To be me. To not apologize, to show younger people that no matter how many boxes they try to fit you in, you can be you and you can accept it. People tried to tell me not to do tattoos and piercings and all that. But look at me now, and I’m poppin’.

The idea was to hit back at the haters. I didn't feel like it was necessarily fair how they could keep saying whatever they wanted, but then if I said something, it wasn't fair, i want kids to learn that, yes, it's OK to acknowledge that you're good or even great at something.

We also have to focus on ourselves, because at the end of the day we're human, too, we have to protect our mind and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do.

I just felt like it would be a little bit better to take a back seat and work on my mindfulness. I knew that the girls would do an absolutely great job, and I didn't want to risk the team a medal for my screw ups because they worked way too hard for that, i took a step back because I didn't want to do something silly out there and get injured. I thought it was best if the girls took over and did the rest of the job, which they absolutely did.

I didn't do my job, they stepped up and they did what they needed to do and more, especially last minute [...] This medal is all of them and the coaches and it has nothing to do with me because they did it without me.

There's a big line on what you can and can’t do, what you can and can’t say to these kids rather than whenever I was growing up, i would say (back then): ‘OK, you say that. I’m pissed off but I’m going to do my work.' Now it’s like, I’ve even told the other girls: ‘Don’t take it to heart. They don’t mean to say that to you. So just let it roll off your shoulder.'.

I think the culture shift is happening, but it’s almost as if the athletes almost have too much power and the coaches can’t get a rein on it, so then it’s kind of wild. It’s like a horse out of the barn: You can’t get it back in.

Everything needs to be visible, and the coaches know that, the coaches know that they are watched at all times, not only from the viewing arena but by cameras. They know that. That should not distract from what they’re doing if they’re doing their job. They just know that there are cameras and they know that nothing is a secret. So yeah, just do whatever is right and you don’t even have to worry that anyone is watching you.

I dont mean to cry, but its hard coming here for an organization having had them failed us so many times. And we had one goal and weve done everything that theyve asked us for, even when we didnt want to and they couldnt do one damn job. You had one job. Everyones healing process is different and I think thats the hardest part, because I feel like maybe I should be healed or this or that. But I feel like it will be an open wound for a really long time and it might not ever get closed or healed.

When we tweet, it obviously goes a long way, were blessed to be given a platform so that people will hear and listen. But you know, its not easy coming back to the sport. I just wish I could see it for myself the way you guys see it because for me it’s normal, it’s something I do every day, sometimes when I watch( my performances on YouTube) I think it’s unreal. How is it possible that I can chuck Simone Biles in the air and do all these tricks and land them ?

The girls did their jobs. We went out there and had fun with it. It comes from all the practices we’ve done. We’re so prepared for this, we came into it mentally stronger. We were like, ‘OK, we’re actually really prepared for this, maybe even over-prepared, so let’s go and have some fun.’ I think that’s what we all did.
