Hank Saxon:
[Talking to Diane after he has shot his accomplice] Around here everybody... even you think I'm one third Apache. Well, in the war they dropped me behind the lines up in North Korea. Believe it or not, they thought I was a third Korean. Yea, I'm a third of wherever I am; a third of whomever I'm with. I'm like a lizard in the sun - I blend, blend with the landscape. Not because I want to. All my life I've been trying to find a way of becoming three thirds of something. [He looks directly at her] Diane, you could make me three thirds of myself. [She doesn't answer, but turns away to mount her horse]

Tod Stiles:
[Tod's inner soliloquy, heard as a voice over on the sound track] What made me come along? Why was I afraid not to go? Was it because I knew this was a moment I'd learn something important? Was I afraid to face it for whatever it was? All right, so what did I learn? That people can only make themselves important at the expense of others? These killings - were they murders? Were they sacrifices, each to a private reason, each to a hidden God? Do people really think that if they go through life without hurting other people nobody will ever know they had been alive? [Now yelling at the members of the departing posse] I don't believe that! Nothing you do and nothing I see can make me believe that! [Fade out]

Dixie Martin:
[spoken to Tod Stiles, paraphrasing the name of a 1960 movie] "How are all the brave young cannibals?"

Linc Case:
For the record, we believe you.

Julie Severn:
If you mean it, why did you have to say it? You're just dying to know who was after me and why. You know, all that time you were coming on, I was thinking, 'there's a boy who polishes his conscience every morning, so he can enjoy the shine of his own goodness'.

Miss Benson:
What do I call you?

Buz Murdock:
Buz.

Miss Benson:
Is that a name or a high frequency?

Manager:
[Tod calls the hotel's manager looking for Linc] Five girls? They're here right now. Mr. Mellonhead? Just a moment. [She hands the phone to Linc] You're name is Mellonhead?

Buz Murdock:
[Buz is driving the Corvette along side of Arline who is walking on the side of a road] Look, I want you to know that no matter what it looks like, it's not a pick up. The good people need to dig each other right now or forget it. Two half truths never made an integrated single, but two truths together, man, that's a crazy square root.

Caleb Garth:
[speaking of Tod and Buz] And I say they did it. And I say we gonna swing the pair of 'em higher than a buzzard can fly.

Sidney Brookes:
[to Linc Case] The ones who get hurt, they're the winners. The ones who do the hurting, we're the losers.

Sidney Brookes:
What's your name?

Edgar:
Edgar

Sidney Brookes:
Have you ever been on a couch, Edgar? I mean, have you ever had your psyche probed?

Edgar:
Well, we're not allowed to date the guests. ma'am.

Sidney Brookes:
People don't fall in love anymore, Edgar. They form a mutually compulsive complementary inter-relationship of egos. [She turns and walks away]

Mr. Fontaine:
I'll find him, Sheriff. I've always found him.

Sheriff:
This time you're too late.

Mr. Fontaine:
But what makes you think this dead girl is his dead girl?

Sheriff:
The look on your face tells me you think so.

Mr. Fontaine:
But maybe I'm not too late for the second girl.

Buz Murdock:
This guy Fontaine - is he dangerous?

Sheriff:
He escaped from an asylum back east.

Buz Murdock:
You mean he's insane?

Mr. Fontaine:
No, no, just angry. He's consumed with wrath, tortured with memories, doing the killing I didn't do. Doing it for me, and for himself.

Mr. Fontaine:
Armand!

Armand Fontaine:
Father? Oh Father, please make them go away.

Mr. Fontaine:
We must go, Armand. Not they. You and I. We must go home.

Armand Fontaine:
No. I want Penny. Please send Penny to me. I promise I'll be gentle. I won't hurt her. I won't hurt her the way you hurt Mother.

Mr. Fontaine:
I've told you ten thousand times, Armand. I did not kill your mother. That's only something in your mind. A fantasy. It never happened.

Armand Fontaine:
I was with you. I saw it! She was there, and the other man. She laughed at you, and she laughed at me. She didn't even care. And then I saw you go to her. I saw you push her face down into the pillow. I saw you smother her in the white pillow until she was dead.

Mr. Fontaine:
No, Armand, she is not dead. Your mother is not dead. Try and remember how it really happened. We came home that night, unexpected. We surprised her. That part is true, Armand, but then I took you away. I took you out of there that very second because you were too young to know about such things. I never said a word to her, Armand. I never touched her. I did not harm her, Armand.

Armand Fontaine:
That's not true! We punished her! We made her perfect again!

Mr. Fontaine:
Only in your own mind, because that's what you want it to be. God knows I was tempted, but you wanted revenge. Don't you see what's happened to you, Armand? By killing her over and over again in your mind, it's made a cripple of you.

Armand Fontaine:
Don't lie to me!

Mr. Fontaine:
I'm going after him now.

Otto Wellers:
He'll kill you!

Mr. Fontaine:
Perhaps.

Buz Murdock:
They make a pretty good map for cars don't they? But what do they make for guys like me who turn left instead of right?

Tod Stiles:
We have to know we're lost before we can find ourselves Buz. That sort of map you make up as you go along.

Dr. Lawrence Martin:
You see with the Love Machine, we can completely eliminate man and give women the self-sufficiency they say they want.

Dark-haired woman:
[Spoken after two catty women left the room] "Ignore those girls, Miss Russell. Lincoln freed most everyone except THEM."

