terrified.

Sir Bryant:
What's this? A most unusual way of preparing for battle, I would say.

Prince Valiant:
We prepare for a battle of a different sort, Sir Bryant.

Sir Bryant:
Then I wish you victory. But remember: we go north at dawn.

Arn:
This won't take long. It's just a, simple, friendly supper. Right, Valiant?

Prince Valiant:
That's the plan. [they grin at each other nervously]

Elizabeth:
Could it be, Rowanne, that you left King Arthur's court not because Camelot wasn't worthy of you, but because you were not worthy of it?

Cedric:
We may lose her this day.

Elizabeth:
On a path she has chosen, no one is ever truly lost.

Prince Valiant:
The journey from the marsh was an unpleasant one, Merlin. The sea was so wild. At times we feared we would never make it back.

Merlin:
The journey you had was mild to what you are about to encounter, Valiant.

Prince Valiant:
There's not much I can say to you before we embark on this voyage, except: thank you. Thank you for what you're about to do. By your sacrifice, you will bring light, where now there is only darkness. May God protect us, and guide us to victory in the name of our king, and our country.

King William:
It seems you have earned the respect of your men, my son. Nothing is more important to a man who must lead an army into battle.

King William:
A good battle won well-fought can only have one voice leading it. I firmly believe, Valiant, that you are capable of commanding this army, leading it into victory.

Prince Valiant:
But I want you you by my side. I want you there with me when Cynan is brought to his knees.

King William:
[hugging him] I will be with you, son. In heart and spirit.

Merlin:
Go below and rest.

Prince Valiant:
[patting his shoulder] In this weather? Easier said than done, Merlin.

Merlin:
It is not your courage I question, Valiant, or your selflessness. But by risking your life to save one man, you endangered hundreds more who were depending on you to lead them in battle. Remember, Valiant, a leader of men must always temper outrage with sound judgment.

Prince Valiant:
I'll remember, Merlin. But if it were to happen again, I believe I would do the same.

Merlin:
Yes. I know.

Prince Valiant:
Merlin knows many things, Arn, but he cannot know my heart. From the moment I dove from the ship, I never doubted I would return alive.

Arn:
How could you be certain, Valiant?

Prince Valiant:
Because, my friend, my destiny remains unfulfilled. The vision of Camelot I had those months ago still demands to be made real. I aim someday to sit at the Round Table. It feels as if, from the beginning it has been preordained. Almost as if... as if some unseen hand were guiding me on my quest. When Cynan took our castle and forced my family to flee, was it chance that brought us to that foul swamp that was to become our home? Or was it something more? Was I led there by fate's hand to witness this extraordinary vision of my future? There was only one may to know. There was only one way: to follow my dream, and discover where it would lead. And on that journey, whenever I doubted my quest, visions of Camelot would always reappear before me, urging me on, showing me the way like a beacon of light. And later, was it mere chance that brought me to the lair of the Viking Tor... so that he might entrust me with his message of peace to King Arthur? I knew then that it was true, that what I had seen was much more than a dream. And I was sustained until that glorious moment, when I finally set eyes on Camelot itself. And all that has happened to me since that day, all whom I have met, all that has been given to me by destiny's hand, all that I have accomplished, has led me here. Back to... back to... Thule. I'm going back to Thule.

Merlin:
As you can see the storm has passed; the seas are calm.

Prince Valiant:
I wish it were so with my heart.

Prince Valiant:
Fighting, even for what is right, is an ugly business, Merlin.

Prince Valiant:
I sail north and I find Thule. South, and there lies Camelot. But in which direction lies my future?

Merlin:
This you must do on your own, young prince. The time for dreams is past. Look within your heart to find the answers you seek.

Merlin:
To the man or woman who leads goes the glory, but, with it, the heavy burden of obligation. It can be a most lonely place.

Prince Valiant:
This flag it my hand... kept reminding me. My first obligation is not to myself, but to my family and the people of Thule who suffer under a tyrant's hand. And isn't freeing the oppressed one of the first sworn duties of any true knight, whether he is dubbed by Excalibur or not?

Merlin:
Valiant... No matter which direction your path may turn, I suspect that the road may always lead back to Camelot.

Prince Valiant:
Thank you, Merlin. Thank you.

Prince Valiant:
As citizens of Camelot, dear lady, do we not all come from some other place? What makes us better than anyone else?

Merlin:
With authority comes responsibility. And not all judgments decided by law seem fair.

Landlord:
He stole that pig right out of my pen.

Crowd member:
You were probably wallowing in it at the time. [the crowd laughs]

Rowanne:
Come on. The next village is just over that ridge. I wager I can make it there faster than you! [takes off]

Arn:
[rides up beside him] Should we let her get away with that?

Prince Valiant:
Absolutely not.

Prince Valiant:
I'm glad you're here with me, Rowanne.

Rowanne:
[stroking his cheek] I'll always be with you, Valiant. Always.

Prince Valiant:
Better cold and alive, than warm and dead.

Solandre:
The mighty Sir Bryant. Or should I call you Prince Ben-Aziz? Your father will pay dearly to get you back alive.

Sir Bryant:
He should have cut off your ugly head when he had the chance.

Solandre:
Watch your tongue, prince. Or I just might have it removed.

Sir Bryant:
I thought you'd abandoned me, Valiant.

Prince Valiant:
Never. Never as long I live.

[Sir Bryant embraces him]

Prince Valiant:
You would refuse a man a place at your table simply because of the color of his skin. Your hearts and minds are as empty as the burned-out houses in which you dwell.

Sir Bryant:
They are awaiting trial.

Sir Gawain:
After which I personally hope they hang.

Sir Bryant:
Valiant, do you realize what an honor you're sacrificing?

Prince Valiant:
Yes. But if I must choose between glory or loyalty to my friends, then I choose loyalty.

[last lines]

Sir Bryant:
Perhaps through our friendship, we can help erase the ignorance of those who fear the differences between us.

King Arthur:
Is there a better time of year, Merlin? Ever since I was a boy I have loved the spring. And the festivals and revelry that go with it...

Merlin:
Yes. And now you're a king who has trouble keeping his mind on business.

Prince Edwin:
Might I suggest you do us all a favor and in the future learn to use your sword as something more than an ornament?

Prince Valiant:
Your manner tempts me to use it now - as a skewer.

Prince Edwin:
Since arriving in Camelot I've been told there are times you can be quite impressive with a sword...

Prince Valiant:
I would like nothing better than to show you *how* impressive.

Queen Guinevere:
[laughing] It's easier to jump the walls of Camelot on horseback than to persuade my husband to dance.

Queen Guinevere:
You were a woman long before you ever thought of becoming a knight. And women are capable of far more than the male mind can imagine. Just because you wear a dress, pretty or otherwise, does not mean you cannot do anything you set your heart to. And should anyone ever try to suggest anything to the contrary, just calmly and quietly enlighten them. [points the sword she just took down at the dressmaker's dummy]

Prince Edwin:
I think she adores me.

Prince Giles:
Than you and she certainly have something in common.

Prince Edwin:
Do you know how many women back in Linden would give their lives to be my bride?

Rowanne:
Let them get to know you better; I guarantee their numbers will dwindle.

Sir Gawain:
The battle's on!

Sir Bryant:
There seems to be a bit of competition between our two young princes.

Sir Gawain:
What do you say we go somewhere less crowded?

Prince Giles:
A knight, or any man who hopes to be one, should fight only for right and honor. He should never raise a weapon simply to furnish his own glory.

Prince Edwin:
What is this? My own brother turns against me?

Prince Giles:
It is because I am your brother, and because I love you, that I tell you this. There is no honor here. If you truly do aspire to be a knight, set aside your arrogant pride. Shake Valiant's hand and walk away from this.

Sir Gawain:
All right, lads. Let's not disappoint the people. Let's make it a good show. Now, let's have at it!

Prince Edwin:
[amazed] No one has ever knocked me down.

Prince Valiant:
Get used to it.

King Arthur:
I want you two gentlemen to take a good hard look at the table before you. It has no edges or corners. Do you know why that is? Because in Camelot, no man is better than another. Any knight who aspires to this table must banish his own ego, and fight with, not against, the man who sits beside him.

Rowanne:
You look terrible.

Prince Valiant:
I feel worse.

Rowanne:
Who won? [kisses him]

[last lines]

Rowanne:
You know, Valiant, in many ways you remind me of King Arthur. When he was younger.

Arn:
Wonders are everywhere, Denys. You don't have to look far to find them.

Rowanne:
The weapon alone guarantees nothing. It is the man who handles it that gives it purpose.

Rowanne:
Is this a three-arrow contest, or shall we now make it six?

Prince Valiant:
Why isn't this animal as tired as we are?

Prince Valiant:
[they can't find Arn to cook lunch; winking] It seems *you* shall have to prepare it.

Rowanne:
Mmmm, I'll go find Arn.

Rowanne:
Of all the people in the world to suffer, Arn is least deserving.

Rowanne:
[to Valiant] Please don't let him die.

