To help protect the community from violence, rigid controls are exerted over the possession and use of firearms. A further indirect control requires that all doctors report immediately to law enforcement officials the treatment of any gunshot wound. In this case, however, two holdup men, one with a bullet in his shoulder which demanded medical treatment, took desperate measures to avoid contact with the police. From a local telephone directory they chose a doctor who had offices in his home, located in an outlying suburban area.
