The current recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force say that the decision of whether or not to screen for prostate cancer in men ages 55 to 69 should be an individual one, made only after a discussion of the benefits and harms with their doctor, men age 70 and above should not be screened for prostate cancer, as the harms outweigh the benefits for this age group.

When we looked at the evidence now, we found that a few men who choose to be screened will benefit from screening. About one in 1,000 won't die from prostate cancer, and about three in 1,000 won't get metastatic disease, but we also know that many more men will get harmed( from screening). About 240 will have a high PSA, and only about 100 of these will actually be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