Prince Valiant:
Arn. How we will go on without you?

Denys:

Denys:

Denys:

Arn:
I believe there are more flowers in this room than in the forest.

Merlin:
[Chuckles] Since you weren't able to be in the forest, we, uh, brought a little of it to you.

Prince Valiant:
[takes what he stole] A man your age still playing with dolls? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Prince Valiant:
I have little patience for men who threaten the helpless while hiding behind masks.

Carl:
What a beautiful women my skinny pigtailed cousin's grown up to be.

Prince Valiant:
[chuckling] Oh, you'll have to tell me about those pigtails.

Rowenne:
Carl!

Prince Valiant:
I don't believe it!

Rowenne:
I think you're outnumbered.

Prince Valiant:
No one can promise you a good, happy life. You've got to *work* for it. The Luscitanes work hard, and they *are* hurting you - because you're letting them. You've grown used to an easy life. That life, for better or worse, is gone. But that doesn't mean you're beaten. The weapons you need to fight back are not knives and swords, but sweat and labor. With enough of that, you need fear no one.

Rowenne:
No good can come of hate. Out of hate comes more hate, and out of that, destruction.

[last lines]

Prince Valiant:
Mordred can never win, Rowanne. For like all things evil, his message will wither before the revealing light of truth...

Sir Bryant:

Rowanne:
Lord Maldon may wear the mask of a fool, Arn, but beneath it lurks the face of a wolf.

Lord Maldon:
Listen, and remember. It is a sound that will change an age.

Prince Valiant:
It has a sound to the voice of doom.

Merlin:
History has just turned a page that will forever change the world.

King Arthur:
Perhaps, but I have no choice but to meet it head-on.

Merlin:
Maldon has taken from the future and with what he has taken, he is more than able to destroy the present.

King Arthur:
Whatever the outcome of this battle, my love, know that I have only taken my body and mind. My heart and soul are with you.

King Arthur:
Men of Camelot, tomorrow, we go into battle to meet an enemy who has vowed to destroy us. To destroy Camelot. What does this mean, Camelot? Do we fight for the glory of it? For the land of it? For the power of it? No, my friends. We fight for something far more precious. We fight for freedom. The freedom of Camelot and of all kingdoms, and of all those who dwell within them

Lord Maldon:
It seems we are both more than we appear to be. And now, unfortunately, one of us must *cease* to be.

Eric the Unstoppable:
Your weapons are effective, Lord Maldon. But this is an impersonal butchery. It robs the battlefield of honor, and steals from the warrior his courage.

Merlin:
[preparing a weapon] Let us hope our light is stronger than Maldon's darkness.

Merlin:
Always, remember, Arthur, as long asa single pure heart survives, the dream will live.

King Arthur:
Rest well, old friend. They will not take you. That I vow.

Prince Valiant:
[to Chung] I would get out of here if I were you.

Lord Maldon:
[entering] He's not going anywhere. None of you are.

[last lines]

Prince Valiant:
Well, Merlin, at least we have seen the end of this dreadful black powder.

Merlin:
No, Valiant. I suspect it will come again. We can only pray that when it does, mankind will have learned to use its power more wisely.

King Arthur:
People of Camelot, it has been many years since I've pulled this sword from this stone. Many of those who were here that day are with us no longer. But the sword abides, and the stone endures. Just as the ideals of Camelot must endure. Today as I stand before you, stormclouds obscure the future. There are those who would seek to destroy the dream, to bring Camelot to its knees. But we must never let them. We must vow to see that Camelot survives, that the light of truth is never extinguished. That the people of this land are never again forced to live in darkness.

Allyn:
May God forgive me.

Lord Maldon:
It's too late for your pathetic prayers, Allyn.

Queen Guinevere:
I was at Arthur's side when he founded Camelot, and as he built and shaped it. It was a dream I dreamt with him. As his queen, it is my duty to see that it does not perish. And that is why I am choosing now to put the dream of Camelot where Arthur always saw it as its best. I am choosing to step aside, and to put it into the hands of the future, into the hands of one whom Arthur loved as a son, and regarded as an heir. I am choosing to abdicate, and to name as my immediate successor... Prince Valiant of Thule.

Prince Valiant:
May God grant me the wisdom, and the strength, to keep the light of Camelot safe from those who would see it extinguished.

Prince Valiant:
Nothing comes from violence except more violence.

Ellington:
[after shaking hands to approve their children's marriage] On one condition. It will be a proper wedding, with a ceremony at Castle Ellington.

Cavanaugh:
Indeed? Not if my wife has anything to say about it. [both laugh]

Cynan:
You and your father should have killed me when you had the chance at Thule.

Prince Valiant:
[lunging] I'LL HAVE ANOTHER!

Cynan:
Your blind faith in the so-called New Order was your undoing, boy. You and your king are fools to presume goodness and virtue in *all* men.

Prince Valiant:
Not all, Cynan. Not you.

Prince Valiant:
I no more trusted Dylan than I would trust a snake with two heads.

Denys:
Look around you, Father. This is what your bloodthirsty greed has achieved.

Denys:
[about to ascend the stairs when she steps out of the shadows down them] But I was just...

Glyndyn:
That is no concern of mine.

Denys:
Wh-wh-who are you?

Glyndyn:
And *that* is no concern of *yours*.

Cynan:
By my sword, Glyndyn, I'll not tolerate you going back on our bargain!

Glyndyn:
Your anger is understandable, Cynan, but the situation has become - How shall I say it? - more, complicated?

Argus:
[raises his sword] Maybe this will help you *un*complicate things, woman!

Merlin:
[toasting] A absurdum.

Glynyn:
To absurdity, indeed.

Glynyn:
What is happening? I am immune to every known toxin!

Merlin:
I was aware of that. Which is why I came here earlier today. I added the milky extract of the poinsettia lute to your concoction. It's a recent discovery of mine, I might add.

Cynan:
What a curiously ironic turn of events, Denys. All of these years I've waited for you to display some backbone. And now, when you finally do, you use it against me.

Denys:
I would use such trickery only to save lives, not destroy them!

Cynan:
So you really do believe that lunacy sprouted by your King Arthur.

Denys:
I give you my word.

Prince Valiant:
And unlike your word, Cynan, his may be trusted.

Cynan:
NO! Oh, my son! Oh, what have I done? Wait. There's still a chance. Don't worry, Dylan - I'll save you. We'll ride into Camelot side by side triumphant. I - I give you the word of Cynan of Tharough. We'll rule the world. You'll see.

[first lines]

Merlin:
[heard chuckling while someone unseen moves chess pieces until the red king knocks over the white] Man's fate. What a strange riddle it is. How few clues there are to explain the random ways in which men seem to begin and end, to live and love, to succeed and fail. Each individual destiny interweaving invisibly with the next, fashioning the beautiful and terrifying tapestries of our lives, shaping our passions and our destinies. Extractions of such strange and unexpected prices, demanding that in order for one man to flourish, another must perish.

Prince Valiant:
[sitting up in bed] FATHER!

Prince Valiant:
You and Father taught me not to careful, but to be bold.

Prince Valiant:
I must either return to you with my shield, or upon it.

King William:
The man comes without honor. What men we have will fight with hearts full of courage and truth. Those Cynan brings with him come with their souls stripped completely naked by greed.

Prince Valiant:
Come quickly! We're approaching - [the ship runs aground] Land.

Queen Briana:
So I see.

Queen Briana:
Valiant, what manner of place is this?

Prince Valiant:
Just an ordinary sort of place. [a creature attacks him; he kills it] Perhaps I was mistaken. This place, whatever it may be, is far from ordinary.

Prince Valiant:
I am a man now, Father. And now with all my heart I wish to be as good and just a man as you have always been.

King William:
Goodness, truth... these things brought me into exile and ruin.

Prince Valiant:
It doesn't always have to be so, Father.

King William:
You are taking from me more than you know, Valiant. You are taking... my very heart.

Queen Briana:
When Cynan stole our home that day, he took much more than land and a castle. He took our innocence. I wonder if I shall ever be able to trust in the goodness of the world the way I once did.

Prince Valiant:
I want no fuss. There is to be no party; that's all there is to it.

Queen Briana:
And since when, Valiant, does a prince give orders to a queen?

King William:
[laughs] Yes, it's good to be home.

Sir Gawain:
If you're going to be a hero you'd best prepare yourself for banquets and honors. They're among the most pleasurable parts of the job.

Sir Gawain:
That was a nasty fall you took, boy. How do you feel?

Prince Valiant:
Fine. Fine.

Sir Gawain:
He feels fine, but I ache in every bone. Oh, the injustice of age.

Owen:
Deal with him as you would with any other bloodthirsty animal.

Prince Valiant:
Answering violence with violence will solve nothing.

Sir Gawain:
I hate autumn. It is a wicked season. A harbinger of endings and decay. A time when fullness is past, and passions are slipping into memory. It is a stealthy hand, stealing away the heat, fading the glorious colors of summer. Leaving in their place, loneliness and heartbreak.

