So any time someone hands me a weapon, even if they tell me it's unloaded, the first thing I do is I check to make sure it's unloaded. I'll pull out the magazine and get a visual check, day or night, to make sure that it is actually clear. And I know 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, I know the condition of that weapon. It's that critical.
