We've had a lot of success so far. We know what dangers to expect out there from black suns, neutron storms, radiation and the like, but if we think we know everything that goes on out there, we're making a terrible mistake!

Helena Russell:
With a history like that, who wants to go back to Earth anyway?

Maya:
You mean, people killed people, just because they were different from each other? That's disgusting.

John Koenig:
If we understand others, in time, I believe, we come to understand ourselves.

Commander John Koenig:
Now we're sitting on the biggest bomb man's ever made.

John Koenig:
A killer who can't be killed.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
[last message before evacuating Alpha] We are Mankind. We came from planet Earth, and we built this base, called Alpha, to learn more about space. But human error blasted this Moon out of the Earth's orbit. And so, we have traveled the Universe searching for a place to live. Now, we can no longer live here, and we go to face an uncertain future on the planet that has nearly destroyed us. You, whoever you are, who find this empty vessel of Alpha, come and seek us out, if we still exist. Come and teach us all you know. Because, we have learned many things, but most of all, we have learned we still have much to learn.

Sandra Benes:
Why has all of this happened to us, Professor?

Prof. Victor Bergman:
The gods using us for their sport, perhaps?

Tony Verdeschi:
All right, everybody, get ready for the taste of a lifetime! Verdeschi's Brew #29! Made from a generation of Alpha hops especially brewed by our famous hydroponic botanist, Shermeen Williams! Shermeen, will you do the honors, please? [He pours. Shermeen offers Tony's beer to each of the Alphans in turn]

Maya:
No, thanks. I'd hate to ruin a beautiful friendship.

Dr. Helena Russell:
As chief medical officer, I must retain my sanity.

Bill Fraser:
Thanks, no, I happen to be on a liquid-free diet.

[first lines]

Paul Morrow:
[as alarm sounds] That's it!

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Alan, cut the alarm.

Alan Carter:
A day to remember.

Dr. Helena Russell:
[on view screen] It's a boy!

[last lines]

Cmdr. John Koenig:
They're gone.

Dr. Helena Russell:
Do you think they gave themselves up?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
It's a nice thought, Helena. But, I don't think they had any choice.

[first lines]

Alan Carter:
Velocity's increasing.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Main scanner.

Paul Morrow:
Intense gravitational forces, sir.

[last lines]

Alan Carter:
I wonder if the others made it. If they survived.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Did they ever really exist?

[last lines]

Dr. Helena Russell:
Something brought us home.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Yes. Home.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
Sixty year old brandy. I've been saving it for ten years, just waiting for a proper occasion to celebrate. Well, not everybody might think this was a celebration, but it is to me. If ever there was an occasion, this is it.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
To everything that might have been.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
To everything that was.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
[impatiently] Come on, come on...

Computer Voice:
Hypothesis proven. It is your duty to... report this danger... to... the Commander.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
[talking over the computer voice] Yeah, one jump ahead of you, computer.

Jim Nordstrom:
Professor Bergman, it's Jim Nordstrom. We've just passed through the laser barrier, and we should be ready to start Doctor Russell's manual check on the radiation seals in a couple of minutes.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
September thirteen, nineteen ninety nine. Meta signals increasing. Yes, maybe there.

John Koenig:
The giant leap for Mankind... it's beginning to look like a stumble in the dark.

[first lines]

Paul Morrow:
Eagle Two-Nine approaching asteroid, commander. Eagle Ten descending with nuke.

[last lines]

Dr. Helena Russell:
John, I'm sorry.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
You were right. Totally right. If you had done anything else, I'd want to know why.

Dr. Helena Russell:
But...

Cmdr. John Koenig:
But nothing. Helena, if you went out to that spaceship and came back with a crazy story like I did, I'd be a fool not to lock you up. How could anyone possibly know that a planet on a collision course would not collide but simply touch?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
[after seeing a hallucinating Alan] What's all this about?

Dr. Helena Russell:
Hallucination, disorientation - classic symptoms of radiation sickness. He *has* been affected.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
But that's not possible! The instruments cleared him!

Dr. Helena Russell:
Well, they're wrong - and they're probably wrong about you, too.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Helena... look, the man's been unconscious, dreaming, maybe having a nightmare...

Dr. Helena Russell:
That was no nightmare.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Now how the hell can you be so sure?

Dr. Helena Russell:
Because I know my job. Look, except for Alan, both you and Paul have had the greatest exposure.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Look, I'm not hallucinating. Okay, maybe, maybe my reaction was a bit hasty, but so is your assessment!

Dr. Helena Russell:
My "assessment" is based on experience, and with no help from the clock. Extensive tests take time, John. Look, I think he has been affected, and if I'm right, then you've got to be suspect, too.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Now, look, Helena... [his comm buzzes] Yes, Paul?

Paul Morrow:
Reconnaisance Eagle is ready on Pad 4. Co-pilot Pierre Daniel is standing by.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Thanks, Paul, but I'm going alone.

Dr. Helena Russell:
You're not going out again!

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Don't worry, I'll wear my galoshes.

[first lines]

Capt. Jack Tanner:
Say I was right. Admit that I, Jack Tanner, did foretell, did prophesy, long before you heard from that eyeless instrument.

Dr. Cabot Rowland:
Yes, Jack, you were absolutely right.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Is it death that gives meaning to life in the end?

Capt. Jack Tanner:
[voice over] If there is an end.