Queen Briana:
If Arthur is half the man you describe him to be, he knows that knighthood is your destiny. And it is time for you to fulfill that destiny.

King William:
Know that wherever you go, whatever road you follow, our love and our prayers will go with you.

Sir Bryant:
Please, lad, do not refer to me as a hero. I prefer to be regarded as what I am: a good soldier. I find the trappings of heroism to be tedious: the endless banquets and pageants and ceremony... No. I have no need of medals and speeches. My reward is that of a job well done, a fight well fought. When I have died, I do not want a laurel wreath placed upon my head. I want instead, a soldier's helmet.

Arn:
It seems as if so little time has passed. And now so much has changed.

Rowanne:
But we'll never change, Arn. You and Valiant and I... we'll always be together.

Sir Bryant:
You are about to be armed as a soldier, and a man. To be recognized as one of the bravest, and best.

Sir Gawain:
Yes, think of it, boy. You're about to join the ranks of those envied by their fellow man. And adored by every maiden who draws breath.

Sir Gawain:
Well, boy, are you ready?

Prince Valiant:
I hope so. With all my heart.

Prince Valiant:
To want to be a knight, Denys, that is a fine and noble dream. But as for battle and killing, there is little beauty to be found there. Only pain, and misery, and death.

Denys:
But, Valiant, without fighting, how do we stop the wrong?

Prince Valiant:
I wondered the same thing when the messenger brought this to me.

Denys:
It says that Sir Mordred is amassing an army, and that he may be planning to attack Camelot someday.

Prince Valiant:
Yes. And that he is gathering his army... with Owen's help.

Prince Valiant:
Something about you looks so familiar.

Gelandria:
I'm sorry to say we've never met. I surely would recall someone as handsome as you, sir.

Prince Valiant:
And your name is?

Gelandria:
Not important.

The Mighty Om:
[of Valiant's yawn] Sounds like the mating call of a yak.

Gelandria:
Aaron will kill you if he finds you here.

Prince Valiant:
If that is what my destiny demands, then so be it. I'm not leaving you here to perish.

Gelandria:
Aaron, if one knight of Camelot is willing to lay down his life in defense of his beliefs, what chance have you against a whole kingdom of such men? My husband, if you choose the road to war you will surely die. And I will weep for you. If you love me, choose the path of peace, and I promise I will return with you to our land. To help you lead our people with honor, and courage. The time has come to follow the light of Camelot, Aaron.

The Mighty Om:
Farewell, true knight. Your destiny holds more than you ever dreamed possible.

Prince Valiant:
All we need is to distract them for a moment or two. And you, Rowanne, should be able to accomplish that quite easily.

Rowanne:
Me? Why me?

Prince Valiant:
Because, this is an operation that will require both brawn *and* beauty.

King Arthur:
Achieving knighthood, like achieving true manhood, is often an arduous and lengthy task.

Queen Guinevere:
Look into their eyes. Have you ever before seen three more pure or shining souls?

Prince Valiant:
[after Gawain tripped him during the pole-axe lesson] Hello, Giles.

Prince Giles:
[chuckling] Greetings, my friend. I trust you're well, uh, under the circumstances.

Sir Gawain:
Headstrong, impetuous, tenacious... Not unlike myself.

Sir Gideon:
The Bronze Knight took my hand. He stripped me of my honor. And now long after his death he ensures it. I like that. It appeals to my knight's sense of justice.

[last lines]

Sir Gideon:
When you're older you'll understand, Valiant. When I lost my hand I became... half a man. I needed to feel strong - to be powerful again. [a knight hits his horse's rump so it takes off]

Prince Valiant:
Did you not know, Sir Gideon, that the true measure of a man lies not in his hands, but in his heart.

Prince Valiant:
[laughing] Don't you ever get tired, Denys?

Denys:
Not when I'm having this much fun.

Prince Valiant:
You're always banging yourself on something or other, aren't you?

Denys:
It toughens me up. I was born for battle.

King Donovan:
[enthusiastically] He is my son. My flesh and blood. I love him!

Prince Valiant:
Oh, I see. You show your love... by beating him?

King Donovan:
I do not beat him; I discipline him. There is a difference. He must learn to be strong. He will be king one day. My father hit me when I was a child and look what I've become. A king, beloved by my people!

Prince Valiant:
Would they love you as much if they could have seen you beating an innocent child? If they could've seen a grown man hitting a small boy hard enough, to blanken his eye?

King Donovan:
What right have you to tell me how to raise my child?

Prince Valiant:
If beating your child is such a good thing, why do you do it in secret?

Denys:
[standing and bowing] I mean no disrespect, Your Majety, but... when you beat a child, you do not teach him to be strong.

Prince Valiant:
You teach him to be afraid.

King Donovan:
My son will have to live with fear as I have. As any man does.

Prince Valiant:
Yes, Your Majesty. There are many things in this world a child must learn to fear. Bur surely, his own parents should not be among them.

King Donovan:
I love my son. He must know that.

Prince Valiant:
Well, how can he when you teach him that there's no safety in the world, not even in the arms of the people who gave him life?

Denys:
[starting to cry, causing Donovan to dry his tears] I know this to be true, Your Majesty. Because deep inside... I can still feel the pain of every time my father hit me.

King Donovan:
Pain... never goes away.

Garth:
[causing the maid to gasp] You agree to move the boundaries of your kingdom, because you are afraid to stand up to Forsythe and his addle-brained wife. Yet you dare to raise your fist to an innocent child?

[scoffs]

Garth:
Donnovan the Peacemaker! You're nothing more than a cringing coward.

[last lines]

King Donovan:
My son is the only thing in my life of which I am truly proud. He has taught me more about myself in the last few hours than I have learned in a lifetime. And there is much I have yet to learn. For I have just now begun to listen.

Prince Valiant:
Leave as soon as you are able.

Sir Bryant:
At once, Prince Valiant... uh, forgive me - Your Majesty.

Prince Valiant:
Your - Your Majesty - ?... Thank you.

Prince Valiant:
[to Gawain and Bryant] When the hour comes, we will quickly come to your aid. For Camelot will certainly perish without the two of you to lead her armies.

Lady Morgana:
If Valiant is Camelot's head, then his two strong arms and Bryant and Gawain.

Arn:
Not again. That's the third blade you've destroyed, Valiant. At this rate our army will soon be weaponless.

Arn:
They have just lost King Arthur, Valiant. They will learn to trust you but give them time.

Prince Valiant:
Mordred is forty-eight hours from our gates; that is all the time I have.

Arn:
That is all the time you need, my friend. All the Knights of the Round Table stand with you, now and always.

Prince Valiant:
I can be a good king but I cannot be Arthur. And to many people he *was* Camelot. I must convince our people that Arthur's dream was greater than any one man, and that it did not perish with him.

Merlin:
Arthur was part of me for such a long time. I miss him so.

Prince Valiant:
No more than I, Merlin. No more than I.

Prince Valiant:
Bryant. If you can hear me, I promise you, before this night is over, I shall wipe this plague from the Earth.

Soldier:
You don't think Sir Bryant's really... dying, do you?

Soldier:
Bite your tongue. Sir Bryant won't let us down.

Soldier:
How will you catch him?

Prince Valiant:
I do not know how. I only know, that I WILL!

Lady Morgana:
You may tell Mordred that thanks to me his foes are running as blind as headless chickens.

Sir Gawain:
If you so much as twitch, my guards will run you through like a porcupine.

Sir Gawain:
Do not even attempt to sway me, or I shall remove your powers of speech.

Sir Kay:
Let us drink to the knight I could have been, if Arthur had not passed me over for a certain young prince.

Sir Gawain:
Valiant? You don't deserve to stand in his shadow.

[last lines]

Prince Valiant:
And now our real challenge begins: trying to hold together the pieces of Arthur's crumbling dream. Trying to keep Camelot alive, without him.

The Mighty Om:
I'm as fit as a fiddle.

Prince Valiant:
And as fast as a hummingbird. I was showing Om to his quarters but he caught sight of you and was gone in an instant.

Arn:
I'm afraid a mouth such as mine is better suited to eating than intellectual conversation.

Merlin:
Is it worse to live a lie for the good of many, or to be truthful in order to lighten the burden on your own soul?

The Mighty Om:
To try to run from oneself, old friend, is a fool's race.

The Mighty Om:
It seems that even the wisest of men can be scared off by the pranks of a ghost.

Merlin:
It's out of my own past that he's come to haunt me.

The Mighty Om:
[to Merlin] No matter how dark a secret may be, it only has power as long as it *is* a secret. I believe it was you who first told me that.

Merlin:
The ghost which has come to Camelot is my own.

King Arthur:
As you have often told me, Merlin, there is no shame in making mistakes. The only shame is in making the *same* mistakes.

Sing Lu:
She has grown up with hatred in her heart. It is her heritage. Let it not be ours.

King Arthur:
A heart of a truly noble man has room within it to hold, along with courage and honor, the gift of forgiveness.

Rogue Knight:
You have fought so well that I almost hate to kill you.

