Wild Wild West is a 1999 American steampunk western action comedy film produced and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by S. S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. Loosely based on The Wild Wild West 1960s TV series created by Michael Garrison, the film stars Will Smith and Kevin Kline as two Secret Service agents who protect President Ulysses S. Grant and the United States during the American Old West. The supporting cast features Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek, Ted Levine, M. Emmet Walsh and Bai Ling. Produced by Peters Entertainment and Sonnenfeld-Josephson Worldwide Entertainment, Wild Wild West' was released theatrically in the United States on June 30, 1999 by Warner Bros. and was a major critical and commercial disappointment, grossing only $222.1 million worldwide against a $170 million budget.
