Rev. Griffin:
If I live to bury Joe Madden, I'll say only four words over his grave: This was a man.

Joe Madden:
I got a knack at healing. I know something about it.

Sam Leeds:
Look, you're a great horse doctor, Joe, and...

Joe Madden:
There isn't much difference between a horse and a human. At least I know how to get started. You wouldn't even know that.

Lt. Glidden:
Do you realize that men have been given as much as twenty years in federal prison for giving liquor to an Indian?

Lt. Glidden:
You see they don't drink to get drunk. Their drinking is like praying. And then they kill.

Sam Leeds:
No bullets, no protection... not even anything worth taking a last look at.

Reverend Griffin:
It is God's earth, man. You wouldn't reject it in the hour of your death.

Sam Leeds:
I guess the winning hand always comes up after the game has been played. That's the way it always is.

Mr. Keon:
The kid can ride!

Joe Madden:
How do you know?

Mr. Keon:
I ought to know, I'm his Pa.

Joe Madden:
There might be a big war party out there.

Bert Keon:
Let me ride my own horse, and there's not an Indian pony that will even smell his dust.

Sam Leeds:
I like your notion, Reverend, that Apaches are just evils the Lord created to try honest men. I'm saved! I'm not an honest man.

Sam Leeds:
Some men are makers. They got to sweat for what they want. I'm a taker. I got to be one.

Sally:
You could be good and honest.

Sam Leeds:
I saw my father work his heart out on a lathe in Bridgeport. He died young and he died broke. He was an honest man. I never want to be one.

Sam Leeds:
Look, Reverend, you give a dog a bad name and everybody throws a stone at him. Sure, I gamble. I drink, too. I killed a man who was trying to kill me. This is a rough country and you got to take care of yourself.

Sally:
It's a kind of pity that I only like bad men and want to make them good.
