Warning Shot

Sgt. Ed Musso:
You're under arrest, Tom. The big one. Murder. The killing of Liz Thayer.

Sgt. Tom Valens:
[slumping onto a chair in shock] Oh, no. When? How?

Sgt. Ed Musso:
The custodian found her in Rustin's office. The place had been torn apart. She'd been choked and badly beaten. She was seen entering the office at 4:30, you were seen leaving around 5:00.

Sgt. Tom Valens:
I went to see her, but the door was locked, I couldn't get in.

Sgt. Ed Musso:
The custodian said he saw you with your hand on the knob like you'd closed the door. Tom, we found your fingerprints all over the treatment room!

Sgt. Tom Valens:
You said the place had been torn apart.

Sgt. Ed Musso:
I was being polite, it looked like a tornado hit it! All the files dumped on the floor, furniture smashed, even the Mexican nicknacks on the wall had been smashed, like some maniac was trying to destroy everything he could get his hands on.

Sgt. Tom Valens:
Somebody's looking for something, and theyn can't find it. Somebody important. Somebody who's involved in this besides Rustin.

Sgt. Ed Musso:
Sure, you! The boys downtown figure you've been pushing that Rustin gun story for so long you've flipped, and tore the place apart yourself!

Sgt. Tom Valens:
The gun! That must be the answer to everything!

[Valens suddenly attacks Ed Musso and grabs his gun, pointing it at Musso]

Sgt. Ed Musso:
Tom, don't!

Sgt. Tom Valens:
Stow it!

Sgt. Ed Musso:
Don't make it worse than it is!

Sgt. Tom Valens:
I can't help it, now you turn around! Turn around!

[Valens grabs Musso's handcuffs, cuffs Musso's hands together behind his back, grabs his keys, then leads him to his closet]

Sgt. Tom Valens:
Just a few more hours, Ed.

Sgt. Ed Musso:
Go to hell!

[Valens locks Musso in the closet, then telephones Walt Cody]

Walt Cody:
Hello?

Sgt. Tom Valens:
Walt, this is Tom Valens. Did I wake you?

Walt Cody:
No, but our date's for eight. If you're thinking of flying to Baja tonight, get yourself another boy.

Sgt. Tom Valens:
The Baja trip's off. What I've been looking for has been here all the time.

Walt Cody:
Well that's great! You need help finding it?

Sgt. Tom Valens:
I thought you'd never ask. Bring your muscles, we're gonna open a grave.

Mrs. Doris Ruston:
We're two of a kind, Mr. Valens, remember, two losers. And according to an old Chinese proverb, when you rub two losers together, sometimes you get surprises... sometimes even fire.

Sgt. Tom Valens:
I'm a sore loser, Mrs. Ruston... a sore loser.

Mrs. Doris Ruston:
I'm not your picture of a bereaved widow, am I? You would have preferred someone draped in black and weeping softly to organ music. Frankly, I've got nothing to cry about. Strange, my admitting that to you, the man who killed him. Jim was a blob, a jellyfish... umm, aren't I terrible? Am I any worse than you, ogling his widow? You see, Mr. Valens, you're no more noble than I am - We're two of a kind.
