Wendell MacWherter:
I'm all for progress, sir, just not the kind that has your face on it.

[first lines]

[Couteau is trying to find the tracks of the murderer he, Clive and Jack have been trailing through a driving rainstorm]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Any luck?

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Nope.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
This trail washed out about five miles back. You seein' somethin' down there, Couteau or are you just takin' a rest?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[to Clive] I thought you said he could track a snake over a rock face.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
It's been two days. Let's get back... we all need some rest.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I'll double back, see if I missed anything. Meet you back in Bordertown.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
If you find him, Jack, don't do anything *stupid*.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I'll fire a warning shot. Make sure he doesn't lose you two in the woods.

[Harper tears a wanted poster off a wall]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
If you're in need of paper, there's a general store in this town.

Bogue Harper:
I don't recall asking for advice.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
It's just a neighborly suggestion. What's you interest in McKay?

Bogue Harper:
The man he shot in Helena two weeks ago died. He's worth double now... and he's mine.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Never much cared for a man who killed for dollars.

Bogue Harper:
Then stay out of my way, cowboy.

Bogue Harper:
Box of .44/.40 and some 12-gauge shot shells if you got 'em - double-aught buckshot. I'm gettin' too old to run down the wounded ones.

[Marie glares at the bounty hunter]

Bogue Harper:
Don't give me that lemon-suckin' look. If it wasn't for men like me you couldn't walk the streets.

[discussing Couteau, whose brother committed suicide in his jail cell]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
You know, maybe I should go talk to him.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I'll wager you won't find him. No, he'll probably disappear for a while, then one day he'll just walk into the saloon, sit down and have himself a bowl of chili.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Sounds like you know him, Jack.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Don't know him... just know someone who'd handle it the same way.

[last lines]

Marie Dumont:
What he did and what he was cannot be changed, Gabriel.

Gabriel Couteau:
He told us he was a man from nowhere. In a world this big, there should have been a place for him.

[hands Couteau a jackknife]

Marie Dumont:
I found this among John's belongings. I thought you might like to have it.

Gabriel Couteau:
Keep it for me. I can't take it now. Maybe later... someday.

Joanna Radway:
Would you take a look at Cale? That is, if you have the time.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
What happened to him, Joanna?

Joanna Radway:
You might say he's near dead from a bad case of stupidity.

[Joanna grabs an axe from her wagon]

Dr. Marie Dumont:
What's going on?

Joanna Radway:
You handle the near dead part, Marie, I'll handle the stupidity.

[Joanna burst into Zack's saloon carrying a huge axe]

Joanna Radway:
Howdy, gents.

Zack Denny:
Ah, something we can do for you, Mrs. Radway?

Joanna Radway:
Anybody with an appetite for life better get against the back wall.

[Joanna is destroying Zack's saloon with her axe]

Zack Denny:
Stop her! Do somethin'!

Clive Bennett:
What do you want us to do, Zack? Shoot her?

Zack Denny:
Well it might be a good idea!

[Joanna turns on Zack and raises her axe]

Zack Denny:
Only as a last resort, ma'am.

[When Joanna refuses to pay for damages to Zack's saloon, Clive throws her in jail]

Joanna Radway:
Oh, this is disgusting.

Clive Bennett:
It looks better in the dark.

Joanna Radway:
And you two - your jail is disgusting! Our reform committee will be seeking immediate improvements. Good day.

Clive Bennett:
[to Jack and Zack] If our jails weren't disgusting, everybody would want to stay in them.

[last lines]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
So, what's all this here?

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Experimenting. I've been trying to see if there's an easy way to test for poisons in grain alcohol.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Well, that's all poison to me.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
You don't drink, do you?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I can't, Marie. It's a big difference.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
I don't understand.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Lot of reasons why cowboys drink - some 'cause they're happy; some 'cause they're sad; some 'cause, well, they're just cowboys. Others... well, they're just trying to fill up a big hole that stays empty no matter what they do. For them, the problem was there a long time before they touched the bottle.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
That was you?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I spent some time with the bottle a while back, yeah. So can I give you a hand here?

Dr. Marie Dumont:
By all means.

[Marie sets some whiskey bottles before Jack]

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Choose your poison.

[Craddock has learned that his dead father was a cold-blooded murderer]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Yer a preacher's son and I'm a killer's. There ain't no gettin' away from that!

Cpl. Clive Bennet, RCMP:
Ya already have.

[referring to a baby Clive helped deliver]

Marie Dumont:
He's in perfect health. You did quite a job, Doctor.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
The Northwest Mounted Police, ma'am - we always get our man.

Samuel Carlton:
How come you got a gun?

Issac West:
Decoration. Some men wear diamonds - I wear cold steel.

Samuel Carlton:
You good?

Issac West:
Yeah, I'm good. You know, when I was about your age, I saw my master beatin' Pappy to death for stealin' some food. I swore before God and my mama that I was gonna kill him. So I stole this pistol and I practiced and I practiced until I could shoot a fly right out of the sky.

Samuel Carlton:
Did you kill him?

Issac West:
Who? The fly or my master?

Samuel Carlton:
Your master.

Issac West:
Nooo. I grew up, he went crazy and I lost the anger.

[last lines]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
I know this has been hard on you. I just want to say I respect you for doing it.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Twenty years ago, I might have let him go.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Twenty years is a long time.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Ain't it.

[first lines]

[Couteau is helping Olsen build a log house]

Karl Olsen:
I'm not paying you to sleep, Couteau. If you don't want the job, I'll hire someone else.

Gabriel Couteau:
Even a workhorse needs a rest, Mr. Olsen.

Karl Olsen:
If you are the workhorse, I am the prize pig.

[Couteau makes the sound of a horse neighing]

Karl Olsen:
What did you say?

[a horseman appears on the horizon riding hard]

Gabriel Couteau:
I said, "You have a visitor."

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Couteau's gun?

Clive Bennett:
One bullet fired.

[Jack rolls the dead man's body over, revealing a bloody chest wound]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
One bullet found.

[addressing the corpse]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Welcome to Bordertown, stranger. Enjoy your stay.

Clive Bennett:
Couteau's not a murderer.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
You just don't want to see it is all. Fellow like attracts trouble... and enemies.

Clive Bennett:
What about self-defense?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I got two witnesses who say it ain't.

[Jack indicates the corpse]

Clive Bennett:
Well, we'll know a whole lot more once we find out who this quiet fellow is.

[Liam has made a sketch of the murderered man who is propped in his barber's chair]

Liam:
There you are. I hope somebody recognizes the likeness.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Much obliged, Liam. That ain't bad. Look, you see the Corporal, tell him I'm off to Benton, will you?

Liam:
Wait! What am I going to do with him?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I don't know... Take a little more off the top.

Karl Olsen:
I saw the shot.

Willie Haddon:
You're lying! You really think your Pa shot him. Is that why?

Karl Olsen:
You can't prove anything.

Willie Haddon:
You're going to let Gabriel Couteau hang? I'm not going to let that happen.

Karl Olsen:
You say one word, Willie Haddon, and I'll kill you.

Willie Haddon:
That how you Olsens solve your problems?

[Karl points his shotgun at Clive]

Clive Bennett:
You know I have to take him, son.

Peter Olsen:
Shoot him, Karl. Shoot him!

Clive Bennett:
You don't want to do that, Karl.

Karl Olsen:
Shut up! Both of you, shot up!

Peter Olsen:
You listen to me. It's his life or mine! Shoot him!

Karl Olsen:
...No. I've done everything you've ever wanted. I can't do this, Father. I won't.

[last lines]

Karl Olsen:
He was always good to me. I mean, he was hard, but he loved me.

Clive Bennett:
I'm sure he still does. Nothing could change that. Nothing at all, Karl.

[discussing Emile's bicycle]

Emile Chabrolet:
In a few years, I expect it to replace the horse!

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Replace the horse? Huh! It looks to me like you should be hitchin' it to one.

[reading a sign on a box]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
T. Edison Company... Menlo Park... New Jersey?

Wendell MacWherter:
It arrived yesterday. I just got it going. This is what they call a generator. And this...

[Wendell holds up a large light bulb]

Wendell MacWherter:
...is what will bring Bordertown into the 1890s!

[referring to Wendell's electrification project]

Emile Chabrolet:
It must have cost some pretty pennies.

Wendell MacWherter:
Every bulb is a precious investment, sir - in the future.

[Jack taps on a light bulb, shattering it]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
It ain't what you call a very durable investment.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
You know, Marie, it beats me why people just keep tryin' to change things. I mean, no little glass ball's gonna give off more light than the stub of a candle.

Marie Dumont:
Oh, really?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Yeah.

Marie Dumont:
Lucky, not everyone thinks like you or we'd be still sitting in the dark without so much as a candle because no one would even bothered to invent that! See you, Jack.

Wendell McWherter:
Did you see my bank, Marshal? I can see a ghost move inside there, let alone a thief!

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Unless you sit up all night watchin' you won't see nothin'. You might as well have painted arrows, "This way to the money, folks!"

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Jack, you know what the problem with you is? You lack vision. If the whole town was lit up like his bank, it would go a long way towards preventing crime.

[when the lights went out, someone stole the money from off the poker table]

Card Player:
The money's gone and so is he!

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[to Clive] Whadja call it? Progress?

[first lines]

Dr. Marie Dumont:
I'm sorry your business is slow, Emmett, but what can this possibly have to do with me?

Liam Gleeson:
Consider now: what is the one thing that urges a man get a good shave and a haircut?

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Ah, I imagine it's because he needs a good shave and a haircut.

Liam Gleeson:
No - it's the presence of a good-lookin' woman.

[Clive smacks Jack with his fishing rod]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Why don't you play with that blasted thing outside?

Clive Bennett:
You know, Walton's right... angling is the monarch of leisure activity.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Does this fellow Walton happen to mention you do it in water? Fish are just crazy about it.

[referring to four gunslingers who recently rode into town]

Dr. Marie Dumont:
You know these men, Jack?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Nope. Can't say I'm tickled pink by what I see, either.

Clive Bennett:
Handles on those Colts seem somewhat palm-worn.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Yeah. You see those callouses on the edge of their left hands?

Clive Bennett:
Yeah, I noticed.

Liam Gleeson:
Um, I'm not with ya.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Hammer burns, Liam. Get it from fannin' a gun too much.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
They seem to have a particular interest in you.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Somehow I ain't too flattered, Marie.

Bat Masterson:
They prefer a split position. The Longmans are right in your eyes, the Beaumonts are concealed - one to each side. Now, they've picked positions so the sun will be just above them. Don't look up - watch low for their shadows. Do you understand?

Clive Bennett:
*Thanks*, Bat.

Bat Masterson:
Shooting starts, move to your right. Guns'll kick up... it'll take 'em a second more to resight.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[to Clive] Almost enjoy dyin' with such a walkin' wealth of learnin', ain't it.

[last lines]

[Jack and Clive interrupt Bat's poker game and run him out of town]

Bat Masterson:
And this used to be such a friendly little town. What happened? Marshal... Corporal...

Clive Bennett:
[to Jack] One of these days his luck is going to run out.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Yeah? I wouldn't bet on it.

[Jack shows Clive the cards in Bat's poker hand - he was holding four queens]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[to poker players] Sorry fellows, you lose.

[Clive Bennett comes to after being knocked out by a punch from Archie Stanton]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Hold on there, Clive. The fight's over. You know, maybe next time you shouldn't lead with your face.

