It is no exaggeration to call this a digital revolution. The zeroes and ones of computer language are literally transforming every part of our lives. It's been true from the time writing was first conceived and ideas could then be preserved and built upon over generations to the invention of the printing press, which allowed those ideas to spread, to modern communications technology, which has literally created a global village.Over all those centuries, the rate of change in our lives has grown faster and faster until today, when it seems we can barely catch our breath. A hundred fifty years ago, we were a nation of farmers and just four percent of us processed information for a living. Today, moving information around, just information, accounts for an enormous part of the US gross national product. We hear about the latest computer technology, a new chip that will hold a thousand times more information than the ones we have now and we marvel. But we don't know what it means. How will it make our lives different?