Dr. Helena Russell:
[voice over] It was the eight hundredth and seventy seventh day since our moon left Earth. We were between galaxies drifting through empty space, when Tony Cellini began to believe that he was closing for a second time with his mortal enemy.

Dr. Helena Russell:
John, if we ever do find a new place to live, and if we succeed, we're going to need a whole new mythology.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Tony Cellini and the Monster?

Dr. Helena Russell:
George and the Dragon sounds pretty flat until you know the story.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
This story is part of our history now, Helen. I think Tony will be very happy to know he put new life into an old myth.

Tony Cellini:
Alan... Sorry about last night.

Alan Carter:
Yeah. [Tony hits Alan again, knocking him unconscious another time]

Dr. Helena Russell:
He's a suppressed hysteric. Where do you think he was trying to get to, out there, in his pajamas? We're nowhere. We're three months EAGLE travel time to the nearest star system and he was going off on his own. Now if that's an act of a rational man... he didn't even take his toothbrush!

Commissioner Simmonds:
Alright, just a minute. Well, once again, I've sat in at a command conference and listened to a cozy round of self congratulations. Aren't we doing well? Hmm? Adapting, adjusting, coming to terms. And, once again, I am shocked that we've not discussed a serious attempt to locate Earth and return there.

[last lines]

Dr. Helena Russell:
John, who did the computer finally choose?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Simmonds.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Simmonds, if that suspended animation process works, the computer will make a choice. An unbiased choice of one passenger from Alpha. You'll be eligible like all the others.

Commissioner Simmonds:
Including yourself, of course.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
No.

Commissioner Simmonds:
What?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
No, and don't try to understand why.

[first lines]

Mike Baxter:
We're just preparing the charges now.

[last lines]

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Alright, let's get this place into shape. Let's go.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
Well, we're lucky we survived.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
It was our fault. We unleashed him.

Dr. Helena Russell:
We meddled. We interfered with another people's justice. We must learn to leave some things alone.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
What do you make of it, Victor?

Prof. Victor Bergman:
Not much. It's a new one on me.

[last lines]

Dr. Helena Russell:
We don't know what that alien force was, why it came here, or why it selected Anton. But, we've got to try to help each other to understand.

[first lines]

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Kano, that computer's got to be swamped with data. Now, why isn't it offering any prediction as to whether that planet can support life?

[last lines]

Cmdr. John Koenig:
We've brought a dead planet back to life. Maybe we should have stayed.

Alan Carter:
It's a Mary Celeste. There's no one here.

Tony Verdeschi:
[Tony is serving his latest batch of simulated coffee] Well?

Alan Carter:
On an ascending scale of ten, I think you've reached maybe... two?

Tony Verdeschi:
You know your problem? You've got no taste, kid.

Alan Carter:
Before I tasted this, I had!

Alan Carter:
Commander, we're getting a reading. Eagle One in orbit and holding.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
More to the point, Kano. Have you computed how much older you'll be when we reach the last of those planets?

David Kano:
Two thousand, five hundred and forty-three years old to be exact, sir. Just thought you might like to know.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Thank you, Kano.

Lee Russell:
Nobody dies. Matter never dies, Helena. It changes its form.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Eagle One to base, we copy. Paul, we're returning to Alpha.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
One hundred square miles of space ship.

If the same thing happened on Alpha, would you have chosen differently?

Cmdr. John Koenig:

Commander John Koenig:
We make our own choices!

Sandra Benes:
[as Ted Clifford walks to the computer] Paul? What is he doing? He doesn't know anything about a computer.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Why so pensive, Victor?

Prof. Victor Bergman:
Oh, I was just thinking about that planet, Triton. All that knowledge, and yet... [beat] Perhaps knowledge isn't the answer after all.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Then what is?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Paul. Sandra. I'm turning in.

Paul Morrow:
Lucky you.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Four hours, fifty-two minutes and twenty second.

Sandra Benes:
Congratulations. I thought no one would break the five hour barrier.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Well, it's time we had a new puzzle.

Paul Morrow:
Time we had a new world.

Dr. Helena Russell:
If only we could have communicated.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
I haven't had so much fun since I burned grandma's wig!

Commander John Koenig:

Sally Martin:
[taking inventory and speaking into a recorder] Three point two five grams. And Doctor Helena Russell is a hard-hearted witch!

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Two planets.

David Kano:
We'll be in range to survey the left-hand planet in 24 hours.

Sandra Benes:
Still too distant for visual analysis, but the spectrographic analysis looks promising.

Dr. Helena Russell:
Two planets. Be nice to have a choice, wouldn't it?

Cmdr. John Koenig:
They've got their war, and we have all of space to find a home... somewhere.

Prof. Victor Bergman:
A sun like ours. Planet Ariel with its atmosphere. It's a perfectly balanced little solar system.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Can you hear me?

Alien Probe:
And understand your thoughts.

Cmdr. John Koenig:
Then you must have known we came in peace.

Alien Probe:
We believe your intentions, but we have been watching the progress of your world since the beginning of time. Human nature is such that we could not afford to take the risk.

Dr. Helena Russell:
[trying to wake an oxygen-deprived Koenig] John... John, do you hear me? John, do you know who I am?

Commander John Koenig:
I never saw you before in my life... [he grins]... Doctor Russell.

I remember. A world without fear. It was very strange... but beautiful. We've lost it.