[to the town banker]

Archie Stanton:
You know what I like about you, McWherter? You have larceny in your heart.

[Clive and Jack discuss clues found at the scene of a payroll robbery]

Clive Bennett:
If they were Blackfoot, they borrowed these arrows from the Cree. Ever hear of that?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Nope. Never seen 'em use a bullet on a strongbox, either. They'da used a rock.

Clive Bennett:
They'da left the mail alone, too.

[Clive examines a bloodstain on the wagon]

Clive Bennett:
This blood's all wrong. It's smeared around.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
You know, I guess they could have dragged the bodies off somewheres, but why?

Clive Bennett:
No bodies, no Indians - only leaves us the one choice.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Desertion. You got a couple of runners here, Corporal.

Paul Cain:
You're a dead man, Mountie, even if I have to pay the Devil to get out of hell!

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[to Clive] Look, Coteau and I will deal with him. You get back to Bordertown and

Paul Cain:
Remember what I said, Mountie. You die!

[Jack punches Cain]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
My hand slipped.

[Coteau punches Cain]

Gabriel Couteau:
Mine, too.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Have you seen Jack anywhere?

Clive Bennett:
No, but he left a note

Dr. Marie Dumont:
What does it say?

Clive Bennett:
I was hoping you could tell me. It is *English* you're teaching him, isn't it?

[Clive has been blinded when his gun misfires while fighting two murderers]

Kelly McGraw:
What are you doing? Keep moving!

Clive Bennett:
No. Leave me here; go get help. That's the best thing to do.

Kelly McGraw:
The best thing to do would be to leave you here - period. Unfortunately, I don't have it in me to do that.

Clive Bennett:
You don't stand a chance against these men. They're killers! They've already murdered two lawmen, possibly another.

Kelly McGraw:
Well, looking at you, I don't see any reason to admire lawmen.

[Craddock helps Jamie escape from being lynched but is captured in the process]

Horace Cole:
What are we going to do now?

Horace's Friend:
Well, no sense wasting a good noose, is there, Horace?

[referring to Horace Cole and his associate]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Pests - more like mosquitos than men.

Jamie McLeod:
Put enough mosquitos together and they can kill anything, brother.

[Jack tells Clive that he fired at Jamie but he still escaped]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
I'm eager to find out how you got a shot off without your pistol.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Ain't you ever heard of a rifle, Corporal, or don't you use them up in the British colonies yet?

[first lines]

[Jack throws a drunk railroad man out the saloon's front door]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Come on, Bennett, stop your lollygagging and get out here!

[another man comes flying through a saloon window]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
He took a shortcut.

Willie Haddon:
I'll see you again. I will be back.

Lucy Walker:
You'll meet another girl in Paris. I hear the girls there are very beautiful.

Willie Haddon:
Not as pretty as you - they couldn't be.

Moss:
Corporal! We're willing to surrender to you on your terms!

Marie Dumont:
What are your terms?

Corporal Clive Bennett:
I haven't decided yet.

[last lines]

Willie Haddon:
[narrating] Dear Marshal, when I think of you and all the things that you taught me, I can't figure out why I'd be going away from here, but I am. I remember nights listening to your stories of Texas and Mexico and the Civil War. I think the reason you're so smart is you've done things and seen things. Well, I gotta do that, too...

Marshal Jack Craddock:
[reading Willie's letter]... It probably ain't proper for a man to say, but I love you, Marshal, and I'm gonna miss you terrible. But you better be there when I get back, or I'm gonna have to chase you down. Your friend, Willie Haddon.

[Jack puts Willie's letter in his box of treasures]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Goodbye, Willie.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Back on my side, Jack?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Like a burr under yer saddle.

Lucy:
You like this country, don't you, Marie.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Very much - especially on days like this.

Lucy:
Is it different from where you come from?

Dr. Marie Dumont:
Like night and day, Lucy. France does not have the same space or the same adventure... and it's a place where a young girl always holds her tongue.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
I'm not sure I'd like it there.

Father George Brewster:
I must object, Corporal. These people should be properly buried.

Clive Bennett:
Father, if you were to die amongst the Indians, would you not want your believes respected?

Gabriel Couteau:
Their souls will not join the Great Spirit if they are covered with earth.

Clive Bennett:
I still would like you to come back to Bordertown. You may be ill as well.

Father George Brewster:
I will die the day my Lord calls me.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
That may be, Padre, but there no use in hurryin' him along now, is there?

Father George Brewster:
Are you sure you should keep this boy in town?

Dr. Marie Dumont:
What do you mean?

Father George Brewster:
The taint of the devil is on him.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
That is superstition. Many Indians have succumbed to diseases that have no effect on us. It's one of our *gifts* to them.

Father George Brewster:
I had you beat, Ms. Dumont. You saw what side the town was on.

Dr. Marie Dumont:
And you saw who won.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Get him out of here.

[last lines]

[Saloon girl Maggie has given her confession to a murderer posing as a priest]

Maggie:
Corporal, is it true he wasn't a real priest?

Clive Bennett:
I'm afraid so, Maggie.

Maggie:
That's not very good. That's not very good at all!

[Clive Bennett is preparing for his wedding]

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
And, Marshal, how grand to see you again. You're, ah, you're not interested in following my son's lead, hmm?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Oh, I don't see much point in that, Reverend. I already know how to cook and I'm pretty fair at mendin', too.

Anna Dawson:
You know, I must confess that before this evening, I was a little frightened of meeting you.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
Oh, my son has a tendency to describe me as an ogre.

Anna Dawson:
No, no, nothing like that. You're just such a fine family.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
Well, one that's finer for your addition.

[Clive is wearing his best Mountie uniform for his wedding]

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Whew! You gettin' married or reenlistin'?

Corporal Clive Bennett:
It's been a big part in my life, Jack. It doesn't come off until I've said my vows.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
You know, right now I wish I was you. You're marrying a beautiful woman. You're startin' out. I wish you all the luck in the world, Clive, from the bottom of my heart.

[to avenge his outlaw brother's death, Cain has shot Clive's bride]

Paul Cain:
Life for life, hand for hand, foot for foot...

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Don't you dare quote scripture.

Paul Cain:
Wife for brother! Kill me if you want to, Corporal... it ain't gonna sweeten your pain. You're carryin' that to the grave.

[Cain draws his pistol, then slips and falls off a cliff]

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Those that sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
Why are you leaving Bordertown, son?

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Honestly?

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
Yeah.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
I'm running, that's why.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
There's no freedom in flight.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
I know... but that place means death to me.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
God makes everything new in time.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Father, I killed Anna as sure and as true as if I pulled the trigger myself.

Rev. Harrison Bennett:
No, you did not - Cain did! Go back home, son. Your friends will share your suffering.

[last lines]

Marie Dumont:
He's not coming back. You heard him when he left. He meant what he said.

Marshal Jack Craddock:
I ain't sayin' he didn't mean it. I just know he's comin' back.

Marie Dumont:
How can you be so sure?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
'Cause Clive and me are like black and white, Marie. When Don Carlos killed my wife, I ran as far and as fast as I could. I never even looked back. You see, Clive is like the white side of me. Anything I'd do, he'd do the opposite. Oh, he'll be back - and he'll find his desk ready to go. Now, would you happen to remember if he kept his reports here on the left side?

Corporal Clive Bennett:
Nothing quite as peaceful as a country morning is there, Jack?

Marshal Jack Craddock:
Except maybe sleep.

Corporal Clive Bennett:
You know, my father used to say if a man took five minutes to look around before he started his day, things would go so smooth...

[Clive stops speaking as a herd of wild horses comes charging down Main Street]