Rolf:
[his last lines] Valiant, you must know that your father loves you. He loves you as much as I always have.

King William:
[to Valiant of the horse] He is much like you: born a beater, headstrong, full of fire and spirit.

[last lines]

Prince Valiant:
I shall call you Caliburn, after the king's own sword. And together we shall honor Rolf's spirit, and that of my father.

King Arthur:
Besides, a trip to the wall should give some of the younger troops some valuable training. Don't you think?

Sir Gawain:
[sighing] Perhaps. And take twenty years of my life in the process.

Arn:
[of chess] You really have a knack for this game, Valiant. Maybe you really are meant to lead armies.

Sir Gawain:
We are off to save Camelot from the overwrought imagination of Julian the Feeble-minded.

Sir Gawain:

Sir Gawain:
Well, you old swill-bucket, aren't you going to invite us in?

Prince Valiant:
[the guard reaches the lock on the cell Julian was said to be in] I see no need to open the door. It seems he's already let *himself* out.

Soldier:
[an arrow is fired] Whoever done this, prepare to die.

Sir Gawain:
If I'd known I'd be attending a funeral, I'd have worn my shiniest suit of armor.

Prince Valiant:
[fighting off a pair of soldiers] It's been nice dancing with you, but I've got some work to do.

Sir Gawain:
I underestimated a fool, and ended up making a fool of *myself*.

Prince Valiant:
I guess you're never too old to learn something new about yourself.

Sir Gawain:
A lot of the older knights are starting to settle down now, raising families and...

Prince Valiant:
Are you thinking of getting married and raising children?

Sir Gawain:

[pounces on Valiant with a yell, causing Arn and Rowanne to laugh] Do you yield?

Prince Valiant:
[laughing] I yield, I yield. I know when I'm beaten.

Sir Gawain:
And what manner of knave has the young Prince Valiant bested today?

Denys:
Oh, no, Sir Gawain. I'm not pretending I am Valiant. I'm an even mightier warrior today.

Prince Valiant:
Oh. Then you must be King Arthur.

Raymond of Longport:
I don't need friends.

Parrot:
[after Raymond flips the tableful of food at its owner] Awk, missed.

Prince Valiant:
Put your hands around my neck and hold on as if you were as brave as King Arthur himself.

Raymond of Longport:
These... these people don't know who I am.

Prince Valiant:
But they know *what* you are. Perhaps that's something you yourself will learn in time.

Prince Valiant:
The trees have... they've all died.

Merlin:
No, look closely, here, and here.

Sir Gawain:
And will these new shoots grow to be as big as this?

Merlin:
Mm, too soon to tell. We can give them everything they need to grow strong and tall, but then the rest is up to them.

Arn:
[of confessing to stealing, referring to what Valiant did earlier] I'd say that takes as much courage as jumping onto a burning building.

Prince Valiant:
I'd say it takes more.

[last lines]

Sir Gawain:
[Valiant and Rowanne arrive carrying Denys on their shoulders, with Arn] And what great hero do we have here today?

Prince Valiant:
One of the greatest of them all. Denys of Camelot.

Prince Valiant:
King Arthur is dead and I've been chosen to rule Camelot. But will fate grant me the wisdom, and the warriors enough to save our dream?

Merlin:
No war can be won by a kingdom's army alone. It must be won with the hearts and minds of the people as well.

Prince Valiant:
Let us hope that the dream that lives in the hearts of us all can unite us in our darkest hour.

Merlin:
[to the falcon] Go, my friend. Watch what is transpiring in the world. Be the eyes of Camelot.

Sir Gawain:
Come on. Let's count how many heads we'll have to break when the fighting starts.

Lord Maldon:
Camelot's most cherished symbol should serve to hasten her defeat.

Arn:
Mordred may have more soldiers on his side, but we have the truth on ours.

Prince Valiant:
I wonder if when the carnage is over there will still *be* a Camelot.

Rowenne:
[touching his shoulder] It wasn't so long ago that Arn and I followed you, not even knowing if there *was* such a place as Camelot.

Arn:
A strange journey, we have shared, the three of us.

Prince Valiant:
We can only hope that, this is not the end of it.

Prince Valiant:
Sometimes it seems that-that, that all we have left is hope.

Rowenne:
[kissing him] Whatever the outcome, Valiant, Arn and I will fight to the death to keep Camelot alive.

Sir Bryant:
Gawain, what are you doing? You are signing your own death warrant.

Sir Gawain:
We have fought side-by-side for twenty years. And I have always known that you were the brains, and I was the brawn. If Camelot is to lose one of us, it shan't be you.

Sir Bryant:
Gawain...

[the soldiers come in and restrain Gawain and drag Bryant out]

Sir Bryant:
Fight, my brother. With all that you have. Camelot, needs you.

Queen Guinevere:
Death is not my intention, though I would gladly risk it for Camelot.

Soldier:
Help her, and Queen Aleta dies.

Queen Guinevere:
It's true: if you help, Aleta may die. But would she want to live at the price of a life of slavery for her people? Is this what you want for your children and for *their* children?

Denys:
You are the people of Camelot - of King Arthur and the New Order. You know better than this. You know what is right and you are letting it go away without a fight! You're cowards, all of you! You're letting them destroy our dream! Why? WHYYY?

Prince Valiant:
Mordred inside the castle? Sitting on King Arthur's throne? It would be like having the Devil himself entering the gates of Heaven. It cannot be! If I have to die, I will gladly do so to ensure that it does not happen, now, or ever.

Queen Guinevere:
Please continue, Maldon. Give me one good reason to kill you here and now.

King Arthur:
Gwen?

Queen Guinevere:
Is it true? Are you really here? Please don't let me be dreaming.

King Arthur:
[hugging her] You're not dreaming, Gwen. The nightmare is over.

[last lines]

King Arthur:
[raising his sword and causing Valiant to do the the same then crossing them with Arn's and Rowanne's] Now is the time for celebration. We have won a great victory this day. But when the glow has faded, we must remember the cost, and we must be forever vigilant. The message of hate that Mordred spread will come with a different name, a different face. But as long as we keep the ideals of Camelot alive in our hearts, we will prevail. Long live honor, and justice. Long live goodness, and truth. Long live Camelot!

Arn:
[laughs] You're supposed to go after them with something besides your bare hands. Otherwise they wouldn't have bothered to call it fishing. They'd have just called in grabbing.

Arn:
Yes. And when you've not eaten in three days, they call it starving.

Prince Valiant:
[laughs] I am thankful that you have more agility with a fishing-net than you seem to have with your feet.

Prince Valiant:
I shall need to know how to feed myself on what may prove to be a long journey.

Arn:
[smiles as he sees Valiant's net catch on a rock and the fish jump nearby] If I were you I should pray that my quest not be a lengthy one.

Prince Valiant:
It is my constant prayer. But, should it take all my days to reach Camelot, I would gladly give every one of them, and more.

Arn:
To find a place called Camelot? What could possibly be there that would be worth your life?

Prince Valiant:
I am not seeking a village. I am seeking the New Order of the world. The triumph of justice and reason over ignorance and brutality. I am seeking my destiny. To be a knight of the Round Table.

Arn:
They're no place for a prince. Not even one as brave and as clever as you.

Prince Valiant:
I shall not be alone. I will be with the Knights of the Round Table. And with the others who come to Camelot. Men of honor and courage. Men who are not afraid to fight for what is right and true. They will be men who are loyal and kind. Men such as you, Arn.

Arn:
What have I to offer to a dream such as yours - a dream as fine as Camelot?

Prince Valiant:
Arn, it is only in hearts as pure and good as yours that such dreams dwell.

Prince Valiant:
It showed the dream destroyed. Think, Arn. For a thing to be destroyed, it must first exist. The nightmare showed me that Camelot is real. It exists! And once I have found it, I will dedicate myself to preventing its destruction.

Prince Valiant:
We shall listen to our hearts. And somehow, we shall know.

Rowanne:
Just and fair monarchs tend to live longer than the others.

Arn:
Then King Arthur is destined to rule the longest of them all.

Prince Valiant:
I've known Rowanne and Arn less than two years, and our friendship feels so strong already. I can scarcely imagine it any stronger.

Queen Guinevere:
You must always be open to learn from the past, to improve the future.

Queen Guinevere:
[crying] I entrust you to do what is necessary to ensure that justice is ensured.

Lady Glenelen:
You'll not be able to stop both of us with a single arrow.

Rowanne:

Mordred's Soldier:

Sir Mordred:

Merlin:
Sometimes, it is on the winds of change that we hear life's sweetest melodies.

Prince Valiant:
Your boundless supply of energy is beginning to wear me down. Let's call a truce.

Arn:
No, I'm enjoying myself too much. Let's try that maneuver again.

Prince Valiant:
All right. Let's see how quickly I can finish you off this time.

Arn:
[after sparring with Valiant] Without refreshment, I will not remain a worthy opponent for your merciless flogging.

John Brodditch:
Of all the horses in my father's stable, I had to steal a blind one.

