I think a lot of times parents tend to gauge their own self-esteem on how well their kids do, like, 'I'm so and so's parent. Did you see how well my kid did?' maybe they're trying to make up for something that they didn't do when they were younger or something that they did do, maybe they want their kid to live up to them.
