England was burning, Maggie Thatcher firing on all barrels at Ireland, the Falklands. She sacked Social Security, went after the immigrants, the poor, the unions. What do you remember about Brixton, about my people, then?

Sarah Manning:
Not much. There were always women around. Kids would come and go, wards of the state.

Mrs. S:
They weren't all wards. We were... a safehouse. Some of us worked in Social Services, helping women and kids, refugees, deportees, radicals on the run, that kind of thing. [Points to a photo] And this boy, Carlton.

Sarah Manning:
Yeah, Carlton. I remember him.

Mrs. S:
He was a fine boy. Fine man. Sometimes his pipeline would bring in a child in the black, a child to hide. You were one of them.

Sarah Manning:
Why'd he have to hide me?

Mrs. S:
