It's such an intense scene. Spike immediately understood that Julia chose to be hunted over killing him, yet he craved confirmation that she loved him, so he asked why she didn't use his life to buy her freedom. He gets his answer in the form of a question. For the same reason he loved her. Because she loved him. You could say it was a fatal love, yet I was always touched by how devoted they were to each other.

"It was raining that day, as well."

"And so you didn't come because of the rain?"

"I was supposed to kill you. It was all set up. If I had... I would have been free."

"So why didn't you? You chose to be hunted. Why?"
