The Truth About Spring

Spring Tyler:
I don't know who you are or where you come from, but if that's all you have to say, then shove off!

Cark:
I could tell you where to go and you wouldn't need a map.

Cark:
Tyler, I could tell you where to go and you would not need no map to get there.

Spring Tyler:
I'm warning you, Tommy! You just better not start treating me like a girl!

Tommy Tyler:
If you did what you were supposed to, I wouldn't have to keep telling you, now would I?

Spring Tyler:
Sure you would... just to keep in practice.

Spring Tyler:
Once you get a hold on something you never let go. It's enough to drive a body wild.

Tommy Tyler:
Well it wouldn't be any long drive for the likes of you.

Skelton:
I take no particular pride in it, but after four wives, I consider myself in a position to know something about boredom.

Tommy Tyler:
I'm Tommy Tyler. This *mouth* here is my daughter Spring.

William Ashton:
Where do you usually sail, Mr Tyler?

Tommy Tyler:
Close to the wind.

Spring Tyler:
Too close, if you ask me.

Tommy Tyler:
Nobody asked you.

Tommy Tyler:
You'd think with my brains and her mouth we'd be better off than we are.

Tommy Tyler:
Your man here's been good enough to supply me with a few odds and ends for the fish I sent over this morning.

Skelton:
The price of fish seems to have gone up.

William Ashton:
What do I do with these rags?

Spring Tyler:
Those aren't rags. They're my clothes.

William Ashton:
Sleeping in pajamas is something people do without even thinking about it. That's all there is to it. People sleep in pajamas.

Spring Tyler:
I don't.

Tommy Tyler:
I ain't been much of a father to you have I? The day you were born I said to myself, here's one for freedom. Here's one they won't get. The night you were launched I reckon I was the happiest guy alive. I couldn't stop wondering what the finest thing I could do for you was. And then I knew... or I thought I knew. Well that 'fine thing' is the life you have now. Only now I'm beginning to wonder if it was the right thing after all. Fathers don't usually figure on their little girls growing up.

William Ashton:
Isn't anybody going to tell me what's going on?

Spring Tyler:
Not now. You'll find out soon enough.

William Ashton:
That's what I'm afraid of.

Sellers:
Where's Tommy?

Spring Tyler:
He caught the smallpox... and died.

Tommy Tyler:
Buried me at sea, did you?

Spring Tyler:
You don't have to look like that, it was a decent funeral.

Sellers:
Thought you was dead.

Tommy Tyler:
Didn't like the climate where they sent me so I came back.

[after Ashton is knocked almost unconscious by Sellers]

Tommy Tyler:
You just lost your first case, son.

[referring to the copy of Les Miserables Ashton is reading]

William Ashton:
You've read it?

Spring Tyler:
Uh-huh, a long time ago. Why do you seem so surprised? I'm not ignorant!

Spring Tyler:
Tommy taught me how to read and write... and how to add and subtract, too. Never did teach me how to multiply and divide. He said that would come naturally.

Spring Tyler:
I didn't care much for learning arithmetic, but Tommy made me. He said education is one of the penalties that go with civilization.

[Prayer before lunch]

Tommy Tyler:
As we fare, may others fare. Amen.

Spring Tyler:
I ain't much thought about it.

Tommy Tyler:
*Haven't*, not *ain't*.

Spring Tyler:
It means the same thing.

Tommy Tyler:
A shoe means the same thing as a boot, but a boot's what you're gonna get in a minute.

Spring Tyler:
Seems to me you're always doing things without thinking, Ashton - wearing pajamas... kissing...

William Ashton:
Hasn't anybody ever kissed you?

Spring Tyler:
You did. Nobody else would dare.

Spring Tyler:
You don't catch me painting myself up, do you? Wearing all kinds of hooks and straps and pumping perfume all over me enough to make a pig sick of the smell.

William Ashton:
That's not all there is to being a girl.

Spring Tyler:
Well it's enough to turn *me* against it.

Spring Tyler:
I'm me, Ashton. That's all I ever intend to be.

Tommy Tyler:
I told you he'd be here. If he hadn't been, I'd of lost all faith in crooks.

Tommy Tyler:
Think you can get along with Ashton without me for a while?

Spring Tyler:
I'll work at it.

Tommy Tyler:
I got a safe deposit box in Tampa with four thousand one hundred and sixty-seven dollars and twenty-two cents. Now if it develops today I ain't as smart as I think I am, see that she gets into some girls' school. A strict one.

William Ashton:
You still angry with me?

Spring Tyler:
Nope. I get over things fast; especially people and other diseases.

William Ashton:
You don't think much of people, do you?

Spring Tyler:
I don't know many of them. But if the ones I don't know are like the ones I know, then I don't want to know the ones I don't know.

William Ashton:
I doubt he's having a very good time over there.

Spring Tyler:
You don't know him. When he's having the worst time, that's when he's having the best.

Tommy Tyler:
My mother raised me to believe the man with the gun is the man who does the talking.

Cleary:
I admire a man who remembers his mother.

Spring Tyler:
What are you thinking so hard about?

William Ashton:
You really want to know?

Spring Tyler:
You tell me what it is, and I'll tell you if I want to know.

William Ashton:
Will you do me a big favor Spring?

Spring Tyler:
What?

William Ashton:
Stop calling me Ashton.

Spring Tyler:
What am I supposed to call you?

William Ashton:
Everybody else calls me Bill.

Spring Tyler:
Alright, I'll call you William.

William Ashton:
[chagrined] Thank you. Goodnight Spring.

Spring Tyler:
Goodnight Ashton.

Tommy Tyler:
I ain't gonna ask you why you weren't here to get supper last night. And I ain't gonna ask you why you weren't here to get breakfast this morning. I ain't even gonna ask you why you left the Sarah all alone without a soul on board. And I got other things in mind I ain't gonna ask you about.

Tommy Tyler:
I want to talk to Ashton.

Spring Tyler:
Are you going to shoot him?

Tommy Tyler:
Should I?

Spring Tyler:
He didn't do anything but keep me warm.

Tommy Tyler:
That's what God made fire for.

William Ashton:
I don't know what you're thinking, but I can assure you...

Tommy Tyler:
You don't have to assure me of nothing. I know Springer.

Spring Tyler:
When you kissed me before... well, I really didn't mind it all that much. So... before you go, will you do it again?

Spring Tyler:
Did you mean it when you said I'm not the worst looking thing you ever saw?

William Ashton:
I think you're beautiful.

Tommy Tyler:
You've become pretty fond of Ashton, haven't you?

Spring Tyler:
[nods]

Tommy Tyler:
Do you love him?

Spring Tyler:
[nods]

Tommy Tyler:
If he asks you to go with him and marry him... would you?

Spring Tyler:
You think he will, Tommy?

Tommy Tyler:
Yep. Yep, I think he will.

Spring Tyler:
You wouldn't hate me then if I left you and married Ashton?

Tommy Tyler:
I wouldn't take it kindly if you deprived me of grandchildren!

Spring Tyler:
When you get home, I guess you'll start right in sending people off to prison?

William Ashton:
I'm not that kind of lawyer.

Spring Tyler:
I didn't know there was but one kind. You mean there are good ones, too?

Tommy Tyler:
You brush your teeth, you hear me? And take a bath once in a while. No Philadelphia lawyer wants his wife smelling like a wharf rat.
