I remember being with a bunch of senior leaders in November, screaming my head off about the price of gas in November and being patted on my head and saying like,' Don't worry, we got to get through Christmas and it'll be better in 2022,' i don't think that we have a great sense of where this is going.

What really stood out in Oxford was the role that the parents played, we came up with this bill, building on good work that others have done -- both in the state of Michigan and also federally -- and created a bill that would make it against the law for a person to keep an unsecured firearm if it's reasonable the child could access that firearm.

Bennie Thompson is what you would hope for in a committee chairman, bennie Thompson is serious and experienced, but Bennie Thompson also allows people on Homeland Security Committee, like Elissa Slotkin, to take leads on things that are important to us. You know a lot of my peers, complain about Homeland Security Committee chairman or chairwoman, who don't let them do anything.

The place where I hear a real debate about staying in, changing the plan, reversing the decision, is inside the Beltway, if you go back to my district, where veterans are sending their sons and daughters off to fight in the same war that they fought in, I think President Biden is in touch with popular opinion about this.

I will say it will be interesting to know what the plan is longer term, you know, the Michigan National Guard is back participating in protecting the Capitol right now, our National Guardsmen will not be here and should not be here forever. These gates and fences should not be here forever. So do we have a security situation that's better than January 6, especially given the hell that the Capitol Police has gone through as an organization since then ? That's definitely something I'm interested in.

What I wanted to see in this package is sticking to the very specific emergency need that the country has, and so I feel like there are a lot of things that I pushed for, and I believe in, especially money for our cities and towns. There's money for testing, like really critical things, and then there are some things that I don't feel like had to be in the bill, and what I'm trying to decide is does the net positive outweigh that negative.

The issue that got to me was this idea that the President, the most powerful man in the world, reached out to a foreigner, a foreign leader, and asked him to dig up dirt on an American.

I realized after a few people said it, that they were used to either a man running for office and the wife is way in the background, you know, quiet, not a part of the campaign, or there is a strong woman who's running, we've had strong women who have run and won, but their husband is nowhere to be seen. So when they saw a strong woman and a strong man together, that was new for them.
