The big takeaway for me is that Covid did not become the great equalizer [among nations]. It did not help our case at all, if anything, it exposed the existing holes in our health care system.

Presence of disease is an earlier indicator than the hospitalizations and can help us predict workforce needs, staffing needs for hospitals, if you know you've got a community that hasn't had a lot of infection and all of a sudden you're seeing it grow, then you can usually predict that two or three weeks from then, they're going to be seeing more cases in the hospital( and) tragically, death, too. However, with this new BA.2 Omicron variant we are seeing infections but not many severe hospitalizations.

This is not CDC's responsibility. They will be part of the process, but this is much bigger than CDC because this pandemic has been much bigger than just one agency.

What I would suggest what we do is, we look and we imagine some possible futures of where the disease might go, and then we plan the transition according to those various scenarios.

While CDC can provide some leadership there -- they can provide the science, they can provide the evidence, and maybe they can do the modeling -- because that involves so much of a society that's got to come at a higher authority, maybe the Covid Task Force pulls that together and lays it out for the nation.

The point being is, you lay out those scenarios, and then as a nation, we decide how we're going to handle that, with a consensus around that with the governors, with the mayors, and everybody kind of agrees that's what we're going to do, and that's how we move forward.

We've just spent many years preparing and talking about a pandemic, and quite frankly, we were not prepared. We did not put the infrastructure in place that we actually needed to put in place. We de-invested in... our health and public health systems in ways that quite tragically resulted in two years of significant outbreak that did not have to be as bad as it was, the real issue here is that we're about to do the same mistake again. We're about to have the same things happen to us because we have not really invested in the mitigation and adaptation that is necessary to address climate change.

As this goes on, who gets exposed changes. Everybody else is vaccinated, they don't get infected, so now we're seeing, at least statistically, the people who are getting infected changing, add to the fact that we have this new virus, and this new virus is going to do a couple of things. One, it's clearly much more infectious than the other viruses, and it's going to hit the ones who are most vulnerable.

The simple answer is -- you have a virus that's highly infectious. It's going to spread to the people who are most vulnerable, and that's going to be the people who are least likely to be vaccinated, and it's still true that the younger people are still least likely to be vaccinated.

History has told us that these things go away. And you have to do something to make them go away, even in 1918, 1919, people got infected and tragically the world had to go through that. We achieved some kind of equilibrium, got to herd immunity and it ended.