John Brodditch:
You don't understand. My father thinks I'm a spendthrift and a dolt. He's cut me off without a penny. You're my only hope; I'm desperate.

Rowanne:
Did it ever occur to you to get a job, to work for your money?

John Brodditch:

Rowanne:
You couldn't find a herd of cows in a locked barn.

Rowanne:
Knowing what I know of you, I feel more comfortable fleeing from my honor than having you defend it. So I suggest we find your horse and discuss your manly powers at another time.

John Brodditch:

Garth:

Sir Gawain:
Cheer up, lads. In Camelot a man is given fair trial for his crimes. Even the likes of *you*!

Prince Valiant:
He was a great man, he was my mentor. It was he who taught me to use not only my sword but my wits as well. He was the most brilliant soldier I ever saw on the field of battle. He was... but he is no more.

Sir Gawain:
Watch your balance, lads. You're aspiring to be knights, not court jesters.

Merlin:
It is a sad thing when time robs a man of his quickness and his edge.

Lorn:

Prince Valiant:

I feared for a long time that the day would come when I would no longer be useful, that my nerve would fail me. It is I who failed you, Valiant. And for that, I am deeply sorry.

Prince Valiant:
[hugging him] To me, you will be always be the man who saved Thule many, many times over.

Lead mercenary:
I don't think they soil themselves by fighting.

Prince Valiant:
You're welcome to test that theory at your convenience.

Lead mercenary:
Camelot will be a fat ransom for your hides.

Prince Valiant:
Well, if gold is what you want, help yourselves.

[flings the bag of it forward so they're distracted and seize it]

Prince Valiant:
It is a pity your swordfight does not equal your bravado, my boastful friend.

Merlin:
Your troops are waiting for you outside the gate. You'll do well, Valiant. They're a fine group of soldiers and have been picked by Sir Gawain and Sir Bryant.

Prince Valiant:
I will do well, because I have been taught well.

[embraces him]

Owen:
My lofty ideals died when Cynan slaughtered my wife and son.

Prince Valiant:
Cynan is a man without honor. That's no reason for you to become one too.

Owen:
If there was any honor in the world, Your Highness, Cynan would have his head on the block, not be awaiting a trial in your father's castle.

Rowenne:
Tell me, do knights do their best work while starving to death, Sir Valiant?

Prince Valiant:
I don't feel very noble at the moment. "Sir Valiant". How my knighthood seems to mock me.

Prince Valiant:
I do not wish to exhaust your patience, but to call upon your honor.

Prince Valiant:
Whatever fate holds for us, my friends, we'll meet it with courage. And continue in our quest to make the world a better place.

Queen Guinevere:

King Arthur:
I find the reality of Camelot far heavier than the dream of it I carried as a young man.

King Arthur:
Be seated, gentlemen. This is not a time for formality, but a time for straightforward talk among trusted friends.

Prince Valiant:
That's not possible.

King Arthur:
Nevertheless, it's true.

Sir Morgan:
Peace through strength. That is Mordred's way, the way of the New Dawn. The only way this kingdom or any other can hope to survive.

Sir Morgan:
The Romans once bathed here. I find it somehow fitting that the new empire should be born upon the ruins of the old.

Sir Morgan:
You must be mad!

Sir Morgan:
One of us certainly is.

Princess Aleta:
It takes more strength for a man to sit and talk with his enemy than it does to raise a sword and strike him down.

Sir Gawain:
Pardon me, gentlemen, but may I play too?

Princess Aleta:
No matter where I go, you will always be with me, Valiant. Always.

King Arthur:
I never thought Hugo would surrender his kingdom before asking for my help; the man detests me.

Sir Bryant:
How so, my lord?

King Arthur:
When I first became king, he raised an army and attempted to take my throne. He failed. As punishment, I banished him to the Misty Isles.

Sir Gawain:
And now he has the impudence to come begging for your help!

King Arthur:
Yes, and I intend to grant it.

King Arthur:
Sometimes the most valuable alliances a king can form are with those who were once enemies.

Prince Valiant:
I've never seen a creature so foul!

Arn:
Or smelled one!

Rowanne:
[sarcastically] Lovely country, isn't it?

Prince Valiant:
Reminds me of a place I once called home.

Princess Aleta:
So you have a tongue after all. I think I liked it better when you were a mute.

Princess Aleta:
You cannot doom this kingdom simply because of your own blind hate. Let go of the past, Father. Let go before it dooms us all.

[last lines]

Arn:
We won.

Rowanne:
[looking at Aleta waving good-bye to Valiant] We may have won the battle, Arn, but I fear a war has begun. One which cannot be stopped with the sword.

Sir Gawain:
[laughs at the knights' considering the existence of the Night People] Have no fear, fair maidens. Sir Gawain will protect you.

Sir Gawain:
[to the knights] Stay alert, ladies.

King Arthur:
He thinks by running away he can leave the hurt behind. But he can only take it with him.

Queen Guinevere:
Young love. We do forget how joyfully it's found, and how painfully it's lost.

Rowanne:
I've come to speak with you. About Valiant.

Princess Aleta:
What is there to say?

Rowanne:
Only that if you must blame someone for the wrong done to you, blame me, not him. You can't imagine how much you're hurting him - how much it hurts to be turned away by someone you care about.

Princess Aleta:
He loves me?

Rowanne:
Very much so.

Rowanne:
Please don't hurt him anymore than I already have. He... loves you, Aleta.

Prince Valiant:
I can't stay here, not under the same roof as you. You were my friend. And you betreayed that friendship, Rowanne.

Sir Gawain:
[in the cell] Valiant. Nice of you to drop in. I do appreciate the company.

Prince Valiant:

Sir Gawain:
Home to some of the nastiest brutes you'll ever have the misfortune to meet, my boy.

Merlin:
Time is the great healer.

Princess Aleta:
I'm much more than a pampered princess. And if you think such, then you're nothing more than a buffoon.

Rowanne:
You can go after them, but I'm going after Valiant.

Princess Aleta:
Good. I'll be grateful for the company.

Sir Gawain:
Ah. I see you're to be dessert. Congratulations, Valiant.

Sir Gawain:
I hope they choke on me.

Sir Gawain:
Ah, there's nothing like sitting around a friendly inn swapping a few stories to bring a smile to a man's face. I suspect it's one of the things I'm going to miss the most.

Prince Valiant:
[the cannibals make their grunting noises when Rowanne attacks with Aleta] I'm sorry. I simply cannot allow you to speak to my friends that way.

Sir Gawain:
Not only do you fight well, but you look quite good doing it.

Princess Aleta:
I'm spoken for.

Sir Gawain:
Pity.

Prince Valiant:
[running from the creatures] After you.

Sir Gawain:

Prince Valiant:
I thought I would never see you again.

Princess Aleta:
I thought the same thing about you. And I knew I could never bear the pain of it.

Rowanne:
[reading his letter]... And dream of the day that we are all in the service of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Arn:

Kay:
Sttand and raise your tankards, gentlemen!

[many stand, including Valiant]

Kay:
Not you, Commander. It is you we honor.

Prince Valiant:
Are there *any* secrets you don't know?

Merlin:
A few.

Prince Valiant:
[after disarming an attacker on the log bridge] Here - let me help you. And off we go. [shoves him over]

Arn:
Sometimes I feel as if I've become your shadow, Valiant. I need to find out where it is in the world that I fit.

Prince Valiant:
To me, Arn, you've never been a shadow. You've been my friend. My brother. I will always love you.

Rowanne:
I'll miss you, Arn. I'll miss you very much.

Arn:
Rowanne, I...

Rowanne:
[wipes her eyes] I know. [kisses him]

Prince Valiant:
The trail ends here. From here, we make our own.

Rowanne:
[sarcastically, of the marsh] What a lovely place.

Prince Valiant:

Rolf is dead, Father.

King William:
Somewhere deep in my soul, I knew. And I knew that if he had as much as a single breath left in him he would find his way back to us.

Prince Valiant:
He died saving my life.

King William:
I see. When next we meet, I shall make it a point to thank him, for both of us.

Queen Briana:
When a father realizes that he is no longer taller than his son, it is a time of great pride, and great pain.

King William:
There is no need for flattery, Valiant. But it is welcome flattery nonetheless.

King William:
Perhaps if I try very hard, I can force myself to leave this "lovely" place. Convincing your mother, however, may be quite another story. You know, she has grown quite fond of sleeping on straw and decorating with moss. [laughs with Valiant]

Arn:
I wouldn't let you lord over my pigsty.

Arn:
What's that smell? Have we been invaded by a herd of human goats?

Arn:
I've been left with a choice: to command an army of loyal peasants, or fight at the side of one who will someday be the greatest knight in all of Camelot. Somehow the choice seemed clear. This is where I belong. Where I want to stay. At your side, Valiant. If, you will have me.

Prince Valiant:
[touching his shoulder] Always, my friend. Always.

Merlin:
It is true, Arthur, that a storm brings winds that can destroy a house. But it is also true that a storm brings the rain which feeds the crops. Life brings us both good and ill, and often it's difficult ot distinguish between them.

