Man Without a Gun

[opening narration for each episode]

Adam MacLean:
This is Yellowstone, Dakota Territory: jumping off place for The Badlands. It's a small town, but it's growing - maybe too fast, maybe too violently. It's got law and people who respect it... and of course, those who don't. We've got a newspaper. It's not big, either, but it will be. I run the newspaper. That's my name on the window - Adam MacLean.

[Adam and the bartender have a bet on the outcome of their chess game]

Adam MacLean:
Are you going to pay up?

Bartender:
Aw, don't be so greedy, Adam. Hey, look! I do have a move right there.

Adam MacLean:
Yeah, ha-ha. Your rooks get around too much, Badger - especially when I'm not looking.

Bartender:
Are you accusing me of skullduggery?

Adam MacLean:
No, just old-fashioned cheating - the same as always.

[last lines]

Adam MacLean:
[narrating] Corporal Cort Hamish, formerly of the 7th Cavalry rode away from Yellowstone a man who once again had begun to live. In another direction rode Mark Ryan - a dead man who had not yet found a way to die.

[Marshal Tallman finds Adam vigorous shaking a package]

Marshal Frank Tallman:
If it gurgles, I'll split it with you.

[Morgan walks along the boardwalk, rapping the ground with his cane]

Adam MacLean:
That's funny...

Marshal Frank Tallman:
Why? We've had blind men in town before, Adam.

Adam MacLean:
They've never carried guns. The one he's carrying is in a tied-down holster.

Marshal Frank Tallman:
Yeah. I've never heard of a blind man having to make a fast draw.

[Adam persuades the marshal to arrest a man on flimsy evidence]

Marshal Frank Tallman:
I sure hope we're not barking up the wrong tree.

Adam MacLean:
If it's the right tree, we'll have plenty to bark about.

Thad Foley:
Real brave, ain't ya, sneakin' up on a man.

Mark Brandeen:
I don't see a man. All I see is a horse thief.

[over Tallman's objection, Adam insists on printing the news that Manson, a gunslinger, is staying in Yellowstone]

Marshal Frank Tallman:
I should have saved my breath to blow on my soup.

[When Steve Bell tries to convince the marshal that he's Bart Mungo so his wife can collect the reward, Mungo sends a crony to Yellowstone to identify the 'criminal']

Bart Mungo:
I figure if a fella is kind enough to put himself in my coffin, the least I can do is help him nail down the lid.

[first lines]

Adam MacLean:
[narrating] When the famous lawman, Johnny Kansas, cleaned up a town he had his own way of doing it.

[cut to Johnny gunning down an unarmed prisoner]

Adam MacLean:
[narrating] But we in Yellowstone found out later he sometimes left more dirt than he cleaned up... and it was under the rug where it didn't show.
