Statsministerens nytårstale

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
It is about security. Because security gives freedom. Safety and security is the basis for daring something, changing jobs, improving one's skills. It is, in the end, security which gives Denmark our international competitiveness and real freedom.

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
There are lots of foreigners who make a great effort in the Danish society. But there are also groups who make it clear that they don't want to take part at all. That they don't care about our values and basis.

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
Before long, we must decide if we want to be part of the European common currency, the Euro. It is our choice. I am not in doubt. We should elect to join. We should say yes to participation.

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
We know that if the krone comes under pressure, the whole society comes under pressure. And we also know who it hurts when the Danish society is in a crisis. It is not those at the top of society who are hurt. It is people at the bottom. Those who got their jobs last will be hurt. That is why we should be part of the EU cooperation on the common currency. It will create the best and most secure basis for further development of the future of the Danish society.

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
I see it as my job to keep the population united, not to create division.

Rasmussen, Poul Nyrup:
And think about it: More and more countries around us - the entire Europe, in fact - are now trying to build and develop societies on the values on which we are founded. They have tried the other things - total liberalism. Or centralist communism.