King Arthur:
Why do I get the feeling that I am being lectured, Merlin?

Merlin:
[chuckles and looks at the chessboard] It is *your* move, Sire.

King Arthur:
[looks at the almost-empty hourglass] The knights will be gathering and time is running short. I'm afraid the game will have to wait.

Arn:
I know I'm going to be nervous, standing in front of all those people *and* King Arthur.

Rowanne:
I'd be nervous, too, Arn, especially if my sword looked as bad as yours does.

Arn:
I wish you could join us.

Rowanne:
In time, perhaps. But you have earned your place here, Arn. And I am so proud of you.

[embraces and kisses him before exiting]

Prince Valiant:
[touches his shoulder] Don't worry, Arn. There's room for many more at this table.

Rowanne:
[hearing the other knights cheering him through the door] Well done, my friend. Well done.

Rowanne:
If war does begin, who will we choose to fight for - Northland, or Grafton?

Prince Valiant:
I don't know, Rowanne. I truly don't know.

Rowanne:
Then let us hope that this bird flies like the wind. For if I have to choose again between King Arthur and Michael, then I know what my choice must be. And that Michael will never forgive me. Never.

Arn:
If we separate now, we might never see each other again.

Rowanne:
[hugs him] We *will* see each other again, Arn. I know that.

Arn:

Who besides me is truly clever enough to destroy Camelot?

I've been planning this ever since the last time you interfered with me. [strikes Rowanne] And believe me, that *was* the last time.

Guard:
This girl's got a reputation as a troublemaker.

Rowanne:
[the other guard walking ahead laughs then is knocked over by Rowanne whom it's revealed got the other] And it's a reputation I'm very proud of.

King Michael:
I can't send soldiers to their deaths knowing the battle I send them into may be founded on nothing more than a miscommunication.

King Michael:
My heart tells me that I can stake the welfare of this kingdom on the word of Rowanne. Just as she has been willing to risk her life in coming here, in order to keep the dream of Camelot alive for us all.

King Michael:
You have been so eager to have me follow you in the cause of war. Now I command you to follow me in the cause of peace.

Arn:
If it is death we are to face, Valiant, I am proud to face it at your side.

King Michael:
[looking to Rowanne] Though Arthur is the one who first directed our path to peace, we should not forget the one personally responsible for what has been achieved today. The one who kept not only us, but Camelot itself safe from the ravages of war.

Prince Valiant:
It's time, Rowanne. Arn's going to need his sword back. And, bring your own as well.

Rowanne:
Why do I need *my* sword? Arn's the one being knighted.

King Arthur:
[cut to the ceremony] Arn of Warringham, kneel before this sword, Excalibur. For your courage in adversity, for your devotion to justice, for your commitment to help those who cannot help themselves, I dub thee Sir Arn of Camelot, Knight of the Round Table. Arise, Sir Arn. And now, history is to be made in Camelot this day. Rowanne of Bridgeford, kneel before Excalibur. For your courage in adversity, for your devotion to justice, for your ability of making others, even your king, see the world in new ways, I... Gwen, what do I do; I can't call her "Sir" Rowanne.

[Guinevere whispers something to him]

King Arthur:
I dub thee Rowanne of Camelot, Knight of the Round Table.

Rowanne:
Dreams are what give our lives meaning.

Sir Gawain:
Rowanne, at times you can be most difficult.

Prince Valiant:
That's all any of us started with.

Queen Guinevere:

King Arthur:

True. But the man I was when I committed that crime would have murdered deliberately if he'd felt the need. Oh, Guinevere, I've been such a fool for so many years.

[being pursued where he stands on a crumbling stone ledge] Whatever happens, Valiant, I shall probably never leave Kengarry alive. I have nothing to regret and certainly nothing to lose. On the other hand, you, my young friend, Have a full life ahead of you. I suggest you reconsider you actions.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
You're the one with the sword.

Prince Valiant:
You would be wise to remember that.

Prince Valiant:
What's wrong? No taste for the fruit of the seeds you planted?

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
This has to be attended to.

Prince Valiant:
No. We must continue on.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
You're burning with fever. You'll never make it.

Prince Valiant:
We... continue... on. [faints]

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
I'm afraid you're not going anywhere, my young prince.

Prince Valiant:
You could have escaped, Duncan. Why did you come back?

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
I might have escaped *you*, Valiant. But I could never escape the memory of what I saw in that cottage. [of the handcuffs] These will bind my wrists. But not as strongly as the chains of remorse which bind my heart.

Prince Valiant:
I too lost my birthright, Duncan. But I've learned to make the best of it. To do otherwise would allow bitterness and hatred to consume me.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
[disguised as monks] Valiant, you're mad. We can't just walk in there.

Prince Valiant:
Brother Duncan, you are a man of little faith.

Tread carefully, Duncan. Every man in this camp would like nothing better than to kill you.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
How reassuring.

King Ian:
My people thought I was a hero. And I too believed it was so. Then Derrick died. He was the one who held this realm together. Without him, no matter what I have tried, everything has fallen to pieces.

Malcolm Monroe:
If I die, know that another Monroe will be back, Ian! Sword in hand!

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
And should King Ian dies, another Coghane will just rise up again in his place.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
I freely admit to killing Derrick of the Monroes. I also tell you that his death an accident. But if it will bring peace to this kingdom, I surrender myself to you. To... death, if necessary. I do this because I no longer believe in violence and rule by the sword. I do it because it is right, and because I believe in the New Order. The way of King Arthur and Camelot. It is time for the fighting to stop, is it not?

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
After ripping this kingdom apart, the least I can do is spend my days working to keep it whole. And perhaps helping to bring it closer to Camelot.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
[shaking his hand] I'm going to miss you, Valiant.

Prince Valiant:
This is a good thing. You have been given a new life, Duncan.

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
Yes. And I shall make the best of it.

Prince Valiant:

Millicante:
He's so busy that he only has time to talk about you from morning 'til night.

Prince Valiant:
Your only power is the reign of ignorance of others.

Prince Valiant:
Fighting for what you believe in is more important than the honor and glory that it may bring. Fighting for what you feel inside, for what is right and true, that's what Camelot is all about. That's what I've come to realize.

Someday, Merlin, I'm going to ask you how that falcon happened to fly out of the air channel just when it did.

Merlin:
Someday, I just might tell you.

Queen Guinevere:
It's difficult to imagine a woman agile enough to wrestle a wedding ring onto Gawain's finger.

Julianna:
At Perilous Garde, a woman's only duty is to be lovely, to act as an inspiration for the men.

Rowanne:
Well, if it's inspiration they want, far be it from me to disappoint them.

Marcus:
My dear departed wife, God rest her soul, may be seeing me sooner than she planned.

Lady Ilene:
[pleading] Do something to fix all of this.

Sir Gawain:
Gladly, my dear.

[throws her into the reservoir]

Prince Valiant:
Sir Gawain!

Sir Gawain:
I like the sound of that. I'd almost forgotten my true calling, as a knight of the Round Table.

Lady Ilene:
Without all that water Perilous Garde will never be perfect anymore.

Sir Gawain:
It never was perfect, Ilene. It was nothing but a beautiful illusion covering an ugly reality.

Prince Valiant:
Merlin can be as unpredictable as the wind.

Prince Valiant:
I fight for the greatest reason of all. For life! For hope! And for freedom! For Camelot!

Merlin:
Man cannot predict the future, Valiant. He can only prepare for it... and, pray, that there are always men and women with the courage to take the risks so that what is right prevails. When the day comes, Arthur, that Camelot should need a new king...

King Arthur:
Yes, Merlin. Camelot could do no better than to be led by the likes of Prince Valiant.

Merlin:
The strength of a people united is greater than the power of any evil.

Merlin:
Take your light into the darkness of Bridgeford, young prince. And show them the way to Camelot.

Robert Draconarius:
[in her cell] Consent to becoming my wife, and I will find you more... comfortable quarters. A place, perhaps, we both can share.

Rowanne:
What difference does it make? Either way, I'd be sleeping with a rat.

Cedric:
I say we've endured enough. I say the time has come for us to stand against the baron.

Peasant:
Easy enough for you to say. The baron holds your daughter. What are the rest of us to gain?

Prince Valiant:
Only your dignity, and your freedom!

Baron Duncan Draconarius:
I see you have some skill. At least the rabble will be entertained before you die.

Prince Valiant:
You won't slay me with your tongue, baron. Have you come to talk, or fight?

Robert Draconarius:
Treachery!

Cedric:
[holding him at swordpoint] Against treachery!

King Arthur:
Whatever this new light is, old friend, we must see that it continues to shine. [heads off]

Merlin:
Well done, young Valiant. Well done.

Robber:
We want your gold!

Prince Valiant:
[from behind] I think not.

Robber:
Whoever you are, it's time to think again!

Arn:
Please take care of the Singing Sword, until a knight as worthy as Valiant... can be found to wield it.

