David Livingstone was the first white man to gaze upon this magnificent spectacle, and he writes in his journal that the natives who accompanied him were overcome with fear. They believed the falls to be inhabited by evil spirits, and the clouds of spray that rose from the thundering cauldron probably inspired the native name "The Smoke That Thunders".
