Ella:
Why'd you leave so sudden?

Bob:
I was gonna write to ya.

Ella:
No you weren't.

Bob:
I was, Ella! Honest! I wouldn't forget ya.

Ella:
You left all your books be'ind.

Bob:
I don't want 'em.

Ella:
But you love 'em!

Bob:
I don't need 'em anymore. *You* 'ave 'em. As a present.

Ella:
Thank you. [pause] It's strange. You not bein' there in the next room. [smiles] I used to hear you movin' about.

Bob:
[laughingly] I used to hear you sometimes.

Ella:
[abruptly, on the verge of tears] Oh Bob. You shouldn'ta gone and done it. [pause]

Bob:
Things have to change sometimes, don't they?

Ella:
*Will* you write?

Bob:
Yeah, I'll write. If you'll answer.

Ella:
Oh I'll answer. [pause] Will you post this for me, please?

Bob:
Mr. Eccles, eh? Still mad about you, is he?

Ella:
Dunno.

Bob:
You've no time for him, 'ave ya?

Ella:
He's too old. And I'm young aren't I?

Bob:
'Course you are. [pause]

Ella:
Don't you worry, Bob. And you will write, won't you?

Bob:
Yes.

Ella:
And don't forget to post that letter.

Bob:
No, I won't. [pause]

Ella:
[glances back at the bus] Here's my bus. [pause] Well. [breath catches in her throat]

Bob:
Bye Ella.

Ella:
Goodbye Bob. [pause] You've got to kiss me now.

Ella:
[emotionally] 'Cause it's goodbye for good.
