Jerry Landau:
[after hearing about the huge mess Harry's in] Why the hell didn't you go fishing?

[first lines]

Harry Nash:
Rook to Knight 1.

Jonathan Gault:
You sure you don't want to look at the board?

Harry Nash:
No. Just move it.

Jonathan Gault:
Damn. I don't know how you stand all the waiting, Harry. It gives me the willies.

[the phone rings]

Harry Nash:
Yes? Okay, we'll be right there.

Jonathan Gault:
Moment of truth?

Harry Nash:
We'll see.

Harry Nash:
Do you ever feel like quitting?

Jerry Landau:
With three ex-wives and a Lamborghini to support? Be serious.

Harry Nash:
I am serious. I can't remember the last time I represented a decent human being.

Jerry Landau:
I'll get you a drink.

Harry Nash:
I don't have to drink his liquor.

Jenny Stafford:
You didn't have to defend him, either.

Harry Nash:
Number One: I wasn't talking to you. Jesus, I hate a woman who smokes.

Jenny Stafford:
Yeah, well, we're a lot worse than murderers.

Harry Nash:
Number Two: I believe the verdict was not guilty.

Jenny Stafford:
So why are you bad mouthing it?

Harry Nash:
Look, if I was a surgeon, I wouldn't have to love the guy on the table, would I?

Jenny Stafford:
I hadn't thought of that. Surgeons have bloody hands, too.

Harry Nash:
Hey, Miss, it's safe to go back inside. I'm leaving.

Jenny Stafford:
You should stay. All these people drinking, there's bound to be a nice accident.

Harry Nash:
I'm waiting for the next clich?.

Jenny Stafford:
Is that all you're waiting for?

Harry Nash:
Boy, have you got a mean mouth.

Jenny Stafford:
Sue me.

District Attorney:
Look, if we were desperate, I'd say, 'Fine. We got nothing to lose.' But the man is a pimp. He's fifty pounds of garbage in a ten pound bag. All Nash has to do is kick it and we'd never get rid of the stench.

Harry Nash:
He's on some kind of edge... if we could just prod him, push him, rattle his cage a little bit, I think he might make a mistake.

Burt Matson:
Yeah, he might even go after his lawyer who now knows too much.

Jonathan Gault:
You put a bent cop in my life, is that it? Nice... move... Harry! That cop would shoot me for running a red light. I bet your hands are clean, aren't they? Hypocrite, liar, adulter... well, they do say, "Never trust a lawyer."

Jonathan Gault:
I know - murder... suicide. Slimy lawyer kills mistress, then self; wronged husband mourns in jail. Come up here. Come on, Harry! I'll let you say goodbye.

[Harry doesn't move]

Jonathan Gault:
Very well. I'm quite a good shot, you know. I can hit her from here. Watch.

[Jonathan fires at Jenny, who is gagged and bound in the next room]

Harry Nash:
Noooo!

Jonathan Gault:
... Missed.

Jonathan Gault:
I just have to hire a wily young lawyer like yourself, Harry. I'll buy myself a pack of psychiatrists; tell them I trusted you. That'll prove my insanity beyond a reasonable doubt. You're going to have to shoot me or be part of my defense.

Harry Nash:
Shut up.

Jonathan Gault:
Actually, I wish you would kill me. I don't really much fancy alive - hospital, painting classes, taking up to Bible to show I'm reborn.

Jonathan Gault:
Look at you. You really want to. The real Harry at last. Not a lawyer - a judge, a god - deciding life and death. Harry the Omnipotent.

Harry Nash:
Shut up.

Jonathan Gault:
One last prayer, Harry, if you're going to kill me, one last prayer. Harry is my shepherd, I shall not want. Yea, even though I walk in the shadow...

[last lines]

Harry Nash:
It's over. What do you say we go for a walk?
