  Apparently, I am not the only person that these lines resonate with quite deeply. I note that other posters have alluded to something terrible that happened to them and remain with them to this day. Likewise, I have a terrible memory that lives with me nearly 50 years ago. I can neither forgive myself or forget what happened. more »

  Something happened in my life that makes this quote incredibly meaningful to me. As a vicitm of family cruelty and dishonor, I've struggled to be ONLY a vicitm. Pressure from pain pushes me to add to my vicitmization bitterness, a desire to retreat from those who hurt me, and a temptation to deny and suppress the fact that they, because they are still family, mean something to me. I wish them well. I pray for their well-being. But I can't seem to TRUST them anymore, nor can I feel happy at the thought of seeing them again. This kind of hurt seems unhealable by time. It is only healable if they recognize what they've done to me and acknowledge it; if they show they regret devaluing me as a person. But they have no inclination to do that. The hurt has taken hold, and I live with it. But I strive to escape rancour, for that would be poison to my soul. God keeps me strong and filled with the sense that I am loved. And that is my sanity. It is sanity enough. Thank you God. But family? That doesn't compute with me. I don't know if it ever will again. more »
