Detective Kevin Corcoran:
I have a favor to ask.

Elizabeth Haverford:
Well that's fortunate. I've brought you here to ask a favor of my own.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[pulls out Elizabeth's letter] Next time, could you ease up on the rose water? I will not hear the end of it at the precinct-house.

Elizabeth Haverford:
Embarrassing you was not my intention. It's just the way I smell.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Are you all right?

Eva Heissen:
It's not the first dead body I've seen.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[Addressing Capt. Sullivan on manpower] You listen to me, you slimy piece of sh*t. The sign on the door may say "Captain," but it's been a long time since you've been in charge of this precinct. These here, they're my men, and they'd sooner follow me into hell before saving your hide. So they're gonna stay on the beat until we find Francis Maguire. Understand me?

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
I was needed in the war.

Detective Francis Maguire:
You were needed at home, a home you abandoned! When you returned during the riots, you gave Ellen hope that she's got her husband back. But no, Kevin Corcoran, the war hero heads off onto the battlefield again. You talk of hell, Corky. Look around. This is Five Points, the closest place to hell on Earth. And you left your wife and your daughter here alone twice voluntarily. At times we didn't know if you were alive or lying dead in some creek. I did what a man needed to do. I took care of your family.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[Speaking to his officers] All right. He wants mayhem, let's give him mayhem.

Elizabeth Haverford:
You know, Mr. Booth, I find it remarkable that the South has gone to war seeking their own independence over the notion an entire race be denied their own.

Detective Francis Maguire:
I'm not asking for forgiveness, Kevin. I needed you to know the entire truth. You deserve that much from me.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
We've all committed our share of sins, some of them part of the job, some of them part of us. But you, confessing now, don't make the worst go away.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[Speaking to Ellen Corcoran] Now these things, you see, if there's a problem, I act. I try to fix it. That's just the way I am. But if, in trying to help, I hurt you, then I'm, I'm sorry.

Detective Francis Maguire:
[joining the other two at the bar] You limp-d*cks solve the case yet?

Andrew O'Brien:
Oh, I believe we did, Francis.

Detective Francis Maguire:
Ah, grand. Who'd you pinch?

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Nobody.

Detective Francis Maguire:
Nobody?

Andrew O'Brien:
Noooo-body.

Detective Francis Maguire:
[eyeing them suspiciously] The two of youse are grinnin' like Cheshires. Spill the beans.

Andrew O'Brien:
[Corky gestures at Andrew to tell the story] Oh, well thank you, Corky. Mrs. Ethel Devery...

Detective Francis Maguire:
The dentist's wife.

Andrew O'Brien:
Herself. She was, uh, havin' her way with the local butcher lived on the floor below. Now the butcher, he was fightin' with the landlord, and the landlord, he was the one who gave the fruitcake to Gilles Devery.

Detective Francis Maguire:
So the landlord murdered Devery. [Andrew and Corky shake their heads] The butcher murdered Devery. [They shake their heads again] Then who murdered Devery?

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Devery!

Detective Francis Maguire:
[annoyed] I'm gonna knock the piss outta the both of ya!

Andrew O'Brien:
[demonstrating with a shot glass] Ethel Devery baked the fruitcake for Elek, the butcher, her lover. Gilles Devery, the dentist, found out that his wife was, uh, breakin' the seventh Commandment, so when Ethel left for Poughkeepsie, Devery poisoned the fruitcake, [he fills the glass] planned to kill Elek and have her blamed for the crime. Devery then delivered the fruitcake to Elek, [passes the shot to Corky] but Elek didn't eat it. Instead, he put it in a Nellis Bakery box and gave it to Lunsford, the landlord.

[Corky drops the shot into a stein of beer and passes it down to Francis. Andrew snatches it away and takes a drink]

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Lunsford passed the fruitcake back to Devery, who, thinking it was a Nellis', the best goddamn bakery in New York, ate a piece.

Detective Francis Maguire:
[in disbelief] The dentist poisoned himself?

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
He did indeed. [all three start laughing; Francis takes the boilermaker back]

Andrew O'Brien:
Byrnes was murdered by a dead man.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[laughing harder] At least he wasn't knifed in the groin, like his brother!

Andrew O'Brien:
He got his desserts, though!

Detective Kevin Corcoran, Detective Francis Maguire:
Tare an'ouns, all this take a'fruitcake is making me hungry. [Corky shoves a plate of food down to him]

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Maybe you tired of his fooling around.

Ethel Devery:
Those whores who'd let him put anything in their mouth to get their teeth tinkered with? God bless them for doing something I didn't have the stomach to do.

Jack Turnow:
[Arriving at the bedside of his daughter and speaking to Lydie Turnow in the presence of Dr. Matthew Freeman] I told you this fool was no better than some cracker doctor.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
What's wrong, Matthew? What's wrong?

