What Pope Francis can do is solidify his base among the more centrist and center-left (bishops) and make it clear that he doesn't want to punish or exclude anyone, but also make it clear that he is going to continue with this basic approach, which is pastoral outreach.

Rev. James T. Bretzke, S.J., is Professor of Moral Theology on the Ecclesiastical Faculty of the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, and an accomplished veteran in reading the Roman tea-leaves found in both Church documents and recent gatherings such as the recently concluded Extraordinary Synod on the Family. He both did his doctorate in moral theology and taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and has also taught in Jesuit institutions in Seoul, Korea, Manila, Philippines, as well as in Berkeley, San Francisco and his native Milwaukee. Fr. Bretzke has authored over 90 scholarly articles and reviews, and 7 books, including last year Handbook of Roman Catholic Moral Terms published by Georgetown University Press and Consecrated Phrases: A Latin Theological Dictionary published by Liturgical Press—both of which garnered award from the Catholic Press Association in the Reference Book category. His A Morally Complex World: Engaging Contemporary Moral Theology (2004) is widely-used around the world and is now being released as an E-book. He speaks six languages and is a frequent “go-to” person for the local, national and international media on local, national on Church matters.