Brother John:
[at the monastery door to the monk who opens its window to his knock] Let me in, Paul. [is revealed to be held at swordpoint while the door is unbarred] And please forgive me.

Merlin:
Sleep for now. But remember there is still much to be done before Camelot is secure, and true rest can be yours.

Arn:
People of Sandfield, I too was born a peasant. But in Camelot I have learned that the worth of a man is not measured by the amount of gold in his pocket. It is measured by the depth of courage in his heart. It is a lesson that has taken me a long time to learn. I dreamed of becoming a knight - a dream I thought was unattainable. But I realized the power of a dream exists in the believing. As long as you hold the ideas of Camelot in your hearts, you are as worthy as King Arthur himself. And we must work together, to ensure that those ideals are instilled in the hearts of everyone!

Brother Thomas:
You spoke those words with the conviction of a true believer.

Arn:
For the first time I truly understand the real meanings of those words for myself.

Arn:
ARE YOU READY?

Crowd:
For King Arthur, and Camelot!

Brother Thomas:
[offering him the Singing Sword as the cheering continues] And for Prince Valiant.

Arn:
[takes it] For Prince Valiant, and for what is right!

Arn:
I've been trained by King Arthur. I've been taught by Merlin. And I have fought side-by-side with Prince Valiant. With this knowledge, and God's help, we shall succeed.

Arn:
Your threats are as hollow as your heart.

Arn:
To let you die would be to make myself a murderer. I am not the one to judge you. Camelot's court will do that.

Arn:
Valiant. Your sword. It sang for me.

Prince Valiant:
Arn of Wirringham, I command you to kneel before this sword. And with it, I call you to service as a Knight of the Round Table. Arise, Sir Arn of Camelot.

Rowanne:
Can you do that?

Prince Valiant:
On the field of battle, I can.

[last lines]

Arn:
[embracing him] You were the one who first gave me the dream of knighthood. And now you have helped make it come true. Thank you, Valiant.

Prince Valiant:
Together, Arn, we'll help keep the dream of Camelot alive.

Queen Guinevere:
Mm, he must love her very deeply.

King Arthur:
Yes, maybe even as deeply as I love you, Gwen.

Queen Guinevere:
Oh...

[they kiss]

Prince Valiant:
Enough of hiding behind the fact that you were a born a peasant. We've all let you get away with that for too long.

Prince Valiant:
Maybe I don't know what it means to be to be a peasant. But I do know that true courage is found dwelling in a man's heart. Not swimming around at the bottom of a wine goblet.

Aramis:
[of the deer] We can pick him up on the other side of the ridge.

King Arthur:
No, he's bested his enemies. He deserves to live another day.

Aramis:
You know, Arthur, I hate to admit it but I'm beginning to like you.

Alyssa:
I can hunt, and fight if necessary.

Rowanne:
I think I'm going to like it here.

King Arthur:
He saved my life. Now we must prepare to fight to save something far more important.

Queen Guinevere:
The Dark Man. It's not you, it's Camelot he wants. Isn't it, Arthur?

King Arthur:
Yes, Gwen, I fear it is. But I know we shall triumph. For we have not only truth on our side, but the strength and promise of the future.

Queen Guinevere:
Ten years have passed since our wedding day; I can hardly believe it. I still remember it as if it were yesterday, the garters and the parties and the music...

King Arthur:
What I can still remember is your father's face. Horrified at the idea of you marrying a penniless young upstart with nothing more to offer than a dream called Camelot.

Queen Guinevere:
[laughs] It's true. Father couldn't stand you; he found you quite impossible.

King Arthur:
Oh, I probably was. But you've got to admit I've improved since the days of my arrogant youth. Thanks to you. All that I've become, Gwen, all that I've accomplished, is because of you.

Merlin:
There is no greater challenge for a man than trying to read the mysteries of a woman's heart.

Rowanne:
It's all so lovely. What a wonderful place for a honeymoon.

Arn:
[entering] You're planning a honeymoon, Rowanne?

Rowanne:
[amused] No, Arn. Not *my* honeymoon.

Arn:
Oh. Good.

King Arthur:
We have spent the best part of a decade building the New Order, Gwen. It may be time to turn our attention to the creation of a new generation. One which will continue to build the dream of Camelot after we're gone.

King Arthur:
Think carefully about what you're doing, Stefan. This is treason.

Stefan of Albans:
Oh, I've been thinking, dear Arthur. About a king who demands that his barons regard the peasant vermin under their feet as equals. Since you love equality so much I shall let you test its bite. Death is the great equalizer, is it not?

Merlin:
What has become of the king's attackers?

Sir Bryant:
Either dead or driven off. But at a price Camelot cannot afford to pay.

Merlin:
Guinevere oversees the placement of art and objects of beauty within the kingdom. I suggest you deliver the baby to her. After all, have you ever seen a more delicate or beautiful work of art?

King Arthur:
It didn't turn out to be the quiet anniversary we hoped for, did it, Gwen?

Queen Guinevere:
[amused] My marriage to you has never been quiet, Arthur.

Prince Valiant:
It's simple, Gawain. You'll divert his attention, and I'll throw the rope around his neck.

Sir Gawain:
I'm in no mood for this sport, Valiant. Forget trying to get him back into his pen. I say we shoot him where he stands, pay the farmer for the damages, and be done with it.

[the bull charges him, he leaps onto the fence-post]

Prince Valiant:
[laughs readying the lasso] Brillaint diversion, Sir Knight.

Sir Gawain:
The next time you feel the urge to wrestle a runaway rampaging bovine, Valiant, please feel free to count me out.

Sir Gawain:
Speaking for myself, Merlin...

Prince Valiant:
We appreciate that, Gawain.

Merlin:
Remember, Arthur, the hunter that waits in silence often has a fuller belly than one who trumpets his arrival.

Sir Kay:
[handling the ship's till] Come on, you blasted sow.

Sir Gawain:
Well, it could've been worse. At least we're alive. [sits up seeing the Vikings] For now.

Prince Valiant:
Your Majesty, this is someone who would not be allowed to keep King Arthur's stable, let alone sign a treaty in his name.

Sir Mordred:
I look forward to seeing you again soon, Valiant. In Camelot.

Prince Valiant:
Yes. I suppose that will be unavoidable.

Sir Mordred:
Camelot will be my anvil, and you will be my hammer in the north.

King Arthur:
What would you have me do? Punish all immigrants for the crimes of a few?

Allyn:
Exactly that. Run them all off. Send 'em back where they came from. Nothing less.

Merlin:
Now go and get some rest. I fear that soon there will be little time for it.

King Arthur:
Ironic, isn't it? Just when we're close to achieving peace with our greatest enemy it seems that Camelot is beginning to splinter from within.

Prince Valiant:
Your powers are truly wondrous.

Merlin:
They are merely powers of observation, Valiant.

[last lines]

King Arthur:
I believe your king is in check, Merlin.

Crassus:
She's got a loose bolt in her armor.

Sir Bryant:
It was a lifetime ago. The man I was then no longer exists. For the passion that burned within me... lies buried here. With my beautiful Jasmine.

Sir Bryant:
I had so much, but lacked the wisdom to appreciate it.

Sir Bryant:
Throughout that wretched night I prayed for the Angel of Death.

Sir Bryant:
[crying as Adam's Oak burns] Oh, Jasmine, forgive me. I have failed you again.

Rowenne:
Vesta says that the branches of Adam's Oak touch the sky, and brush the wings of angels.

Sir Bryant:
Perhaps... the angels heard my prayer.

Crassus:
You can't make a livelihood on sentiment.

Prince Valiant:
True, but you can't live a truly meaningful life *without* it.

Sir Bryant:
A source of strength. A magnificent living monument leaving lessons of the past, to the hope of the future.

Cynan:
The dream is over. And now the nightmare begins.

Rathburn:
Your father forbids this fight, my lord. His plan...

Dylan:
Is to hold up in his fortress, ugh! The strategy of a turtle. I prefer to waste no time in killing *my* enemies.

Dylan:
This beach will the the only part of Thule Valiant ever reclaims. I intend to make it his grave.

King Willem:
I would gladly give my life to see his end.

Cynan:
And is that true for the lives of your men as well?

Cynan:
You are truly a fool, Willem.

King Willem:
And you are a pig.

Cynan:
[slaps his face] We'll see how well you wear your defiance in the dungeon.

Cynan:
[laughs] Young fool. You cannot really believe all that rot about knightly honor and chivalry. A lifetime in my dungeon cell will give you a more realistic view of things.

Rathburn:
[dueling Rowanne] What sort of pathetic army allows a wench in its ranks?

Rowenne:
[disarming him] One which values the skills of a good soldier.

Rathburn:
Madame, I stand corrected.

King Willem:
[of Cynan and Dylan] My son, it seems we have vermin in our tunnels.

Prince Valiant:
Well, then, let's clear them out.

King Willem:
I will not soil honorable steel with the blood of a swine. Cynan, we will settle this with the weapons God gave us.

Owen:
[whipping Cynan who is pulling his cart] Come along, now. We've a lot of trips to make today. Lots of stolen booty to return to its rightful owners.