Doctor Matthew Freeman:
Lincoln's been shot.

Elizabeth Haverford:
The war may soon be over, but the fighting won't end. Half a million dead! Is emancipation really worth all the lives lost?

Robert Morehouse:
Are you advocating slavery?

Elizabeth Haverford:
Of course not.

Detective Francis Maguire:
I need the bullet which killed Mary.

Doctor Phineas Grimes:
Look, I don't work for the City. I don't work for the Metropolitan Police, and I certainly don't work for micks like you. So why don't you toddle off and find a saloon?

Eva Heissen:
[Uttered in German at her trial when the jury is seated] Scheisse.

Brendan Donovan:
[Speaking in Gaelic to Kevin Corcoran] Mo chara. Mo namhaid.

Brendan Donovan:
The first order of business is to capture the reprobate, Buris Buzzie Burke.

Sergeant Padraic Byrnes:
You're a smart one, Corky. You really do remind me of my dead brother.

Andrew O'Brien:
[while pointing a gun at John Reilly] If you're not on that 7:00 ferry, I will put a slug in your head and let Chang the Chinaman cut off your privates for chop suey, huh? Do you understand?

Ellen Corcoran:
[while tussling] Oh, you thief! You give me back that necklace! You are the Devil's child!

Annie Reilly:
And you're a crazy old whore!

Eva Heissen:
[Speaking to Elizabeth Morehouse] Wives are like whores with marriage certificates.

Eva Heissen:
General Donovan, a whore is like a lawyer or a priest, we betray no confidences.

Elizabeth Morehouse:
[Speaking to the Freemans] Caucasian or Negro, you men seem willing to risk anything, be it your marriages or your lives, rather than suffer a bruise to your pride.

Doctor Matthew Freeman:
You're Irish, to the pit of your heart, and you Irish know how to hate!

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Oh, I hate all right, but not in general. My hate is as specific as my affections.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
What happens if, if I die, never knowing what happened to Ellen, or who killed my little girl?

Robert Morehouse:
Then you'll be dead, same as all of those who have gone before you, same as all of us who follow. None of it will matter, not a bit.

Robert Morehouse:
One fundraiser to train more Union troops, another to aid the South. Mrs. Haverford, I do believe that you are playing both sides.

Elizabeth Haverford:
Oh, Robert, in times of war, only men choose sides. Women just want the ugliness to stop.

Robert Morehouse:
You'll be dead. Same as all of those who have gone before you and same as all of us who follow. None of it will matter. Not a bit.

Annie Reilly:
Excuse me, sir. Wouldja like me to pleasure you?

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[while pointing his pistol] You can talk or you can pray.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
[Speaking to Andrew O'Brien about Tim Doman] Let's give him some time to rethink. Put him in the suite.

Ellen Corcoran:
[Speaking to her husband] You have this instinct to protect people, Kevin. I love that in you. The nobility. But sometimes I can't help but feel that you, you choose to save other's lives at the expense of our own.

Robert Morehouse:
Be careful, Corky. There are walls even a man as dexterous as you can't climb.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
I don't intend to go over the wall, Major. Like all Irish, I'll go through the back door.

Captain Ciaran Joseph Sullivan:
[Speaking to Kevin Corcoran] I told you the case was closed. Now, what in the name of the risen Christ are you doing, blighting the Bishop of the goddamn Episcopal diocese?

Hattie Lemaster:
[Speaking to Sara Freeman after learning how her sons died] They were my babies! What kinda woman has this vicious city turned you into?

Roxana:
[Speaking in her cell to Eva Heissen] I got no fear of dying. Hell, this life was sure miserable enough. How much worse could the next one be?

Orrin Lansing:
[Speaking to Brendan Donovan] If I find out you had anything to do with that perfidy at Eva's paradise, you will wish you'd never left that rancid potato bog you call home.

Robert Morehouse:
[Opining at Eva Heissen's establishment] No, the South has just as much right to be free from the Union as the 13 Colonies had to be free from England.

Doctor Matthew Freeman:
[Examining a liquid for Robert Morehouse] Greek fire. I've seen it a few times, but never enough to fill a jar like this. Some say Nero used it to burn Rome.

Cavalry Captain:
[Advising Robert Morehouse] Major, keep your wits about you. There are scattered bands of Rebs wandering the land, and they ain't all convinced the hostilities is ended.

Doctor Matthew Freeman:
[Opining at a battlefield site] At once dreaming, yet more awake than any man could possible be. I expect these memories will forever metamorphose.

William 'Wild Bill' Eustace:
[Speaking to his associates] I'm beginning to think that Kevin Corcoran does not take us seriously.

Detective Kevin Corcoran:
Ramsey was the instigator. We will bury the Grand Jury with witnesses.

Eva Heissen:
Kevin, I've been around New York long enough to know the truth rarely wins the day.
