He is known for his lighthearted style of poems and for his translations of South American poets Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda. He has lived in Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Morocco, throughout Latin America, and in the United States, where he has been employed by The New Yorker magazine. He is also a film director of note; mainly for his direction of the controversial production of Armistead Maupin's first Tales of the City for PBS (and Channel Four in the UK) in 1993