Prince Valiant:
Come, Father. Sit in your throne.

King Willem:
You have won this day, Valiant. It is rightfully yours.

Prince Valiant:
I could never sit as tall in it as you, Father.

King Willem:
Someday you will have to.

Prince Valiant:
Yes. But until that day, my destiny lies elsewhere. Camelot, in knighthood, at the Round Table. For now, and I pray that for years to come, I will remain the prince, and you will rule this kingdom.

[Two soldiers bring Willem before Cynan and Rathburn on the remparts]

Cynan:
[to Willem] I thought you might like the morning air. Have you noticed the beach?

Rathburn:
Lovely, isn't it? Now that no army spoils the view. [Willem notices the beach is deserted]

King Willem:
[upset] No...

Rathburn:
And to think, but for your little adventure, you might have won.

Cynan:
Enjoy your last look at Thule, Willem. My dungeons' walls will be your new horizons.

Prince Valiant:
Warrior, though long dead, you are still an opponent to be reckoned with.

Prince Valiant:
[to the dead] Although you men did not take my dagger, I'm going to have to ask you to provide its replacement.

Prince Valiant:
[to the skeletons] It seems we are all warriors without weapons. And that, my friends, is a most dangerous situation.

Rowanne:
[seeing a Viking skeleton] Arn, look. He's been murdered.

Arn:
Who's to say he didn't have it coming?

Rowanne:
Arn, that's not like you to say such an awful thing.

Arn:
There is much about me you've yet to know, Rowanne.

Arn:
There's nothing to tell.

Rowanne:
You mean there's nothing you would tell *me*!

Prince Valiant:
Woton, between you and the boar, it has not been my day for animals.

Tor:

[desperately] It was because of murderers like him that I no longer have a home or parents! That I am to forever be an orphan, wandering and alone! I want to feel my bare hands on his throat! I want him to die! He is a Viking, the same as those who killed my parents, and I want him to die!

Sir Mordred:
There may be many methods by which truth and justice can be protected. But the only truly efficient way to do it is with cold steel. And God help any kingdom foolish enough to forget it.

Prince Valiant:
I was just caught up in Sir Mordred's words.

Lady Morgana:
Yes. There are times when Mordred speaks a great many more of them than he should.

Merlin:
But in spite of their number, they still have the feeling that they leave much of the story untold.

Merlin:
Much of life appears senseless, at first glance.

Prince Valiant:
You do love surprises, don't you?

Merlin:
Surprises, my young friend, are the stuff of life itself.

Merlin:
Your memory of Mordred's crest and its meaning to you is not lost, Valiant. It is simply - misplaced, for the moment.

Merlin:
You have simply looked upon the truth. And there are times when that can be a terrible and frightening thing.

Sir Mordred:
Your technique is good, Bryant, but as always much too formal.

[yells as Sir Bryant trips him from where he landed on the ground disarmed]

Sir Bryant:
And you, Mordred, often forget to expect the unexpected.

Sir Mordred:
Never start a war without good reason. And never challenge an enemy you cannot defeat.

Sir Mordred:
How is it every time I swear to be free of you, I find myself back in your arms?

Lady Morgana:
Because you can no more be free of me than the night sky can be free of the stars.

Lady Morgana:
Save your murderous rage, Mordred. You're going to need it.

Dylan:
Oh, my.

Sir Henry:
That was my reaction on my first visit too.

Prince Valiant:
Cynan. If only my father had killed you. He won the battle, Father. But I swear, he's not won the war.

Denys:
Do you think it's possible that a man could fly, Arn?

Arn:
[amused] I think if man had been born to fly, we would have been born with feathers.

Rowanne:
But, Arn, we weren't born with fins, yet we can sail across the sea.

Denys:
So do you think it's possible for man to fly through the air like a bird, Rowanne?

Rowanne:
Well, I suppose anything is possible. But flying... I don't know, Denys.

Denys:
I'm glad we found Arn's horse, but I wish we hadn't lost all our food; some fish is probably having our honeycakes for lunch right now.

Rowanne:
Denys, why do I get the feeling that you're eating more than you're picking?

Arn:
[laughs] Don't tell me another one got away. You never could catch a fish, could you?

Prince Valiant:
All right. If you think you could do better... be my guest.

Arn:
Fishing, my friend, is what I *do* best.

Prince Valiant:
[Arn gets a clump of riverweed] Oh, yes. Very impressive.

[he tries to grab a fish by hand and falls into he water; Valiant laughs]

Denys:
What if we're trapped in here forever? What if there's a, wild animal just waiting for us? What if...

Rowanne:
Denys, as long as you're imagining things, please try to dream up something a little more pleasant.

Prince Valiant:
It smells like rotten eggs.

Merlin:
On the contrary, Valiant, it smells like freedom.

Arn:
I swear, there are times I fear that for all of his wisdom, Merlin may well be crazy.

Prince Valiant:
Perhaps, but if he is, then we would all do well to be so crazy.

Prince Valiant:
Thank you. You saved my life, Rowanne.

Rowanne:
My pleasure.

Rowanne:
Who are they? What do they want?

Arn:
They want to kill us, it's as plain and simple as that.

Merlin:
We'll be fine. As long as we can see both what is there, and what we perceive to be there.

Prince Valiant:
I like the hiding place you've chosen.

Denys:
You do?

Prince Valiant:
You know, when I was your age, I had a special tree. When I climbed into its highest branches, no one in the world could find me. I would go there when I was afraid and... when I didn't know what to do...

Denys:
Afraid? You used to be afraid?

Prince Valiant:
Yes. And, sometimes, I still feel like that scared little boy, hiding in the treetops.

Denys:
But - you're Prince Valiant. A knight of the Round Table.

Prince Valiant:
But that doesn't make me fearless.

Prince Valiant:
Sometimes I look at him, Merlin, and I see myself.

Merlin:
Yes, as you once were, so he is.

Prince Valiant:
Have I really lost my ability to dream, Merlin?

Merlin:
Oh, I don't think you've lost it, Valiant. Perhaps it's just temporarily misplaced.

I've seen you cross a brook on the run a dozen times. If you you can dance upon stones you can certainly dance upon...

Harold:
My boy, the true worth of a man is measured by the courage in his heart, not the silks on his back. This ia s subject on which I speak with authority. You see, I too am the son of a peasant.

Harold:
Someday I suspect the enemies will fall to their knees and beg for mercy just at the sight of you. Yes, my boy, you'll be among Camelot's greatest knights. No doubt about it. Just as long as you never lose faith in yourself. You can be anything you want.

I have good friends. I have all the love I need.

It's time, sir, that I tell you this. On occasion I have been known to boast of my valor in battle. But there is one encounter of which I have never spoken. Thirty men against thirty more at the Battle of Halidun. Throughout that battle, I fought at the shoulder of an able knight and a good friend. His name was Sir Hector of York. Arn:
[Gasps when Harold gives him his ring] But this was to be for your...

Harold:
Yes. Good-bye, son.

Belarius:
My dear princess, how did you ever get your father to change his mind?

Princess Aleta:
With a little trick I learned from you, Belarius. I simply appealed to his vanity.

Rowanne:
I'm afraid this promises to be a most unpleasant voyage home.

Arn:
Why would you say that?

Rowanne:
Oh, just call it a woman's intuition.

Princess Aleta:
If memory serves, the last time we met, you were looking at me down the shaft of an arrow.

Rowanne:
I remember.

Prince Valiant:
She unnerves me, Arn.

Arn:

Prince Valiant:
I-it's difficult to explain. But - I would as sooner face twenty armed men than face her alone. And yet, those same twenty men couldn't keep me away. I've never felt this way before.

Arn:
Are you feeling all right, Valiant?

Prince Valiant:
Arn, my friend, I don't know when I've never felt better

Rowanne:
I should have thrown that letter overboard when I had the chance, and her with it.

Rowanne:
I'm afraid, Arn. I fear I'm losing Valiant.

Sir Mordred:
Of all the sailing ships in the world, it was yours I had the misfortune to sink. It distresses me very much.

Prince Valiant:
I can't say it pleases me very much either.

Sir Mordred:
[holding out his sword] This - this is the only language an enemy understands. It's the only sure way to keep the peace.

King Hugo:
Don't worry about Aleta. She will do as I tell her.

Princess Aleta:
No, she will not!

Rowanne:
No matter what happens, you know that I would never intentionally do anything to hurt you - that you are part of my heart.

Prince Valiant:
Yes. Just as you are a part of mine. We will always be the dearest of friends.

Rowanne:

Prince Valiant:
We're home and we're safe. And I vow, I will fight to see that nothing ever changes that.

Merlin:

Prince Valiant:
When I felt the extra weight, I knew it had to be either a boy, or a very fat pigeon.

[Denys laughs]

Prince Valiant:
This is where I live. And as many times as I've seen it, it never fails to take my breath away.

Prince Valiant:
Denys isn't my squire. He's... he's my friend.

Rowanne:
