[Buck's men encounter a slave for the first time]

Jacob:
My, my. You're a long way from home.

Little Bit Lucket:
We're going to be longer. We're headed for Virginia.

Jacob:
Ain't that nice.

Little Bit Lucket:
You know, where the war is. We're goin' to fight Yankees.

Jacob:
I hear tell the Yankees is fightin' us. I hear tell they're mighty mean! Oh, I reckon we'll whip 'em.

Buck Burnett:
We?

Jacob:
Yessir - us Southerners.

[Buck's men have been thrown out of an elegant party because of their ragged buckskin clothing]

Airybelle Sumner:
As an Alabama patriot, I implore you to come back inside.

Buck Burnett:
Oh, I don't think we'll do that ma'am. A man can get bit once by a rattler by accident; if he gets bit twice, well, that's just bein' stupid.

Airybelle Sumner:
Then please accept my apology and my gratitude for the brave and noble thing you're doin'. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Buck Burnett:
Ma'am, we don't know much about this here war, but as long as there are ladies like you that support it like you do, then I'm sure we'll win. We'll remember what you said when we get to war. It'll help us from bein' tired.

Miller Nalls:
Buck, this whole thing ain't workin' out.

Eubie Bell:
Yeah! We're horse soldiers and they got us scratchin' gravel.

Miller Nalls:
You know, I been thinkin'. I ain't got a thing against a Yankee. I never seen one.

Buck Burnett:
Well, this is war. We're Southerners; we gotta fight. It's a matter of freedom.

Miller Nalls:
Whose freedom? Like that slave we took in, Buck? Look what happened to him!

Eubie Bell:
What happened to him?

Buck Burnett:
Never you mind, Eubie.

Eubie Bell:
No, I want to know what happened to him.

Miller Nalls:
They hung him!

Buck Burnett:
We got a Yank in here?

Sgt. Mercer Barnes:
Now, Texas, there's an old sayin' among soldiers - when the minie balls is flyin' and the artillery is hotter than hell, there ain't no such thing as an enemy. Besides he was here in first - it don't seem neighborly to throw him out now.

Miller Nalls:
Todo, Eubie, Little Bit, Willie Bill, J.C. - they're all dead. We didn't make of a splash, did we?
