The job of Marshal in a Western cow town of the 1870s had a brief life experience. Wyatt Earp had lived through the taming of Ellsworth and Wichita by the speed of his guns and the skill of his fists. But Dodge City was bigger and tougher. Hoodlums, drunken cowhands and a few businessmen who wanted a wide open town had determined to get rid of Marshal Earp by killing him. Thus far, alertness and luck had been with the Marshal.
