The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Italian: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, lit.?"The good, the ugly, the bad") is a 1966 Italian epic Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in their respective title roles. Its screenplay was written by Age & Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni and Leone (with additional screenplay material and dialogue provided by an uncredited Sergio Donati), based on a story by Vincenzoni and Leone. Director of photography Tonino Delli Colli was responsible for the film's sweeping widescreen cinematography, and Ennio Morricone composed the film's score including its main theme. It is an Italian-led production with co-producers in Spain, West Germany and the United States. The film is known for Leone's use of long shots and close-up cinematography, as well as his distinctive use of violence, tension, and stylistic gunfights. The plot revolves around three gunslingers competing to find fortune in a buried cache of Confederate gold amid the violent chaos of the American Civil War (specifically the New Mexico Campaign in 1862), while participating in many battles and duels along the way. The film was the third collaboration between Leone and Clint Eastwood, and the second with Lee Van Cleef. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was marketed as the third and final installment in the Dollars Trilogy, following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. The film was a financial success, grossing over $25 million at the box office, and is credited with catapulting Eastwood into stardom. Due to general disapproval of the Spaghetti Western genre at the time, critical reception of the film following its release was mixed, but it gained critical acclaim in later years. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is now seen as one of the greatest and most influential Western movies.

For three men, the Civil War wasn't Hell. It was practice!
They forged an alliance of hate to steal a fortune in dead man's gold.

[Blondie gives Tuco a horse ride out to the desert]

Tuco:
What're you trying to say? Anybody can miss a shot? Nobody misses when I'm at the end of the rope. You never had a rope around your neck. Well, I'm going to tell you something. When that rope starts to pull tight, you can feel the devil bite your ass!

Blondie:
Yeah, you're right. It's getting tougher. [throws Tuco off the horse] The way I figure, there's really not to much future with a sawed-off runt like you.

Tuco:
What do you mean?

Blondie:
'Cause I don't think you'll ever be worth more than $3,000.

Tuco:
What do you mean?

Blondie:
I mean, our partnership is untied. [Tuco looks at the rope] Oh no, not you. You remain tied. I'll keep the money, and you can have the rope.

Tuco:
[angrily] You filthy, double-crossing bastard! Of all the stinking, dirty tricks...

Blondie:
The way back to town is only 70 miles. If you save your breath, I feel a man like you could manage it. Adios. [begins riding away]

Tuco:
You, you, you filthy BASTARD! [chases Blondie] Come here! Come here! Cut this rope off! Get off that horse! GET OFF THAT HORSE! You filthy coward! If I ever catch you, Blondie, I'll rip your heart out and eat it! I'll sk-- I'll skin you alive! I'll hang you by your tongue! YOU PIG! YOU VULTURE! [angrily begins kicking sand up] WHY, I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL KILL YOU!

Blondie:
[stops the horse and looks back at Tuco] Such ingratitude, after all the times I've saved your life. ["THE GOOD"] [begins riding away again]

Tuco:
Wait a minute. Wait. This is only a trick! You won't leave me here! Come back! WAIT, BLONDIE! Listen, Blondie! [enraged] HIJO DE UNA GRAN PUTAAAAAAAA!!!!
