Megazone 23 (?????23, Megaz?n Ts? Sur?) is a four-part Japanese cyberpunk original video animation created by AIC, written by Hiroyuki Hoshiyama and Emu Arii, and directed by Noboru Ishiguro, Ichiro Itano, Kenichi Yatagai and Shinji Aramaki. The series debuted in 1985. It was originally titled Omega Zone 23 (??????23, Omega Z?n Ts? Sur?) but the title was changed just before release. The story follows Shogo Yahagi, a delinquent motorcyclist whose possession of a government prototype bike leads him to discover the truth about the city. Released on the VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc and VHD formats, the first part was a major commercial success upon release in 1985, selling over 216,000 copies in Japan, mostly to video rental stores. At a price of ¥7,800, the first part grossed approximately ¥1.7 billion ($21.3 million) from video sales in Japan. The film's concept of a simulated reality has drawn comparisons to later films including Dark City (1998), The Matrix (1999) and Existenz (1999).

It's manipulated us so skillfully that we'd never realize the truth. All of this except for an elite few the populous would be blissfully living in a illusion of the perfect world... or rather the perfect prison.

BD:
Why, Mr. Nakagawa, You know that the company frowns on the borrowing of classified materials?

Shinji Nakagawa:
Since when did the 'company' start sending out goons with handguns?

BD:
What? He drop-kicked a cop car?

Yui Takanaka:
I'm so glad!

Yui Takanaka:
[laughs]

Yui Takanaka:
Shogo, I still can't believe it! a motorcycle that changes into a robot? [laughs]

Yui Takanaka:
Shogo, I kept praying that you'd- [Shogo slaps Yui]

Yui Takanaka:
Are you out of your mind?

Sh?go Yahagi:
You were in that sleazebags hotel room for Christ's sake!

Yui Takanaka:
What I was doing was none of your business!

Sh?go Yahagi:
Oh is that right?

Yui Takanaka:
That's right, but of course how can I expect you to understand? It's my life but your too Goddamn selfish to figure that out! You saved me now goodbye! It's over. I would've had the opportunity for a real role but now it's finished. I appreciate your help.

Sh?go Yahagi:
So you were sleeping with that guy to get a job?

Yui Takanaka:
That Shogo was between me and him! Don't call me!
