Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is a first-person action-adventure video game developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console. A part of the science fiction Metroid series, it is the third main installment in the Metroid Prime series. It was released in North America and Europe in 2007 and in Japan the following year. The story of Corruption is set six months after the events of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It follows Samus Aran as she confronts the Space Pirates, who have launched an attack on the Galactic Federation naval base on Norion. While fending off a Space Pirate assault, Samus and her fellow bounty hunters are infected with Phazon by her doppelgänger Dark Samus. After losing contact with the other hunters, the Federation sends Samus on a mission to determine what happened to them. During the course of the game, Samus works to prevent the Phazon from spreading from planet to planet while being slowly corrupted by the Phazon herself. The player controls Samus using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk devices; the remote is used for jumping, aiming, and firing weapons, while the Nunchuk enables actions such as moving Samus and locking onto enemies. Corruption introduces features new to the Prime series, such as Hypermode, which allows Samus to use more powerful attacks, and the ability to command her gunship. The new control scheme featured in Corruption took a year to develop and caused the game's release to be delayed several times. The game was first shown to the public at the E3 2005 trade show. Reception to Corruption has been positive, with several reviews specifically praising the gameplay. More than one million copies of the game were sold in 2007. It was re-released in August 2009 as part of Metroid Prime: Trilogy, a Wii compilation of the three main games of the Prime series with Wii Remote controls. Although Retro announced that Corruption would be the closing chapter of the Prime series, the next main installment, Metroid Prime 4, was announced in June 2017 and will be developed by a new team.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
Gandrayda! enough! [Gandraydal laughs before taking off her suit]

Fleet Admiral Dane:
Looks like everyone's here now. Before I begin the briefing, let me introduce 242, the flagship's Aurora unit. [the hologram image of Aurora Unit 242 appears]

Ghor:
Ah, an organic supercomputer. Fascinating. It is my understanding that the Galactic Federation's core network is comprised of such units.

Aurora Unit 242:
That is correct Ghor. And we serve as the network's master control. However currently the network is down.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
That seems inefficient.

Aurora Unit 242:
But Necessary. You see, seven days ago we discovered that all Auroras Units were infected with an unknown virus. We were forced to bring the network down. Fortunately, our scientist were quickly able to devise a vaccine.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
Unit 242 was the first AU to receive the vaccine. We were able to completely purge the virus.

Gandrayda:
Where did this virus come from?

Fleet Admiral Dane:
We believe the virus is of Space Pirate origin. Four months ago, The G. F. S. Valhalla went missing while on a training mission in the Klar Nebula. The ships logs revealed that they were attacked by a Space Pirate raiding vessel.

Ghor:
What is the logic in disrupting a Federation training mission?

Gandrayda:
They're pirates. How could they resist a prize like that?

Rundas:
That never would've happened if I'd been there.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
Then it's a shame you weren't. The pirates boarded the Valhalla and gained access to the ship's Aurora Unit 313. This is how they were able to hack into the network and plant the virus.

Aurora Unit 242:
Thanks to our security protocols, we were able to shut down the network before the damage from the virus became irreversible.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
But we're still vulnerable. If the pirates decide to launch a major offensive, we'd be hard pressed to defend ourselves. We must rid the other AUs of that virus and bring the network back online. That's where you come in. We need you to deliver the vaccine to each of the AUs in this system. We'd also like you to investigate the pirates activity in the area. We need to know what they're up to. [Suddenly the ship shakes and the alarm goes off]

Aurora Unit 242:
Condition red. All personnel to combat-ready stations. Repeat condition red...

Federation Marines:
Sir, a space pirate attack fleet has just warped out of some sort of wormhole. They're also heading for sector zero, the planets home base.

Fleet Admiral Dane:
Damn! They're targeting the planetary-defense system. Get down to the planet and aid the ground troops! Stop those pirates from disabling the defense system! Go! [the characters walk out of the room]
