I went to Saint Francis Xavier school in Brooklyn, NY, from the fifth grade to the eight I had Francisan Friers as teachers. The first year we were taught by Brother Decklen. Only once did he slap me in the face along with all the other student, about 48, for talking when he was out of the room. I wasn't talking at all neither were most of the students yet we were all punushed. However that was the only time that I can remember him hitting me, I was about 10 years old. At the end of that term I received a B+ on mu final report card. The next 2 years, sixth and seventh grades I had brother DePaul, who was about 6' 2" with an athletic build and a mean temper.
I wasw always hyper active and gaurelous, school work was painfully boring and would become distracted, instead of doing school work I drew pictuers and wrote stories. I became so focused I didn't notice that Brother DePaul was watching. Sometimes he would just throw one of those large felt blackboard erasers at my head and rarely missed, other if I got caught talking depending his mood he woud slap me in the face so hard my ears would ring all day, than there were times when he considered my infraction necessitated what he considered a more severe punishment i had to place my hands palms up were he would proceed to hit me on my hand with a fifteen inch, 3/4 inch thick Mahogany stick. If I retracted my hand I would get hit again for each time I retracted my hand. Not only did I have to endure this pain and humilition but I was forced to be complicit in this punishment and if I retracted my hand I got hit an extra time. For the nested thre years I never received more that a C- on my report card. By he I entered HS I considered teachers as adversaries. By the middle of my sophomore year I found the school work painfully boring and it was a violent school and I started cuting most of my classes. To be safe I went to the library each morning. I sat at a large oak table near the dictionary section. I told the librarian my circumstances and she recommended books for me to read. for the nexted 2 years i spent my days at the library reading. When I was 21 I received my GED with a a+ final. I then went to several colleges re: SUNY, NYU, LIU, Pratt Institute The New School for Social Research in NYC. I never received less the a B+. The only thing I learned from St Francis is to not trust Catholics