[last lines]

Tod Stiles:
[Tod's voice over while racing on the lake] Whoever fights the future has a mortal enemy, a faceless enemy, because the future has no being of its own. It steals its being from each man and once it's tricked him of his secrets it appears outside him. A predator he must meet. But it can be met and it can be vanquished if only he will reach out for it with open arms and a hungry heart.

Tod Stiles:
You don't have to go to Athens to see ruins.

Vicki Russell:
Rancor's the garlic in the salad of charm.

Nikko:
Don't mind Jo. She's a bankrupt idealist. And the poor, they're bitter people.

Linc Case:
[while bowling] Every time I hear twigs burning in a bonfire, that dry sudden crackling sound, I don't hear twigs, I hear shots from a carbine.

Tod Stiles:
All right, you found him and you smashed him. Now forget it.

Linc Case:
We never got our accounts settled, Cam Wilcox and I. I've been waiting a long time to get this squared away. I promised myself if I ever found him I'd make him admit it. Admit that he chickened out and got my men killed. I want it on the record and not just in my mind. I'll get it out of him... I don't care what it takes.

Cam Wilcox:
[to his wife and his son] You see, when the enemy came, I hid in the mud. I made a choice - I chose to live and not die, and I've been a dead man ever since.

Molly Cross:
[He walks over and picks her up in her arms] Mr. Stevenson, what are doing?

Mr. Charles Stevenson:
I'm taking you to the Justice of the Peace. Molly, you're marrying me today!

Molly Cross:
But you're engaged!

Mr. Charles Stevenson:
I can always get another fianc?e, but I'll never get another secretary like you.

Molly Cross:
An executive as important as you, you'd think they'd give you a better office. Don't you have a secretary?

Buz Murdock:
Don't let the jacket and tie and fool you, Molly. I'm just a leg man.

Molly Cross:
Aren't most men?

Maximillian Coyne:
[pointing at Buz] Look at him, just look at him. Why that pizzazz is just oozing from every pore.

Tod Stiles:
[as Tod and Buz get in the car to leave] Excuse me.

Maximillian Coyne:
Where, where are you going?

Tod Stiles:
[about Buz] I got to rush him to the hospital so they can close his pores because if he loses too much pizzazz, he goes right into shock.

Corelli:
My dad said, wear a hat, walk fast and you'll be rich by the time you're 35.

Tod Stiles:
[Tod notices a poodle outside his window and walks outside to it] Well now, whose little boy are you? [He looks over and sees Diane]

Diane:
And whose little boy are you?

Tod Stiles:
Unlicensed, unregistered, unclaimed, and... waiting to be unleashed.

Diane:
Tonight? Eightish?

Tod Stiles:
Where?

Diane:
The same place you closed Saturday night.

Tod Stiles:
How do you know where I was Saturday night? [She turns and starts to walk away] I'm Tod, whom might you be? [She continues to walk away. The title credit "Suppose I Said I Was the Queen of Spain", appears on screen]

Helen Paige:
Virg, I don't want to fight anymore.

Virgil Paige:
Helen, we got a piece of land, that's more than most people.

Helen Paige:
And did you ever stop to add up the cost? Mother was 31 when she died and Dad was 44.

Virgil Paige:
What is it that you want to do instead?

Helen Paige:
I want to sell out! Don't tell me you never thought about it.

Virgil Paige:
Helen, we had three generations of people give up their lives for this ranch, not so we could sell out.

Helen Paige:
When we found Homer he was just sitting there next to Overjack. Overjack was dead. Homer knew it but he just sat there because he promised not to leave. Promises don't belong to the dead - they're for the living.

Payson:
[Speaking in the bank to Virgil Paige] Now a drought can last 1 year, 5 years, 10 years. How much longer can you hang on without going under?

Tod Stiles:
Don't you think we deserve to know?

Frank Bartlett:
The less you know the better.

Otto Reinitz:
You needed an x-ray to uncover me. I saw through you at once. Your kind give off a smell - a smell of fear, subservience.

Buz Murdock:
[In the Sheriff's office] Is there something we can do?

Lotti Montana:
Sure. Next time a girl tells you there's a better place for dinner down the road, listen to her. Goodbye, Buz. Tod.

Tod Stiles:
[Speaking to Buz while driving the Corvette] We just don't belong anywhere.

[last lines]

Tod Stiles:
I remember something Dad used to say.

Buz Murdock:
What's that?

Tod Stiles:
Whenever you reach an impasse look at the the third side of the coin.

Buz Murdock:
The third side?

Tod Stiles:
Yea.

Buz Murdock:
I thought there was only two sides to a coin.

Tod Stiles:
The third side is the edge, the place the two sides come together. The meeting place of heads and tails. Dad used to say that was the best side, because it welds opposites together. And it's a circle, a continuous circle, closed and perfect, as endless as understanding itself.

Tod:
What do you got for a walking corpse?

Bartender:
Embalming fluid on the rocks.

Linc Case:
You look like a policeman-in New York City.

Shagbag:
Nah- I've never left Minnesota.

Tod Stiles:
Next to the wound, Miss Brahms, the thing a woman makes best is the bandage.

Linc Case:
Everybody seems to be smiling, except you.

Shagbag:
It shows, huh? I never wanted to be a publicity man, I always wanted to be a cop!

Linc Case:
You look like a cop, I keep thinking I've seen you somewhere before. New York maybe?

Shagbag:
Nah - I've never left Minnesota.

Julian Roebuck:
You got any of these with leather patches on the elbows?

General store clerk/owner:
