Murdoch can't be shot; it has to be Constable Tom.

James Pendrick:
Alphonse, I'm director, and what I say goes!

Alphonse:
But, if you do it like that, it doesn't make any sense. In the third act, Tom is the one who has to get shot.

James Pendrick:
The audience won't care about Tom; Murdoch is the star.

Alphonse:
But the ending won't make any sense at all.

James Pendrick:
It doesn't matter. There'll be a terrific chase scene.

Alphonse:
