Some context. In the 1963 novel, there is a Gerry Springer type of show. The host brings on upstanding citizens as guests and then reveals something about them that gets the studio audience to shout, “You’re just as shitty as we are.”

In 1991, the first episode of the Gerry Springer Show aired. The audience at Gerry Springer Show would raucously judge the hapless guests; however, I believe they were thinking, “These idiots are even shittier than we are.”

Springer’s show is gone and his audience has moved to trolling on Twitter and Facebook. With every post, they should be thinking, “Just as shitty as I am.” more »
