Nick Wild: During the Blackjack table scene just as Nicky's big win streak is about to start about 41 minutes he is dealt King of Diamonds and nine of Diamonds; totaling 19. The dealer's upcard card is King of Spades 10 value. Basic Blackjack strategy dictates, as Nicky points out, the dealer is likely to have a 10 value hidden card potentially rendering his 19 a loser. However, any player value of 17 or above dictates that the player stands doesn't not take another card, so Nicky is going against all experienced play and "Basic Strategy" laws of the game. This move is stupid and something that any player with a modicum of playing experience would never do, given Nicky's Blackjack history he should know better. The dealer does show surprise when he asked to "hit" 19. Only if Nicky were card counting would this be a possible reason for taking another card on 19, however as he had only just arrived at the table there is no way he could have been card counting, he wouldn't have seen enough cards. During the same deal Nicky suggests that if he receives a 2 value card he will have a total of 21, this is correct. However he goes onto suggest that if he gets the 2 value card it "means he wins", which is wrong. Whilst a player with a 21 value is guaranteed not to lose, he or she is by no means certain of winning with that value. The dealer does not have Blackjack / 21. We know this because she has checked her hidden card with the small mirror inset into the table -this mirror device allows the dealer to see the hidden card. If this hidden card were to be an Ace the dealer would flip the cards over and proclaim Blackjack!. The dealer however could still make 21 and push or tie with Nicky's 21 value. One of many ways for this to occur would be for the dealer's hidden card to be, say a 4 value dealer total now 14 by the rules of the game she would then need to draw again, say this next card is a 7 value card... This gives the dealer 21. The game is tie Nicky does not win.
