Christopher Ferguson Rufo (born August 26, 1984) is an American conservative activist. Rufo is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributor to its magazine, City Journal. He is best known for his activism against critical race theory, which he says, "has pervaded every aspect of the federal government," poses "an existential threat to the United States," and is anti-American. He has been actively involved in Republican efforts to ban or restrict critical race theory instruction or seminars.Critical race theory considers the idea that racism is systemic in the United States; Rufo described his strategy to oppose critical race theory as intentionally misusing the term to conflate various left-wing race-related ideas in order to create a negative association. According to Rufo, "I am quite intentionally redefining what 'critical race theory' means in the public mind, expanding it as a catchall for the new racial orthodoxy. People won't read Derrick Bell, but when their kid is labled an 'oppressor' in first grade, that's now CRT." and "The goal is to have the public read something crazy in the newspaper and immediately think ‘critical race theory.'"
